I may find some photos, hope so, but public transportation is something I don’t usually do. Here where I live we don’t really have much of this. Taxi, bus, who knows? We never see one anywhere in the city. We don’t have trains or subways either. I’ve been on all these, but in other places though. Maybe years ago I took a picture? … (airplanes will be later in the series)

***

Here are a couple … at the airport, but photos aren’t taken from an airplane. Would an escalator be considered public transportation?

This is a view of the outside of the airport, as we were riding the skytrain around the perimeter to get to our next boarding gate. Mostly it just shows the track we just passed over, but there is an airplane way down below on the left.

At the Kansas City Zoo one time, we took the little train that went all around. It would stop at different places for a few minutes so we could look at the animals and take pictures. The first one is of a beautiful giraffe by a tall tree, with lots of greenery and other trees in the background. He looks like he is watching us, too. 🙂

***

One stop was to stop and see the elephants. Here are two, and they are looking at us, too. Next was some white birds. Large and white with long pointy orange beaks. This one was standing on a log, drinking from a water bowl. There was a smaller young one doing the same thing. I think they were storks or cranes?

***

That’s all I could think of that I had photos of which might be okay for the prompt.

I’m not sure what this is supposed to be. Is it views of some kind of water? Is it ‘we’ are on the water looking at something? Is it us, seeing something on or in the water? I’ll find something that may or may not be right. 🙂

In Hawaii we took a tour boat to view this:

The USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL, in Pearl Harbor. After the ship was sunk, the bodies of 1,102 crew members were left underwater with the wreckage, which is still there today…a war grave. We visited this somber memorial many years ago.

I took this photo from the plane, as we were flying over Missouri. We were getting close to our destination of Columbia MO. It is the Missouri River, and I like how it snakes around and has all the little spiky edges of water.

A tour boat on the little river at the KC zoo, takes people on a scenic ride around the area. It was named the Mombasa Crystal. I think we were on the dock waiting to ride.

While visiting my daughter and family, we visited the National WW1 Museum and Memorial. We also went up to the top of the tower, where we could walk around the top looking at a 360 degree view of Kansas City. Way down below is a pretty fountain full of water.

I don’t know what was going on with the giant elephant statue on a trailer. We were driving down the road and I saw it in a parking lot, so took a quick photo. It turned out blurry, but still…not every day you see a random elephant!

This is a fountain photo I took as we were driving past. There are actually 3 there in the playa lake, and it is in Henry Huneke Park, where the Veteran’s War Memorial wall, and bricks are located. This park also has a statue of Willie McCool, one of the astronauts who lost his life in the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster, on February 1, 2003. He’d gone to high school here.

Gathered up from earlier posts on similar topics…

Anyway I’d gone out into the garage to see what I could find.

  • electric saw motor/engine?
  • garage door pulley/gear?
  • lawnmower engine/motor
  • overhead door garage contraption thing motor/gear/pulley/ engine? Whatever you call it, it’s broken. It’s been broken for years!

You can see I’m not very knowledgeable about such things. 🙂

Then in the house, I did find this clock that has it’s gears showing! 🙂 Yay! Something I knew what it was!

For this week’s prompt we are to find photos of gizmos and gadgets.

I’ve been trying to figure out the difference, if there is one, between gizmos and gadgets. I finally found some things that work for gadgets (I think), but gizmos? I just don’t know. 🙂

These were from older posts I’d done, and I know the words make it longer, but I like to explain things. Skip the words and just see the photos if you’d rather. 🙂

Dryer Ball Gadgets

These little cactus &  cacti (cactuses?) make me happy!

They are actually those dryer balls, you can put in your clothes dryer to help fluff, or reduce static, I think. Instead of being a ball shape, they are cute little cacti with pointy spines.

My daughter, grand-daughter, and I, had a great time playing with them the other day. We pretended they were little people, with funny voices, and scenarios. To say we laughed and had fun, is an understatement, as this went on for quite awhile. Oh, the cowboy hat is from my grand-daughter’s Toy Story doll, Woody. Of course we had to put a hat on them! We even thought we could have a little hat for all kinds of occasions, like Halloween, Christmas, and birthdays! We’ll see how it goes. 🙂

A Kitchen List of gadgets

***

Our vintage electric egg poacher

I was just thinking of all the kitchen appliances and gadgets we have that we never use anymore. They are all tucked away out of sight in the cabinets. For some reason we used them for awhile, then just got out of the habit, or stopped making food that we needed to use them. Anyway here are the ones I was thinking of.

  1. Bread maker
  2. Blender
  3. Juicer
  4. Toaster Oven
  5. George Foreman Grill
  6. Steamer Pot
  7. Electric Egg Poacher
  8. Mr. Coffee Iced Tea Maker
  9. Rice Cooker
  10. Small Food Processer
  11. Hand Mixer
  12. Waffle Iron
  13. Snack Master
  14. Ice Cream Maker
  15. Wok

That’s a lot, huh? I wish I had lots of cabinet/counter space so i could have these sitting out handy to use. Then maybe I’d use them. But we barely have space for our coffee maker, on one side of the stove burners, and the regular toaster on the other side. Our microwave is across the kitchen on another counter, and there is no extra room over there either.

Pink flamingo Whirlygig

From an AI answer:

A whirligig is most commonly considered a

gadget, specifically a kinetic, wind-powered, or hand-powered decorative, toy, or noise-making device. While it can be referred to as a “gizmo” or “thingymajig” (a term for an object whose name is forgotten or unknown), its distinct, often complex, mechanical, or decorative nature fits better as a functional gadget.

  • As a Gadget: They are, essentially, small mechanical contraptions or novelties. Many are intricate yard ornaments designed to move with the wind (e.g., figures riding bikes, chopping wood), making them functional, moving gadgets.

***

I’d say scissors of all kinds are gadgets, too

***

What a fun topic this is – Invention! However, hard to pick some, because everything we ever used then or now was invented at some time in history. Everything!  haha 🙂

***

Here are some of the ones I thought of.

Lots of different kinds of cameras I’ve had. There were earlier ones but I don’t have a picture of them. I had an old  box camera, and my dad would develop the photos himself. I also had a Swinger and a Polaroid that gave the pictures right then. Now it is so easy to take a picture with our phone camera! I’m glad they kept improving them.

***

Radios are favorites for me. I have a lot of them, from regular transistors, wind up emergency ones, shortwave ones, & police radio scanners.

The home movie camera was fun to use. (should be up there with the other cameras). I took lots of home movies with the Super 8 and got them developed. We could show them by loading the film reel onto the projector and then they would be displayed on a screen or a blank wall in the house. I still have this whole set up.

Trees are sturdy, until they are not.

Trees grow tall and solid and sturdy. But the wind can shake them around, sometimes so  much they fall down.

And then there are those that just fall down for no reason .

This happened in 2020 …

This is a photo from in front of our house. A few weeks ago one of the trees flopped down. The whole top broke off the trunk. We couldn’t see any reason for it. We’d not had any strong wind or storms the night before, but there it was, just a broken tree top in the road. We did call the city to let them know it was blocking the road a bit, and they came out and cleared it up.

Back in 2023 we had a wind storm that blew our already shaky fence down. We had it repaired and it became sturdy again.

We are to find things that are opposites, like old/new. Here I have two kinds of coffee pots. The old one is a vintage, drip style coffee pot, from the 1950s, made by the Wearever company. You heat the water, then pour it into the top part, where the basket holds the coffee grounds. The new one is the modern Keurig  Coffeemaker, which uses the K-cups type of coffee, which comes in all kinds of flavors. Either coffee maker works great. We most times use the new one, but have the old one as a back-up if needed. It heats up the water on the stove. 🙂

An old game: Mumblety-peg

Boy scouts were playing this game many years ago too, as this little old picture shows a group of them doing so.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mumblety-peg

Mumblety-peg (also known as mumbley-peg, mumbly-peg,[1] mumblepeg, mumble-the-peg, mumbledepeg or mumble-de-peg) is an old outdoor game played using pocketknives.[2] The term “mumblety-peg” came from the practice of putting a peg of about 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) into the ground. The loser of the game had to take it out with his teeth.

***

I doubt the rules to play Mumblety Peg was in this handbook. But I remember watching my Dad and his Dad (my Grand-dad) play this game.

Here’s my Dad’s well-worn Boy Scout Handbook.

A newer type game:

20 Q (the game)

Based on a parlor game called Twenty Questions, Robin Burgener, in 1988, invented a hand held electronic game he called 20Q. He was experimenting with using AI – Artificial Intellegence.

When you turn this game on, it will ask you to think of something for it to guess. It has a display screen that you can read it’s questions, and buttons you can push, to log in your answer, either yes, no, sometimes, or unknown.

This ‘toy’ will ask you a series of 20 simple questions. As you keep answering the questions posed, the device will build on them, to ultimately guess what you were thinking about.

In between the questions, it will make funny comments to you. On the package it comes in it states that it can read your mind. One of the comments it makes, is that it is spooky how it knows what you are thinking.

It is not programmed. It somehow ‘learns’ from every answer you give, and every time turns out different. Most of the time it guesses right!

I have two of these 20Q games, and have been amazed at how it can even do this. It occasionally does miss the answer, and will make a funny comment about how you can’t win them all.

I think it is a bit weird to be holding a sort of ‘mini brain’ right there in my hand. Like it says…it’s spooky!
