Today, October 14, 2023 there was an annular eclipse of the sun. Where we are in Texas, we were on the edge of the path of the eclipse, so we didn’t get real dark. But you could definitely see a difference in the atmosphere. It started getting dimmer as the time went on.  It is an eerie and strange feel to the air, and no sounds from birds or anything. It’s all hushed or muffled it seems. From a very bright sunny day with no clouds, it seemed a shade had come over the sky and earth. It was a shadowing.

First photo shows the sun with the shadow that has moved about half way in a crescent shape over it. The second photo is showing the edge of our house & tree, in deep shadows, as the sky has dimmed a lot, and the sun is still there and off to the side it is showing the crescent shape. I don’t know how the phone camera I used did that.

An article I read says: An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon covers the Sun’s center, leaving the Sun’s visible outer edges to form a “ring of fire” .

This next photo is not squared, but it shows what the eclipse looked like when I put the dark glasses over the phone camera lens to take the picture. We did get beautiful orange rays coming out from the sun with the moon in front of it.  Or something like that. This is what we saw.

This is a photo of the sun rise. It is very bright, peeking out after the overnight rain.

See the black cat at the bottom of the photo? I interrupted breakfast time when I went out there, but he came right back. 🙂

Another time early morning after the sun is up a little higher.  This day started out all pink and gray, partly cloudy, with the sun’s reflection on the lake by our house.

I took this picture of Sonny the cat one morning as he was contemplating the first day of autumn.  I like how the photo showed the tall dried grasses caught the sunlight and also kind of outlined his fur in gold.

Weekly Prompts Weekend Challenge – Shine

I took this photo in January 2020, at about 11:35 a. m. with my camera pointed straight up at the sun. It was so bright and dazzling, I didn’t know if the picture even turned out, but this is what I got. The white hot sunlight throwing rays of light through the bare branches of our tree, all against the clear blue sky.

STAR DIAMONDS

Listen to me now

I’ll tell you how

A diamond got it’s

Shine

In the faraway time

There was a great sign

Deep space yearned for

Light

With a wave of His hand

The Creator of man

Tossed glittering stars

Above

And when this occurred

With only a Word

Diamonds were made for

All

They sometimes fall down

All the way to hard ground

Precious gemstones for all

Mankind

MOONLIGHT MADNESS

Beautiful orb up in the sky,

Shining bright, as night goes by.

New, quarter, half, and full,

Tides below, feel your pull.

Only one side do I see…

Reveal your dark side, please, to me.

Maybe some night, turn around…

To the world, you would astound.

Is it possible…could you try?

Would chaos rule…would mad-men cry?

Eclipse Experience

October 14, 2023

Today, October 14, 2023 there was an annular eclipse of the sun. Where we are in Texas, we were on the edge of the path of the eclipse, so we didn’t get real dark. But you could definitely see a difference in the atmosphere. It started getting dimmer as the time went on. From a very bright sunny day with no clouds, it seemed a shade had come over the sky and earth. It was a shadowing.

Our son in law came by and brought us eclipse viewing sunglasses so we could look at it safely. So we went out in the back yard to see what we could see. The sun looked like a beautiful crescent sliver of fiery orange in a dark sky. I guess the dark was caused by the heavily tinted lenses of the glasses, as they were totally dark, letting in only the eclipse, while the actual sky was blue, just a little dimmer.

It was so pretty.

Now I tried to take pictures, but they are not what I expected. I know I’m not all that familiar with my new iPhone 13, so I don’t know what the camera’s two lenses do. I was hoping to get what we saw through the glasses. We first took a picture with the glasses put right up in front of the phone’s lenses. I also just pointed the camera upwards (without looking) and took a shot of the sun that way.

We got these. A big bright sun in a dim sky (without the glasses lense) and a smaller one of the eclipse crescent. How that happened I have no idea, but it was that way on all the ones I took.

Then with the dark glasses in front, it turned out a really pretty darkness with bright orange rays radiating outwards.

So, I’m glad we got to see it. Next one is in April of 2024, and we will again get to see it.

Silver mackerel clouds tinted with pink are above trees silhouetted in black. We call these cloud formations ‘mackerel’, but other countries call them something else. In France they are called ‘fleecy’, in Spain they are called ‘cobbled’, and in Germany they are called ‘sheep’.

Oh, this reminds me of when I got into trouble at school in 2nd grade. I drew a picture of the sky and lots of fluffy clouds that really looked like sheep. The teacher told me off saying there was no such thing as sheep clouds. I knew she was wrong! haha 🙂

From a Wiki article:

A mackerel sky is a common term for clouds made up of rows of cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds displaying an undulating, rippling pattern similar in appearance to fish scales;[1][2] this is caused by high altitude atmospheric waves.[3]
