Miriam Variable
Miriam was created in 1908 by Raphael Frank, the designer of the canonical Frank Rühl, and is named after his daughter. Miriam was designed to work alongside Frank Rühl as a neutral, sans-serif alternative, providing the option for subtle distinctions within text. It’s almost hard to believe the level of formal refinement and elegance Frank achieved with Miriam as early as 1908, which may in fact have been the first Hebrew sans-serif typeface. Miriam was undoubtedly ahead of its time and paved the way for countless typefaces that followed. Over the years, it served as the basis for many typefaces used in typewriters — thanks to its technical and mechanical quality, it was especially suitable as the foundation for monospaced fonts. Alongside its technical precision, Miriam also demonstrates a notable sensitivity, featuring delicate characteristics that evoke handwriting. The precise balance between mechanics and emotion makes Miriam a typeface that still feels fresh, more than a century after its creation, and never ceases to surprise. The Miriam Variable version gives the classic and beloved Miriam a contemporary toolbox. It allows control over two axes: weight and monospace, and includes a full set of Latin characters, alongside a variety of stylistic alternates that refer to versions of Miriam that were commonly used in engraving techniques (for example, on metal elevator signs or name tags).

Initially a niche product, fax machines became ubiquitous in offices in the 1980s and 1990s. However, they have largely been rendered obsolete by Internet-based technologies such as email and the World Wide Web, but are still used in some medical administration and law enforcement settings. Scottish inventor Alexander Bain worked on chemical-mechanical fax-type devices and in 1846 Bain was able to reproduce graphic signs in laboratory experiments. He received British patent 9745 on May 27, 1843, for his “Electric Printing Telegraph”. Frederick Bakewell made several improvements on Bain’s design.

International Morse code encodes the 26 basic Latin letters A to Z, one accented Latin letter (É), the Indo-Arabic numerals 0 to 9, and a small set of punctuation and messaging procedural signals (prosigns). There is no distinction between upper and lower case letters. Each Morse code symbol is formed by a sequence of dits and dahs. The dit duration can vary for signal clarity and operator skill, but for any one message, once the rhythm is established, a half-beat is the basic unit of time measurement in Morse code. The duration of a dah is three times the duration of a dit (although some telegraphers deliberately exaggerate the length of a dah for clearer signalling).

Miriam was created in 1908 by Raphael Frank, the designer of the canonical Frank Rühl, and is named after his daughter. Miriam was designed to work alongside Frank Rühl as a neutral, sans-serif alternative, providing the option for subtle distinctions within text. It’s almost hard to believe the level of formal refinement and elegance Frank achieved with Miriam as early as 1908, which may in fact have been the first Hebrew sans-serif typeface. Miriam was undoubtedly ahead of its time and paved the way for countless typefaces that followed. Over the years, it served as the basis for many typefaces used in typewriters — thanks to its technical and mechanical quality, it was especially suitable as the foundation for monospaced fonts. Alongside its technical precision, Miriam also demonstrates a notable sensitivity, featuring delicate characteristics that evoke handwriting. The precise balance between mechanics and emotion makes Miriam a typeface that still feels fresh, more than a century after its creation, and never ceases to surprise. The Miriam Variable version gives the classic and beloved Miriam a contemporary toolbox. It allows control over two axes: weight and monospace, and includes a full set of Latin characters, alongside a variety of stylistic alternates that refer to versions of Miriam that were commonly used in engraving techniques (for example, on metal elevator signs or name tags).
