Narkissim
Narkissim is a regular-contrast serif typeface for long reading that first appeared in 1982. It is often confused with its predecessor, Narkiss Text, which was published about 14 years earlier. The two indeed share many similar characteristics, but Narkissim is slightly narrower, and its strokes are soft and delicate. Narkissim was designed for phototypesetting technology, which allowed a wide range of users to benefit from its high availability. In the early 1980s, printed journalism in Israel gradually transitioned from machine typesetting to phototypesetting. Unprofessional use of the technology temporarily caused a decline in legibility and overall design quality. This was due to the use of new design options offered by the system, such as letter tightening, narrowing, widening, and artificial slanting in both directions at too sharp an angle, among others. Thanks to its widespread use in phototypesetting technology, and later as part of Microsoft’s Office suite, Narkissim gained a prominent and consistent presence in the local visual landscape. It can still be found today in both home and professional documents, on street signs, and in a notable number of books—certainly more so compared to its predecessor, Narkis Text. In the new version, weight, spacing, and proportions are optimized for text sizes (8–12 pt), and the family includes only two weights—regular and bold.

Belles-lettres is a category of writing, originally meaning beautiful or fine writing. In the modern narrow sense, it is a label for literary works that do not fall into the major categories such as fiction, poetry, or drama. The phrase is sometimes used pejoratively for writing that focuses on the aesthetic qualities of language rather than its practical application. A writer of belles-lettres is a belletrist. Literally, belles-lettres is a French phrase meaning ‘beautiful’ or ‘fine’ writing. In this sense, therefore, it includes all literary works—especially fiction, poetry, drama, or essays—valued for their aesthetic qualities and originality of style and tone. The term thus can be used to refer to literature generally. The Nuttall Encyclopedia, for example, described belles-lettres as the “department of literature which implies literary culture and belongs to the domain of art, whatever the subject may be or the special form; it includes poetry, the drama, fiction, and criticism”, while the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition describes it as “the more artistic and imaginative forms of literature, as poetry or romance, as opposed to more pedestrian and exact studies”.
