Sonification – No Theme Thursday – Cosmic Music

No Theme Thursday

For Kevin’s challenge:

No Theme Thursday: 2/13/25

Kevin at his blog, “The Beginning at Last” (above link) give us several AI generated pictures to choose to write about.

This is the one I chose this time.

Kevin’s AI beautiful photo of the dark sky with bright & colorful stars & planets, and lots of musical notes swirling around.

From Wiki AI information article:

Sonification is the process of converting data into sound. It can help people analyze complex data sets, improve learning, and make space sciences accessible to people who are blind or partially sighted.

The music from the stars and planets is amazing to hear. They have sounds like no other arrangements, such as deep roars, tinkling glass sounds, squeaks, whistles, and rumbles. In the videos below you can see how NASA has put the sounds they record with the pictures the telescopes take of the universe to make a stunning way of seeing our universe, with galaxies, and black holes, auroras, and more.

I’ve always been interested in astronomy and looking at the night sky. My dad built his own telescope, so when I was a kid we’d look at the planets and the moon. We’d see the rings of Saturn, and the craters of the moon, and chart the constellations. There were times I’d sneak out of the house in the middle of the night to search the skies for UFOs, too. I’ve seen the ISS going by, and also what we thought was Haleys comet one time, but later found it was not. There were two I read about … 1956 – comet Arend-Roland, and 1957 – comet Mrkos. One of those were probably what we were seeing when I was a kid.. Later we saw the Hale Bop comet for many nights, too. Shooting stars were always fun to make a wish upon.

I’ve never gotten tired of looking up at the stars.

A photo I took at the MacDonald Observatory,  at Ft. Davis, Texas, one of the largest telescopes in the world. There are ‘star parties’ and gift shops. The photo shows the large white dome of the observatory, where we could enter the building, and up on a cliff is the actual dome of the telescopes.

A magnet I have from the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico. It shows three of the large radio sensors on a dark purple background and says National Radio Astronomy Observatory New Mexico. They search the skies for radio waves from the stars, planets and galaxies.

An approximately 30 min. video explaining what Sonification is, with interviews with several astrophysicists, and also from a woman who is blind, as she tells how she interprets the sounds.

If you could choose any person from history to be your imaginary friend, who would it be and why?

Galileo, because he and his ideas fascinate me. His contributions to the field of astronomy gets my attention because of how much I love looking at the stars, moon, and planets through my own telescope. It has been said he is the ‘father of observational astronomy’.

“Galileo”, by the Indigo Girls, was released in 1992 from their album, “Rites of Passage”. It was written by Emily Saliers, and is on the Epic label.

60s, 70s, 80s, 90s: Which decade do you love the most and why?

I liked the middle 60s and all the 70s. I was a teen in the 60s, and was still having fun at school, then graduating, getting married, having kids, traveling to places near and far.

When you die, what do you want to be remembered for?

Being nice & friendly to all…people and animals, and promoting peace. And…for my writing of all kinds of things like essays, poetry, fiction pieces, diaries, and this blog! 😉
