Founded in 1997, Access 4 Learning (A4L, formerly the SIF Association) is a nonprofit organization focused on enhancing the interoperability of educational data systems. A4L collaborates with educational institutions, governments, and software developers worldwide to promote secure, standardized frameworks for data exchange. Its goal is to support efficient data interoperability, allowing institutions to better manage and use student and administrative data. As an international nonprofit community primarily active in Australia, New Zealand, North America, and the United Kingdom, A4L is funded entirely by membership dues.
A4L's primary project is the development and management of the Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF), which enables seamless data sharing across different educational systems. A4L also provides a platform for members to collaborate on creating standards and best practices for educational data usage.
The Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF) is a set of technical blueprints designed to allow diverse educational applications to communicate and share data. The SIF Specification is divided into two key components: the Data Model and the Infrastructure.
The SIF Specification is platform-neutral, using XML for flexibility, which ensures its compatibility with various systems and its ability to evolve with technological advancements. Each release includes updates to both components, ensuring that data-sharing methods remain secure and effective. The most recent infrastructure, SIF 3.7, leverages REST APIs to provide even greater flexibility and scalability for developers.
A4L brings together a global community of members who collaborate on developing new tools, standards, and best practices for educational data exchange. The organization provides training, resources, and support for the implementation of these standards, with the aim of improving learner outcomes by fostering a data-driven approach in education.
