Road Scholar is a nonprofit organization that creates travel-and-learning programs for adults. The organization began in 1975 under the name “Elderhostel” and later changed its name to Road Scholar. These programs combine exploring new places with educational sessions led by expert instructors. The programs are designed primarily for older adults who want to stay active and engaged through life by learning about history, culture, nature and more while traveling. By offering these kinds of experiences, Road Scholar supports adults in continuing personal growth, meeting new people, and discovering new places in meaningful ways. Because it is a nonprofit, it emphasizes learning over profit and offers some financial help so more people can participate. The organization offers thousands of different adventures both within the United States and around the world, covering many countries and topics.

Examples of programs include:

  • A six-day “In the Classroom” program in New York’s Chautauqua Institution focused on history, literature and culture.
  • A six-week “Living and Learning” overseas cultural and language immersion program (for example in Berlin or Provence) where participants live like residents, take language classes and explore local culture.
  • A grandparent-grandchild camping adventure in U.S. national parks, designed to combine family travel and learning in nature.
