Haunted High School – SOCS – School

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Aug. 31, 2024

Lubbock High School was founded in 1891, and moved to this brand new building in 1931. It was built in the Romanesque Revival style. I think it is a beautiful building.

LHS is haunted. This fact has been known for many years. I, myself, experienced weird things, when I attended classes there. People have seen ghostly figures in the bell tower, and heard music coming from empty rooms. There are strange knocking sounds from inside the sealed walls, and I could feel the strangeness while walking in the 3rd floor back hallway. The arches in front are very spooky. You can hear a weeping woman, if you stand in a certain spot under them, and the auditorium and balcony have been the sight of other haunting episodes. There are also several gargoyles on the building.

Some of the past students who went on to become famous were, Buddy Holly, Natalie Maines (of the Dixie Chicks), Ralna English, and Mac Davis, among many other notables.

I only went to this high school for one year, 10th grade. I wanted to graduate from this one, but the city built another school just down the street from our house, so I had to go to that one for my jr. and sr. year and graduate from the new one. It was ok, as all my childhood friends had to transfer over too.

The fun thing, since we were the very first to be in the school, we students all got to vote on what the school colors would be (blue & silver), what the sports teams names would be, (Matadors), the school motto, song, and everything else that came along.

Later on I went to a business college for awhile, but it got blown away in the 1970 EF5/6 tornado before I could finish.

1. Do you remember your first teacher at school?  … Yes, I remember most all my teachers. My first pre-school teacher was Mrs. Lewis, then 1st grade was Mrs, Prather.

2. What was your best and worst subjects? … Best was English, worst was P.E. and math, equally horrible.

3. Were you encouraged in class or did you just muddle along?  … Nothing special, I just did the class work and homework.

4. Would you like to be a student today? … No way!

Dear Diary,

5/20/61 – J (cousin) and I played. We went to the air show (put on by the Air Force). When we came home we played. Grand ma came over and N (aunt) came over. We asked if we could spend the night over there. The men went fishing. N spent the night over Grand ma’s. We did too. I slept on the coucth (couch)

5/21/61 – I played all day. We went to the store. When we came back we played. Then we went home and played. then we went to see how much money it would cost to go to Idho (Idaho). When we came home Grand-pa came over and ate super with us.

5/22/61 – I went to school. When I came home I played.

5/23/61 – I went to school. when I came home I played. Then we went to the store. Then went to Grand-mas. Aunt D came over. When we came home I played.

5/24/61 – I went to school. When I came home I played. At night Grand pa came over. B, H, V, D, and J (aunt, uncle & cousins) came over.We played a long time.

5/25/61 – I went to school. J (cousin) came over to play. When she went home we went to the golf range.

5/26/61 – I went to school and I played.

5/27/61 – I played all day. C and E (great aunt and uncle) came over Grand mas.

5/28/61 – I played. We went to Church – When we got home I played with J (aunt)

5/29/61 – I went to school. When I came home I played. Grand pa came over.

5/30/61 – I played with J (aunt) She and V (cousin) spent the night.

5/31/61 – I went to  school. It was the last day. When I came home we went to the store. Then to the dime store.

Dear Diary,

3/3/61 – I did not got to school. I played with J (cousin). Then I played out side. When I came home I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

3/4/61 – I played. I watched tv at morning then I went outside. Then I went over to granny’s and played with S (cousin) and B (cousin). Then we ate supper. We played outside. When we went home I went to bed.

3/5/61 – I played. It was windy. I went over to J’s (cousin) and played. Then I went home. I played some more. We went over to J’s house. It was her brithday (birthday). She got hair clamps, an Ester hat and purce (purse), a dollar in change, two skirts, a dress. We ate cake. Then we went home. Then I went to bed.  and a slip.

3/6/61 – I went to school. we brock (broke) the penyahta (pinata). we ate the candy. When I came home I played with clay. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed. I had a headace (headache). It was when the Alamo fell.

3/7/61 – I went to school. I played. When I came home I went over to J’s (cousin) house. When I came Home I played. then I watched tv some. Daddy made some popcorn. Then I went to bed.

3/8/61 – I went to school. When I came home I played. J (cousin) came over to play. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed. M and O (parent’s friends) came over.

3/9/61 – I went to school. I made a puppet. When I came home Granny was over. P (sister) and I played. Then We went to the library. When I came home I went to bed.

3/10/61 – I went to school. I finished my puppet. When I came home I played. Then I went utside. Then I came in and went to bed. I went over to J’s (cousin) house and played

3/11/61 – I played. P (sister) was sick. Then We went to the Stamp Center. When We came home I went over to J’s house. I spent the niht. We played all day.

3/12/61 – I played with J. I stayed until 3:00 oclock. When I came home I played. Then we went over to Grandma’s house. It was N’s (aunt) birthday. When we came home I went to bed.

Dear Diary,

2/1/61 – I went to school and had fun. we went out side for since (science). when I come home I played outside. when we come In we ate supper and watched tv. then we went to bed.

2/2/61 – I went to school and had to show a wheel of food and to tell about a murail (mural). mother came to school to here (hear). When I came home I played. At night Granny, aunt M, and B came over. When they went home we went to bed.

2/3/61 – I went to school and had fun. when we came come home we went to Grand mas house. When we went home we went to the store. When we came home I played and went to bed.

2/4/61 – I played then daddy and I went to the library and Sears and to the post office. when we came home we went to the show. (movie…I wish I’d have written what show we saw!) When we came home we ate supper and went to bed.

2/5/61 – I did not go to school today  it is Sunday. I played all day. I could not find any thing to do. we made a  house and played in it. When we got thrugh (through) we went to bed.

2/6/61 – I went to school. we went to the plantaterryen (planetarium). When we got out of school I got into the car. B (aunt) had brought me a dog. We have not named it. then we went to bed.

2/7/61 – This morning I named our dog Dusty. Then I went to school. When I came home I played with Dusty. after that we watched tv. Then we played with Dusty. Dusty stuck his nose in my shoe and then he curled up in my nightgown. Then we went to bed.

***note*** weird and fun fact… Dusty was the dog I knew I would get, because I’d asked the Ouija board if and when I would get a dog. It said yes, and told me when. It came true! Dusty was with us for 9 years before he crossed the rainbow bridge (I was in my senior year of high school)

2/8/61 – I went to school. J (cousin) came over. At night we went over to see N (aunt) and B (uncle) Then we went to bed.

2/9/61 – I went to school. We made some pictures. After school I went over to Grandmas house. Her dog grew a lot. I ate supper over there. When we went home we went to the library. When we came home we went to bed.

2/10/61 – I went to school. when I came home daddy took a treatment,  (chiropractic) so we did not go bowling. we stayed home, and then we went to bed.

Dear Diary,

1/22/61 – We went to eat dinner over to grand-ma’s. After dinner we all went riding. we went to Abbernathy, (Abernathy), New Deal, Hale center, Plainview, and to Tulia & Happy (all little TX towns around here). When we home we went over to Grand-ma’s and ate supper. When we came home we went to bed.

1/23/61 – I went to school and had fun. After I came home we went to get a book about birds and butterflys (butterflies) {these were a type of illustrated children’s encyclopedia they offered at the grocery store each week}. When we got home we ate supper and then played a game. Then we went to bed.

1/24/61 – I went to school. It snowed all day. When I was going to get In the car the door was stuck so we got in the front of the car. When I got home the trees were covered with Ice. then I traced some pictures. Then I went to bed.

1/25/61 – I went to school and got my report card. I brought my grades up. When I got home I showed It to mother and daddy. then I played and then I went to bed.

1/26/61 – I went to school. It snowed all day. daddy didn’t work today. at school we went to the museum. we went to see Ranching. we rode on a bus over there.

1/27/61 – I went to school and had fun. It snowed again. we did not go bowling because it snowed.

1/28/61 – today is Saturday and I did not go to school. P (sister) and I went out and played in the snow. we drwe (drew) all day.

1/29/61 – we played all day. we played with tinker toys and Paper dolls. Grand ma and Grand-pa, N (aunt) and B (uncle), H (uncle), and B (aunt) came over. when they went home we watched tv then we went to bed.

1/30/61 – I went to school and had an acheighment Test (achievement test). when I got home P (sister) and I got to ply (play) in the snow. when daddy came home we went to the store and got a book about cats and money. Grandpa came and got our dog house, so their puppy could sleep in it. then we went to bed.

1/31/61 – I went to school and we finished our test. When I got home I played outside. the snow has melted. M and O (friends of my parents) came over and we showed fims (films – home movies). When they went home we went to bed.

Dear Diary,

1/15/61 – This morning we went to grannys house. we stayed till about 5:30. we ate dinner over there. after dinner we talked. Daddy and the men played 42. (Dominoes). P (sister) and I went utside and played with C (a neighbor girl). I found 5 Christmas trees in the ally (alley). We set them up and played under them. In the ally, I foand (found) a live plant. When we were going home we hade (had) an Ice crem (cream) cone and then we went home and I watched 3 shows . after that I ate supper, then I took a bath and went to bed.

1/16/61 – I went to school. after I went to school I came home and went to the store and to the cleaners and to the dime store. then we went home and I went over to play with J (a neighbor girl)

1/17/61 – I went to school and had fun. I went over to B’s (aunt) to play. when I went home I went to Piggley Wiggly (grocery store) and got a book of Wild Animals. I will get one every week. they will be different ones.

1/18/61 – I went to school and played with the fifth grade at play pedired (period). We had a vistor (visitor) his was Mr. Night. after school I went to have a shot. when I came home after a while we went over to granny’s house. when we came home I took a bath and went to bed.

1/19/61 – I went to school and had fun. it was B’s (uncle) birthday and at night we went over to N’s (aunt). Mother made a cake. B (aunt) was there and H (uncle), Grandma, Grand Pa, Mother, father, P (sister) and I was there. we all had fun. then we went home and went to bed.

1/20/61 – I went to school and watched tv all day to see John Kennedy. (maybe this was his inauguration to be President?) then I came home and had fun playing. we did not have any home work to do.

1/21/61 – I had fun playing. I turned flips on the wall. After dinner N (aunt) and Grand-ma came over. At night we went over to Ns and stayed a long time then we went home and went to bed.

Q – What fashion did you like most, and least from your younger years?

The fashions I liked most back then was bell-bottom pants. I was pretty much the first one of my friends in Jr. High School, to get a pair. I remember they weren’t jeans, but a dark blue fabric, and had a white shoestring type lace up front panel. Everyone was impressed…haha. The only thing was, we weren’t allowed to wear pants of any type to school. This was in the 60s, and girls had to wear dresses, and the length had to be mid-knee, or we’d get sent home to change. That’s what I didn’t like about the fashions back then. I wanted to wear my cool bell-bottom pants! The very year after I graduated H.S., girls were finally allowed to wear pants.

Other fashions I liked after school was your basic hippie clothes. I had it all, from the tie-dyed t-shirts (I made a lot of these), hoop earrings, water buffalo sandals, leather purses with fringe, and long, bead necklaces that we’d string, using those tiny, multi-colored beads we’d buy in the sewing notions part of the dime store. I still love all those kinds of fashion/clothes, and still wear them. 🙂

Here’s Day # 1 Question:

What movie could you, or did you, see over and over again when you were a teenager?

I didn’t go to a whole lot of movies back then, but this is one I remember was my favorite. I’m pretty sure I saw it a couple of times at the movie theater, and I’ve watched it many times on TV since then. I still love it.

The movie I’m talking about is…”To Sir With Love”. It came out in 1967, and starred Sidney Poitier. It was based on the semi-autobiographical novel by E. R Braithwaite (pub. 1959). It features a lot of good pop music, and Lulu, a prominent singer, sang the title song. It also featured some music by the Mindbenders, a band from the same time. Funny story…a friend and I saw the Mindbenders in person, when they came to our town for a concert. We didn’t get to go to the concert, but we did go out to the airport to greet them when they arrived. We were thrilled to actually see them, of course! 🙂

Dear Diary,

12/8/61 – I did not go to school. I was sick.

12/9/61 – I played. N (aunt) came over. At night her and B (uncle) came over. At Evenin (evening) Grandma came over.

12 10/61 – I played.

12/11/61 – I went to school   I played. J (cousin) came over.

12/12/61 – I went to school. I played. J (cousin) came over.

12/13/61 – I went to school. I played.

12/14/61 – I went to school. I played.

12/15/61 – I went to school. I played.

12/16/61 – We went to twon (town). I bought Christmas presents. I played. We got our tree up.

12/17/61 – P (sister) went to the Doctor. I played.

12/18/61 – I went to school. P (sister) did not go. I played.

12/19/61 – I went to school. I played.

12/20/61 – I went to school. I played. We got our fim (film – home movie film)

12/21/61 – I went to school. I played. It was open house. We visited school.

12/22/61 – I went to school. We looked at all the rooms. We had our party. I got a bank. a comb. a purce (purse). a kye (key) chain. I had fun.

12/23/61 – I went over grandmas. I played.

12/24/61 – I played. It was Christmas Eve. We went to grannys. I got a grey poodel (poodle) dog. (a stuffed animal)

12/25/61 – It was Christmas. I got two balls, weveing (weaving) loom, purfume (perfume), How to draw a dog (a book), a babbette (a doll like Barbie, but not a Barbie…my cousin got a ‘real’ Barbie!), a suit case, concentrain (a concentration game), slippers, mossiken (moccasin shoes), pen, neclace (necklace) and bracelet.

12/26/61 – I went to twon (town). We played.

12/27/61 – I played. We went to the store.

12/28/61 – I went to twon  town. I played.
