Haim Variable
Haim is probably the most definitive Hebrew sans-serif typeface. True to the structure of Hebrew letters, which are inherently square-based, Haim’s letters are constructed from stable, sharp, and rigid squares and straight lines. Haim first appeared in the 1920s, yet the identity of its designer remains unclear to this day. Designers Jan (Haim) Levit and Pesach Ir-Shai — each in turn — both claimed responsibility for creating the typeface. For the sake of fairness, it should be noted that this model was common among graphic designers at the time, so it is quite possible that both of them independently developed an original typeface, each based on the same existing model, that grew from the spirit of Bauhaus values. In any case, due to its strong and determined qualities, its formal neutrality, and its widespread use in local print houses, Haim became a canonical typeface that can be found everywhere in the local landscape to this day — from obituary notices to headlines in the Israel’s prominent newspapers. “Haim Variable” includes two axes: width (for the first time, ranging from “Compressed” to “Wide”!) and roundness — that lets you add a subtle softness to the text, evoking nostalgic wood-type.
