Eclipse Experience
October 14, 2023

Today, October 14, 2023 there was an annular eclipse of the sun. Where we are in Texas, we were on the edge of the path of the eclipse, so we didn’t get real dark. But you could definitely see a difference in the atmosphere. It started getting dimmer as the time went on. From a very bright sunny day with no clouds, it seemed a shade had come over the sky and earth. It was a shadowing.
Our son in law came by and brought us eclipse viewing sunglasses so we could look at it safely. So we went out in the back yard to see what we could see. The sun looked like a beautiful crescent sliver of fiery orange in a dark sky. I guess the dark was caused by the heavily tinted lenses of the glasses, as they were totally dark, letting in only the eclipse, while the actual sky was blue, just a little dimmer.
It was so pretty.
Now I tried to take pictures, but they are not what I expected. I know I’m not all that familiar with my new iPhone 13, so I don’t know what the camera’s two lenses do. I was hoping to get what we saw through the glasses. We first took a picture with the glasses put right up in front of the phone’s lenses. I also just pointed the camera upwards (without looking) and took a shot of the sun that way.
We got these. A big bright sun in a dim sky (without the glasses lense) and a smaller one of the eclipse crescent. How that happened I have no idea, but it was that way on all the ones I took.
Then with the dark glasses in front, it turned out a really pretty darkness with bright orange rays radiating outwards.
So, I’m glad we got to see it. Next one is in April of 2024, and we will again get to see it.
