אהרוני וריאבל
Aharoni Variable
Aharoni was designed by Tuvia Aharoni (1909–1981) for the German type foundry Ludwig & Mayer, which operated in Frankfurt between 1875 and 1984. It was originally released together with the Latin typeface Erbar Grotesk, a popular geometric sans also produced by the foundry, from which it inherited its numeral set and punctuation marks. It is unclear whether Aharoni was designed from the outset as a Hebrew counterpart to Erbar, or whether the pairing was made later, but anyhow for many years the two were distributed together. Aharoni quickly became extremely popular among Hebrew readers — thanks to its wide availability and its simple, clean forms. Over the years, various print shops across the country developed condensed versions of Aharoni, which allowed maximum content to fit into generously sized headlines. The Aharoni Variable version preserves the full historical range of Aharoni’s widths and weights — from condensed to regular, thin to bold — and adds a black weight, which did not exist originally, along with a complete Latin set, inspired by Erbar, the historical counterpart.

האות היפה בפשטותה ורבת האפשרויות. הספיקה במשך הזמן הקצר להופעתה לרכוש לה את עולם הדפוס. האות אהרוני היא פרי עמל של שנים ונסיונות אין מספר. כיוצר כן המו״ל שאפו לתת לדפוס העברי אות עברית חדישה בסגנונה, אבל בנויה על מקורות הכתב העברי. דאגנו לתת לילד העברי אות יפה ופשוטה בצורתה. אות דגושה ומנוקדת, שזה מזמן הוא זקוק לה בכדי לאפשר לו קריאה קלה ובלתי מעייפת. כמו כן דאגנו לסידור העברי האקצדנצי שלא יצטרך לפגר מחמת חוסר אות מתאימה. כי האות אהרוני בשתי צורתיה — שמן וחצי־שמן — ובכל המידות הטיפוגרפיות, פותחות לסַדָּר העברי אפשרויות בלתי מוגבלות בעבודות אקצידנץ לכל גווניהן.

A Typeface that is beautiful in its simplicity and rich in possibilities. In the short time since its appearance, it has managed to win over the world of print. The Aharoni typeface is the fruit of years of effort and countless experiments. As its creators, as well as the publisher, we aspired to give Hebrew printing a new Hebrew letter in style, yet one built upon the sources of Hebrew script. We took care to provide the Hebrew child with a beautiful and simple letterform. A pointed and vocalized letter, which has been long needed in order to enable easy and effortless reading. We also took care of the Hebrew Akzidenz typesetting, so that it would not lag behind due to the lack of a suitable typeface.

For the Aharoni typeface, in its two forms—bold and semi-bold—and in all typographic sizes, opens up unlimited possibilities for the Hebrew compositor in Akzidenz work of all kinds. It fully resolves the problem of adapting letters to one another, as well as the bilingual challenge. It is suited to the modern Latin letter both in its form and in its weight—unlike any other Hebrew typeface created until now. Practical work with the Aharoni typeface has demonstrated its many possibilities across all branches of printing and the broad field of activity it opens to the Hebrew printer, along with its numerous and unique advantages.

Aharoni was designed by Tuvia Aharoni (1909–1981) for the German type foundry Ludwig & Mayer, which operated in Frankfurt between 1875 and 1984. It was originally released together with the Latin typeface Erbar Grotesk, a popular geometric sans also produced by the foundry, from which it inherited its numeral set and punctuation marks. It is unclear whether Aharoni was designed from the outset as a Hebrew counterpart to Erbar, or whether the pairing was made later, but anyhow for many years the two were distributed together. Aharoni quickly became extremely popular among Hebrew readers — thanks to its wide availability and its simple, clean forms. Over the years, various print shops across the country developed condensed versions of Aharoni, which allowed maximum content to fit into generously sized headlines. The Aharoni Variable version preserves the full historical range of Aharoni’s widths and weights — from condensed to regular, thin to bold — and adds a black weight, which did not exist originally, along with a complete Latin set, inspired by Erbar, the historical counterpart.
