Sonification – No Theme Thursday – Cosmic Music

No Theme Thursday

For Kevin’s challenge:

No Theme Thursday: 2/13/25

Kevin at his blog, “The Beginning at Last” (above link) give us several AI generated pictures to choose to write about.

This is the one I chose this time.

Kevin’s AI beautiful photo of the dark sky with bright & colorful stars & planets, and lots of musical notes swirling around.

***

From Wiki AI information article:

Sonification is the process of converting data into sound. It can help people analyze complex data sets, improve learning, and make space sciences accessible to people who are blind or partially sighted.

***

The music from the stars and planets is amazing to hear. They have sounds like no other arrangements, such as deep roars, tinkling glass sounds, squeaks, whistles, and rumbles. In the videos below you can see how NASA has put the sounds they record with the pictures the telescopes take of the universe to make a stunning way of seeing our universe, with galaxies, and black holes, auroras, and more.

I’ve always been interested in astronomy and looking at the night sky. My dad built his own telescope, so when I was a kid we’d look at the planets and the moon. We’d see the rings of Saturn, and the craters of the moon, and chart the constellations. There were times I’d sneak out of the house in the middle of the night to search the skies for UFOs, too. I’ve seen the ISS going by, and also what we thought was Haleys comet one time, but later found it was not. There were two I read about … 1956 – comet Arend-Roland, and 1957 – comet Mrkos. One of those were probably what we were seeing when I was a kid.. Later we saw the Hale Bop comet for many nights, too. Shooting stars were always fun to make a wish upon.

I’ve never gotten tired of looking up at the stars.

A photo I took at the MacDonald Observatory,  at Ft. Davis, Texas, one of the largest telescopes in the world. There are ‘star parties’ and gift shops. The photo shows the large white dome of the observatory, where we could enter the building, and up on a cliff is the actual dome of the telescopes.

A magnet I have from the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico. It shows three of the large radio sensors on a dark purple background and says National Radio Astronomy Observatory New Mexico. They search the skies for radio waves from the stars, planets and galaxies.

Flower of the Day – Look Into My Eye

***

This is a pretty pink petaled daisy, I think. What strikes me about it is the three center circles.

I think it looks like an eye, and the closer you get the more you seem to fall into the black part, like looking through a window into space. There are little white specks way inside the black center which look like little stars. (to see even closer just click photo…it’s really cool!)

Today for SLS we were asked to find songs that the title begins with the letter of our last name. Mine is letter S, and right off the bat, without looking anything up, I listed 16 of them! Probably that was just a drop in the bucket, as they say. Anyway, I picked my favorite, which I’ve loved since I first heard it many years ago. When I started this blog I almost put a lyric from this song up at the top under the name. Out of all the ones I thought of …

“Serenade”, by the Steve Miller Band just speaks to my feelings about the stars and space.

As long as I can remember I’ve watched the sky, looking at the wonder that is outer space, at the mysteries it holds, and maybe a ufo?

“Serenade”, by the Steve Miller Band, is on their 1975 album, “Fly Like An Eagle”. It was written by Steve Miller and Chris McCarty, and is on the Capitol (US), and Mercury (UK) labels.

Did you see the lightsAs they fell all around you?Did you hear the music?A serenade from the stars
Wake up, wake upWake up and look around youWe’re lost in space and the time is our own
Whoa-ohWhoa-ohAh-ah
Did you feel the windAs it blew all around you?Did you feel the loveThat was in the air?
Wake up, wake upWake up and look around youWe’re lost in space and the time is our own
Whoa-ohWhoa-ohAh-ah
The sun comes upAnd it shines all around youYou’re lost in space and the earth is your own
Whoa-ohWhoa-ohWhoa-ohWhoa-oh

Thanks, Hugh, for this interesting prompt!

We were asked the question, is a song without lyrics, a song…or not? If I hear it played on the radio, I think it is a song, even if it is just music. There have been many instrumental ‘songs’ recorded. Seems they were more popular way back when, than these days, but I still like hearing them.

This first song is one I really like. I’ve found myself humming it to myself quite a lot over the years, as it has stuck with me because of what all it represents. The music just does something to me, like an optimistic, uplifting sound. Well, you know how I’m fascinated by all things to do with space travel, time travel, stars, and planets. 🙂 The song was named after the first Communications Satellite, which was launched on July 10, 1962. The satellite was the first one to provide communications through television, telephones, and faxes, to be available to everyone. Just think of how we communicate around the world right now. If it wasn’t for these many satellites that orbit the Earth today, our communications ability would not be so advanced.

Here is the Wikipedia information about the Telstar Satellite. It is so interesting to read.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telstar

“Telstar”, by the Tornados, was released as a single from the album, “Telstar – The Sounds of the Tornadoes”, in 1962. It is on the Decca (UK) and London (USA) labels, and was written by Joe Meek.

This next one is quite a bit different, in that it features of all things, an old fashioned manual typewriter! It’s funny to watch. This is the musician/performer Liberace with his version.

“The Typewriter Song”, was written by Leroy Anderson, and first performed by the Boston Pops Orchestra in 1950.

One Word Sunday – Space

For Debbie’s One Word Sunday:

Space

***

A pretty little yellow Kalanchoe. Several bunches of small flowers in a red container.

Fun Fact: Kalanchoe was one of the first plants to be sent into space, sent on a resupply to the Soviet Salyut 1 space station in 1971.

Another common item is a space heater.

The Final Frontier

I like this song a lot, and I hear it on the oldies radio all the time. I really had no idea what they were singing about – space travel to Venus after Earth has become unlivable, until I read the lyrics this morning.

***

From a Wiki article:

This song’s lyric is both apocalyptic and optimistic, describing a trip into Space (heading for Venus) and leaving Earth behind.

“The Final Countdown” became an instant success on the charts worldwide upon its release, reaching number one in 25 countries (including the UK, where it spent two weeks at the top and is Europe’s only Top 10 hit to date),[16] and is widely regarded as the band’s most popular and recognizable song. The single reached number 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and is the most successful song from the album on the Album Rock Tracks chart, peaking at number 18 (and charting for 20 weeks).[17]

The song is also the band’s highest charting single in Australia and Canada, peaking at number 2 and number 5 respectively.

***

“The Final Countdown”, by Europe, is a single from their album of the same name. It was released in 1986, and was written by Joey Tempest. It’s on the Epic label.

We’re leavin’ together
But still it’s farewell
And maybe we’ll come back
To Earth, who can tell?
I guess there is no one to blame
We’re leaving ground (leaving ground)
Will things ever be the same again?
It’s the final countdown
The final countdown
Oh
We’re headin’ for Venus (Venus)
And still we stand tall
‘Cause maybe they’ve seen us
And welcome us all, yeah
With so many light years to go
And things to be found (to be found)
I’m sure that we all miss her so
It’s the final countdown
The final countdown
The final countdown (final countdown)
(Oh)
Oh
The final countdown, oh
It’s the final countdown
The final countdown
The final countdown (final countdown)
(Oh)
It’s the final countdown
We’re leavin’ together
(The final countdown)
We’ll all miss her so
It’s the final countdown (final countdown)
(Oh)
It’s the final countdown
Yeah

The questions:

1. When it is hot, I _________.
2. I am looking forward to _________ this month.
3. The theme song of my life would be _________.
4. There is no such thing as _________.
***
My answers:
  1. When it is hot, which it definitely is in the summer here, I mostly stay inside the house with the A/C going.
  2. What am I looking forward to this month? More of the same, doing whatever I want, and hoping for more rain showers to cool things off. Nothing spectacular coming up as far as I know.
  3. The theme song of my life? I have no idea. I like all music, so every day would be a different theme, but I’ve included a video below that really speaks to me in all kinds of ways.
  4. There’s no such thing as …? There probably are such things somewhere. If it can be thought of, there’s a strong possibility that someone has figured out a way to make it happen, whether writing about it, doing it, or building/cooking/exploring/inventing it.

OCTPOWRIMO – POEMS – # 15 – MY WILDEST DREAM

Standard

OCTPOWRIMO – POEMS – # 15 – MY WILDEST DREAMIMG_20150928_151453

Today we were asked to think of our wildest dream. If we could dream anything, and it would come true, for one day, what would it be?

The poetry form I used, is called the Minute Poetry form. It consists of 3 stanzas, of 4 lines each. Each line has the syllable count of 8-4-4-4, 8-4-4-4, 8-4-4-4, 8-4-4-4 …and the rhyme scheme goes aa bb cc dd ee ff …It is also supposed to be written in strict iambic meter.

MY WLDEST DREAM

I send my words up into space

Another place

Into the sky

They will not die

My words pour down upon the land

a helping hand

for all mankind

program their mind

My words rain down from high above

For peace and love

Around the world

Kind words unfurled

~

I did have one of my wildest dreams come true. I did send my words (my name) into space. It was a contest for the Maven Haiku to Mars project, back in 2013. It is amazing to think of it happening! Here’s the certificate I got for submitting my haiku.
