Getting a Jump

My theme this year for A to Z 2025 will be my personal review of restaurants I’ve been to, and a little story if I remember one. Some will be just observations, and others will be a repeat of a post if I’ve already done one about the places. Also there will be photos if I have them.

I found a painted rock at the DQ one time! It is blue with orange splotches on it. 🙂

Dairy Queen

plate of food from DQ

***

Our daughter gave us the DQ gift card for Christmas, so we used it to buy our lunch a couple of days later. The photo shows the meal of two steak fingers, French fries w/ketchup, TX toast, and a cup of cream gravy. It’s always good. 🙂

Funny story from the DQ:

One day we were at the Dairy Queen restaurant at lunch time. I noticed the sign out front, and from where I was sitting I could only see part of it. It was advertising the Blizzard, which is a very thick ice cream treat.

Well, the part I could see only said ‘Lizzard’, as the ‘B’ was blocked from my view. It struck me funny, saying to get an original ‘lizzard’ meal deal.

So, I got to thinking…how do you spell ‘lizard’? Is it with one letter z or two? It turns out it is with only one letter z. Why? It seems as though they short-changed the little lizards of the world, by only granting them one letter z. Lots of other words have two, such as the Blizzard treat, a real weather blizzard, and even a chicken has two in their gizzards.

I say we should give the lizards another letter z.

And, as Little Orphan Annie said, “Leapin’ Lizards!”

Dimba’s

part of a menu and we wrote on a pink paper what we wanted to order –

We ordered a 12 piece ‘mess ‘o fish southern style’, a small order of fried okra, 4 extra puffs, 1 large iced tea.

***

This is a tiny little place, not in any way fancy (or clean by the way), but they have fried fish platters and chicken platters. Tastes really good, but it’s way on the other side of town, so we haven’t been in a very long time.

***

Dickie’s

***

A cafeteria style barbeque place, that the food was just okay, nothing to get excited about, just regular bbq foods and sides.

***

Double Nickle

***

This is a very expensive restaurant, kind of done in an old west style you might say. We ate there once, and the food was very good, and the place was super fancy. We said we’d eat there again someday, but we would have to save our money up before then. So I made a big coffee can labeled with ‘double nickle fund’ and all the extra change we saved up went into the can. I think we might have saved up fifty dollars before we gave up. Spent the money on something else, and never went back to that place.

Dion’s

***

Dion’s is a pizza place close to our house. It’s pretty good, and fast, eat in or take out. They have an awesome huge salad I like a lot, too, just mixed salad veggies, and dressing.

Caprock Cafe

Caprock Cafe is a fun place to eat. It’s been here for many years, and there are two locations. It’s decorated really cool, there is music playing, (I think on weekends there is live band playing), and the food is excellent. In fact we just got takeout from there the other day for our supper … chicken fried steak w/cream gravy, jalapeno pinto beans, and twisted taters (twisty crisp fried). There is a bar serving drinks, and seating at tables, booths, split level, and also on the screened in patio. There are also souvenirs you can buy.

Here’s a photo of the food.

And here is one of the decoration things to look at in the restaurant. There is  an  airplane (blue & yellow) halfway crashed into the brick wall.

Chick-fil-a

I do like the chicken sandwiches at Chick-fil-a, and the waffle fries. We hardly ever get this though, as the Mr. doesn’t care for it.

Cast Iron Grill

The big boot planter is at the entrance to the Cast Iron Grill restaurant where we eat lunch sometimes. It’s located right off Buddy Holly Ave. and Crickets Ave. and is right next door to the Buddy Holly Center/Museum/Statue. This building across the street has a mural of Buddy Holly, the Crickets, and Peggy Sue painted on the side.

For some reason there is a pair of white ice skates hanging from the rafters in the Cast Iron Grill. Well, the more I look at these, they don’t really look like skates. They just look like white boots of some sort.

Cheddars

I’m not sure if this place is still here, but they used to have the very best queso dip and chips.

***

Chubby’s

This was like an old fashioned diner with booths and counter stools. We had breakfast there and it was really good.

Chicken Express

This is what we call ‘fast chicken’. We get take out, though sometimes we’d eat in. We usually got fish fillet instead of chicken, though, because it’s really good there.

Chuy’s

Chey’s is a Mexican restaurant that has good food. I wrote a post about it one time, about the Jalapeno Dip Flip Experience. So funny! Here’s the link to that … https://wp.me/p3RE1e-41d

Cancun

******

These are some booth seats in a restaurant we gone to a time or two. It was a Mexican restaurant called Cancun, and the food was pretty good, except for the tamales. They were different than I was expecting, and I didn’t like them.

I always like the decorations in restaurants. This one had a red wall, and the brown wood booths had black seats and backs of …well… I don’t know what to call that kind of material on the seats. It’s not fabric, it’s kind of slick, but not leather, either.

So, I looked up the word Naugahyde, because I think that is what this is. An artificial leather, or pleather or vinyl? I’ll go with that being what these seats are made of. 🙂

Cracker Barrel

This restaurant is fun! So many things to look at on the walls and shelves, and even outside on the porch. Inside is a little store, like a general store with tons of things to buy, like knick-knacks, souvenirs, movies, candy, clothes, and lots more.

They have all kinds of food, from breakfast to dinner, all kind of old fashioned home cooking. There are little wooden games we can play at the tables, too.

The best pizza I ever had at the time. I think about this place all the time, but we don’t have one here.

Burger King

Burger King logo I saved for scrapbook

***

the Burger King Baggler story (as shown on the bag)

This is funny. I copied it from I think a bag our burgers & fries came in. It says:

“Official Baggler Procedure: French fries that have attempted to escape from their container, only to strand themselves in the bottom of the bag, are called ‘bagglers”. Bagglers are fair game. The first to open the bag and retrieve the baggler gets to eat the baggler. Therefore, it is one’s best interest to be the keeper of the bag.” 🙂

We don’t eat Burger King food very often, though their burgers and breakfasts are good. One day we drove up to go in, and it looked so odd. Come to find out they were renovating the building, and most everything that was inside the place was on the outside in the parking lot! haha Well, then we had to go somewhere else to eat lunch that day. 🙂

***

Bonanza

***

This was a restaurant, cafeteria style I think (it’s been a long time since we went there, and it was in another city). Their food was pretty good though, a typical steak and potato and salad type business. I’m not sure if it was named after the TV show Bonanza or not.

***

Bless Your Heart

***

This was in our city, but not sure if it’s still there. It had ‘healthy’ food there, which was pretty good, but still kind of odd for me, since we hardly ever ate healthy type foods. One entree was I think called, a Chickaguakataco? So weird, but they had all kinds of stuff, best of which was the frozen yogurt, and I always got banana flavor.

***

Bahama Buck’s

Up on the wall at a shaved ice place called ‘Bahama Buck’s’, there was a pretty surfboard and some pictures of beaches and surfing. It’s close by our house but we almost never go. I got sugar free pina colada flavor last time I think. What is fun, is their plastic spoons will change color when they get cold on the shaved ice. I have an aqua one I saved, and it will turn purple. So fun! 🙂

***

Bigham’s Smokehouse

This is a pretty good BBQ restaurant close to our house. We’ve ate inside a few times but mostly we just go get take out. We get a variety plate, of sausage, brisket, and bbq beans, potato salad and Texas toast.

***

Buffalo Wild Wings

menu from Buffalo Wild Wings shows in sepia tone a buffalo (with added on wings)

***

Not far from our house, they serve all kinds of wings, all kinds of flavoring sauces and spices, plus salad, and other sides. They have a room off to the side that has game machines, too. Of course there’s the many big screen TV sets hanging on the walls. It’s been a long time since we were in there, and later after we were there one day, we heard the place got robbed. I’m glad we had already left!

***

Blue Moon

***

Really fancy Chinese or Japanese type place. Good food, but we only went once, as it was kind of expensive and way too fancy for us.

***

The Barton House in Salado TX

This is a fancy restaurant that was made from an historic home in the town of Salado. We went with friends and inside was really nice. We got all settled at a table, and then they brought the menus. We were flabbergasted at the high prices of regular meals. We all looked at each other, and got up and left. I think we all went over to McDonald’s then, which was much more our price range. haha 🙂

***

Barbara’s Burgers

I thought it was so fun to get hamburgers at Barbara’s Burgers in Bells TX way back when. We’d be traveling to my husband’s family in east TX and when we left we’d always stop in for a sack of hamburgers. Several in a paper bag, not huge, but delicious.
