Olfa

Olfa is a trilingual family originally designed by Daniel Grumer in 2011 for a studential cooperative in downtown Jerusalem, that responded to the 2011 social protest in Israel, and supplied food and basic consumer goods to its 442 members. The family is named after a yellow Japanese utility knife made by the company OLFA, given to Daniel as a gift in 1992 by the late Aharon Friedman, a model maker at the Gabay–Rubin architecture firm where Daniel’s father worked. All of the font’s letters were cut by hand using that well-worn knife, which remains in excellent condition to this day. The Olfa family is characterized by unique shapes and free, surprising angles — yet thanks to its wide range of weights and its support for Latin and Arabic, it suits a broad variety of uses, and can serve trilingual headlines as well as short texts in a distinctive and refreshing way.
