Established in 1961, the AARP Foundation is the charitable affiliate of AARP (American Association of Retired Persons), serving AARP members and non-members. The foundation focuses on serving vulnerable people 50 years and older by creating and advancing effective solutions to help reduce poverty and systemic injustice experienced by older adults. The foundation collaborates with partners and provides legal advocacy efforts to help individuals secure sustainable employment and eligible benefits. The foundation also aims to support sustaining social connections to help overcome feelings of isolation.

Initiatives include:

  • Providing free programs and services that offer foundational technological skills for older adults, with funding from Google.org
  • Volunteer opportunities with Experience Corps, connecting highly trained adults over 50 to help K-3 students become better readers by the end of third grade
  • Foundation attorneys advocate for the legal rights and interests of people over 50 on a national level, including a recent civil rights case regarding residents in nursing homes in D.C.
  • Assisting older adults with enrolling in SNAP programs for monthly benefits to purchase food
