The link below is where you find several prompt questions and other instructions

For John’s challenge:

Writer’s Workshop Prompts for July 25, 2024

***

Here are the prompts for this week’s Writer’s Workshop:

  1. Write a post based on the word alarm.
  2. Write a post in exactly 13 sentences.
  3. Write a fairy tale: start with “Once upon a time” and end with “And they lived happily ever after.”
  4. Tell us about your favorite disk jockey, past or present.
  5. Write about the first time you went to a sporting event.
  6. Tell us about an event that brought you closer to your faith.

***

1. I will try to write a post in only 13 sentences, but I know it won’t be easy.

2. I probably went to my first sporting event when I was a kid, and my dad took me to a rodeo in our town. 🐎🐎🐎

3. The rodeo was going along fine until the clown came out and scared me. 🤡🤡🤡

4. He was clowning around and tossed something up into the audience, which I thought was a skunk; I still don’t know what it was, maybe just a towel? 🦨 🦨 🦨

5. The object came right toward me, so I screamed and spilled my coke and popcorn. 🍿🍿🍿

6. I’ve hated clowns ever since.

7. Now for the first suggestion – alarm.

8. Is an alarm the same as a siren?

9. We finally, after many years got a bunch of sirens to announce a tornado in our city, but honestly, if it was raining and hailing and lots of wind happening, we could not hear the sirens at all. 🌪️ 🌪️ 🌪️

10. They test the sirens every so often, and I’ve opened the back door to try to hear it on a perfectly calm and quiet day, and if I concentrate really really hard I can just faintly hear something, so what good are they … none!

11. One time (in Japan) I caught the stove on fire, and called the fire department and they came with sirens blaring. 🚒🚒🚒

12. They took care of the fire before much damage, except for the stove, but it was embarrassing when the episode was written up in the Stars and Stripes Army newspaper under local emergency calls.

13. And here it is the number 13, and the final sentence of the prompt, so I can say Woo Hoo I did it. 🙂

This week the theme is to find a song that includes the lyrics “hot, burning, fire or blazing”, suggested by Nancy aka The Sicilian Storyteller.

From my 2019 post with this song: (I’ve since listened to it many times and is a favorite)

There were so many songs to choose from! I kept looking until I found this one. I hadn’t heard it before. I first saw this cover version of Ellie Goulding’s song, “Burn”, and I loved it! Then I listened to the original, and it’s great, too.

I got interested in the artists/musicians in the cover performance, and they have a lot of songs.

From Wiki:

Postmodern Jukebox, also widely known by the acronym PMJ, is a rotating musical collective founded by arranger and pianist Scott Bradlee in 2011. PMJ is known for reworking popular modern music into different vintage genres, especially early 20th century forms such as swing and jazz.

***

This is done in a Vintage 60s girl group fashion, featuring Robyn Adele Anderson. Their music can be found on Mud Hut Digital and Concord Records.

Note the flaming saxophone! Cool! … (and the fire extinguisher is handy just in case!)

***

“Burn”, by Postmodern Jukebox, is a cover of Ellie Goulding’s song. This one was put together by Scott Bradlee in 2014.

We, we don’t have to worry ’bout nothing‘Cause we got the fire, and we’re burning one hell of a somethingThey, they’re gonna see us from outer space, outer spaceLight it up, like we’re the stars of the human race, human race
When the lights started out, they don’t know what they heardStrike the match, play it loud, giving love to the worldWe’ll be raising our hands, shining up to the sky‘Cause we got that fire, fire, fireYeah, we got that fire, fire, fire
And we gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burnWe gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burnGonna let it burn, burn, burn, burnWe gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Anything Man Made

So, anything man made? How about this – someone somewhere made this bar-be-que grill out of metal.

Then my ‘man’ (husband) made this fire in the grill, so we could have home ‘man’ made hamburgers yesterday. Yes, he made the burgers. 🙂

***

“Burgers on the Grill,” by Bob Rivers, was recorded in 2003. This one is done to the tune of the Doors song, “Riders on the Storm”.

Riders On The Storm – Doors)

Burgers on the grill
Burgers on the grill
I’ve really had my fill
Of burgers on the grill
When the relatives go home
I’m stuck with chicken bones
And burgers on the grill

There’s a steak tip on the coals
It fell down through the holes
And now it’s caught on fire
Smells like a funeral pyre
I was tryin’ to get it back
But it’s turnin’ pretty black
Steak tip on the coals

Yeah!

Wiener on the foil
The skin begins to boil
I dropped it in the soil
I thought that it was spoiled
So I washed it with a hose
And fed it to Aunt Rose
Wiener on the foil

Burgers on the grill

Just In Case – A Fire – Afire

***

I was looking back at some older posts of mine when I hadn’t been blogging very long, just to see what I’d written. This one was from December 15, 2014.

So, just in case you need something to read today, I’m re-posting it. At the time of the first posting only one person read it, and she is/was my neighbor. Thanks K! 🙂

A FIRE…AFIRE

Just thinking about fire. You know when you are thinking of something and you say your thoughts are on fire, or when you’re writing something, and it is going really good, you feel like you are on fire with the words pouring from your mind, this is a good thing, right? I guess it is a bit of a cliche, or just a figure of speech, to say or hear the words someone says to you, when you are getting things done at a good pace, “Wow, you’re really on fire, today!”

Everyone knows we are not literally on fire; it’s basically a compliment…I think. But, have you ever really been on fire? I would hope not, and my prayers go out to anyone who has been. However, I have been on fire, sort of…my hair caught fire one time.

It is a funny story, now, but at the time it could have been worse. It was on my birthday, a few years back. My daughter had made me a super cool cake, made from Krispy Kreme doughnuts, covered in chocolate frosting. I leaned over to blow out the candles on top, never noticing my long hair had caught on fire. I heard sizzling and everyone started hollering and hitting me! Well, that’s just great…a great way to wish someone a happy birthday. Then, I heard what they were yelling, that my hair was on fire! Well, it didn’t do too much damage, and we did laugh about it, later. The cake was delicious, too!

Another time I encountered a fire, was when I was doing telemarketing. It was for selling those local coupon booklets. The company promised delivery of an order within minutes of placing one. This day, though, the drivers were all out on calls, and I volunteered to drive the booklet out and collect the money…but, it was to the next little town over. I knew I could do it, though, and I hurried over there. When I got to the house and knocked at the door, no one answered. The main door was open, just a screen there, and I could see the lady. She was asleep on the couch. The only thing was, was something was on fire in her kitchen! Smoke was coming out of there, and I kept hollering for her to wake up. Finally, she did, and ran in there to put it out. She was happy I came by when I did. I collected the money and left.

This next time, me and my husband were traveling down the highway, between towns. It was very seldom we saw a house or farm along this stretch of road. The weather was dry, as usual, in Texas, and the grass was all crispy brown like it gets at times. As we passed along, we saw a small wildfire just getting started, out in these people’s field, coming closer to their house. The lady of the place was frantically trying to smother the fire with a blanket, but needed help. We pulled over, jumped out of the car, and helped her put it out. A couple of more passersby did the same. Glad we were able to help.

Well, another time, I did catch the stove in our government housing afire. I forgot the cinnamon toast in the broiler, and it went up in flames. I called the fire department, who came with sirens and lights. The whole neighborhood came out to watch. Our stove was toast! Kaput! There was a write up in the newspaper about it, later, and was a bit embarrassing that my lack of focus concerning bread in the oven (a bad habit of mine) had caused such a commotion.

Those are the fiery thoughts I had today. Hope you have had better luck with fire!

Cheap Trick – The Flame Lyrics

Another night slowly closes in and I feel so lonely
Touching heat freezing on my skin
I pretend you still hold me
I’m going crazy I’m losing sleep
I’m in too far
I’m in way too deep over you
I can’t believe you’re gone
You were the first
You’ll be the last[Chorus]
Wherever you go I’ll be with you
Whatever you want I’ll give it to you
Whenever you need someone
To lay your heart and head upon
Remember after the fire After all the rain
I will be the flame
I will be the flameWatching shadows move across the wall
Feels so frightening
I want to run to you I want to call
But I’ve been hit by lightning
Just can’t stand up for falling apart
Can’t see through this veil across my heart over you
You’ll always be the one
You were the first
You’ll be the last[Chorus]I’m going crazy
I’m losing sleep
I’m in too far
I’m in way too deep over you
You’ll always be the one
You were the first
You’ll be the last[Chorus]
