August Authors – Jimmy Wayne (Barber) – Walk to Beautiful

For Bee’s  challenge:

Author August – James Barclay & Auri

***

Bee says:

This month I challenge you to share one of your favourite authors every day. As an additional challenge also share a song that connects in some way with that author.

***

As I mostly do, I’m featuring a favorite book instead of author. To me, favorite author means I get all their books and wish for more. If I like one book by an author, that doesn’t make them a favorite author, though the book might be.

***

I read a lot of memoir and autobiography, and biography books. Real people, real stories. This is just one of them.

“Walk to Beautiful” (My Story), by Jimmy Wayne (Barber). The words under the title say, ‘The Power of Love and a Homeless Kid Who Found the Way’.

Jimmy Wayne is a country recording artist, who tells of his life from early on, living in poverty, an abusive family life, and his struggles to better himself and his situation. He was in and out of foster homes, and detention centers, lived in horrendous conditions, and yet survived. Later on, he wanted to help other foster kids, by raising awareness , and made a 1,700 mile walk across America.

Here is the Wiki link to his full biography. Besides writing his story, he’s written other books, and still advocates for foster children everywhere.

There are lots of personal photos in the book.

Weekly Prompts One Day Challenge – One Day of Horror

Weekly Prompts One Day Challenge – One Day of Horror

For Gerry and Sue’s challenge:

Weekly Prompts – The One-Day Challenge

***

This is a true account of a mass murder. No disrespect intended to anyone, if you or anyone you know who are reading this was affected by this or any other horrendous act of murder.

Summarizing from the true facts …

Glass shattered, and bricks flew everywhere, as the blue pick-up truck came crashing into Luby’s restaurant. People were hit by the truck and debris, then gunshots rang out, again and again. Everyone scrambled for cover under tables, in a freezer…anywhere they could hide from the gunman.

Methodically roaming the restaurant’s dining room, firing round after round, and yelling that all women were vipers, the gunman murdered 23 innocent people, before taking his own life.

It began as a nice fall day…October 16, 1991. It was ‘bosses day’, and several groups of school administrators were dining in that day. Other diners included a local veterinarian, a chiropractor, housewives, mechanics, and employees of Luby’s. The mass murder left everyone and everything in shambles.

In the days to come, the crime scene was inundated with all the major, national news crews, with their satellite trucks, reporting on the murder. They were there for days on end…and then the funerals began.

It was a tragedy that will never be forgotten.

Those are the facts.

This now, is my personal memories of that one day. We lived on base at Ft. Hood, at the time. Killeen, Texas is an Army town, right by the base. Luby’s restaurant was right on the highway, across the way from the local Wal-Mart that I always went to, and just down the street from Killeen High School. My daughters were in school that day.

The first I heard of the shooting, was when I was at a small convenience store on base, not far from the house. My husband was at work. People were acting strange in the store, and I heard confusing snippets of conversations about a shooting…and about a mad-man going around shooting at several schools.

I hurried home and turned on the tv. The local stations were already covering the incident. They said it was just rumors going around about the schools. I was still nervous, though. Finally, I saw the school bus come down the street, letting the kids out. I don’t think they’d even heard about the shooting. I was very relieved.

This was in 1991, and still to this day, I am hesitant to sit by the windows at a restaurant. In my mind, I feel it could happen again, at any time. I mentally check for hiding places, and where the exits are, every single time.

There were heroes that day. The mechanic threw himself through another plate-glass window to create an opening for people to get out. His name is Thomas Vaughn. Another hero, in my opinion, is the woman who lost both her mother and father that day. Suzanna Gratia Hupp, later campaigned in the Texas legislature for the gun laws in Texas to allow concealed-carry. It passed.

I will not mention the gunman’s name, as he does not deserve any recognition.

An excellent book detailing this tragedy is “Anatomy of a Massacre” by Jason Karpf and Elinor Karpf.

***

This book, “Anatomy of a Massacre”, by Jason Karpf and Elinor Karpf, is an in-depth accounting of the mass murder shooting that happened in Killeen, Texas, at the Luby’s Cafeteria, in 1991.

In light of the mass murder shootings that are still taking place in this country and around the world, this was one of the first I’d heard about.

We were living in Killeen TX at the time, and everyone was scared and on edge for weeks after this horrible tragedy. It is one day we will never forget.

Amazing what you find in museums

This was not a planned photo. I took it in August of 2021. I happened to look down at a page in my book, to see this long, oval shaped beetle bug with very long antenna. Looks like he was reading the words.

Then I noticed (for today’s oddball) that the sentence right above it’s head said, “Becky, I’m not Tarzan.”

I figured this would be a fun oddball for today’s Square! 🙂

I always read while I’m eating a meal, and put my book in a wire book holder. I wasn’t paying attention until I started to read, and discovered I’d put it in upside down. haha! 🙂

FOWC with Fandango — Utopia

For Fandango’s One Word Challenge today, the prompt word is ‘utopia’.

This fits right in with the book I’m reading right now. It’s “Utopia”, by Lincoln Child.

I’m 3/4 of the way through, and let me tell you it is a thrill ride of a book.

The action is set inside a mega theme park near Las Vegas. There is a plot afoot, with several accidents with the rides. There are some bad guys behind this, and of course the good guys are trying to find out what is happening … before it’s too late.

I still don’t know what they have planned, but it’s leading up to something awful I’ll bet.

Dust – Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Phrase?

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS June 27/2020

***

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “coffee, tea, or me.” Find a flirty phrase of your own or use “coffee, tea, or me” in your post. Have fun!

It is Saturday and time for Linda G. Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday Challenge. SOCS is fun, so if you want to join in, just click the above link. 🙂

I’m not real sure what this prompt is supposed to be about … flirty phrases, or coffee, or tea, or me?

I did read a book years ago called, “Coffee, Tea, or Me”, and it was pretty funny. If I remember, it was about airline stewardesses and finding dates? Whatever, it was funny, and now I don’t know if it was fiction or true.

Flirty phrases – I never used any, and I never had anyone say any to me that I know of. I don’t really like such things anyway. I’d have to go googling some if I wanted to know any, but I don’t want to know any.

I do like coffee and I do like tea – hot coffee and cold tea. Some people switch it up and have cold coffee drinks, and hot tea. That’s fine if they like it.

What I wanted to talk about is that plume of Sahara desert dust that is spreading around the past few days. Have you heard of it?

It’s slowly covering some southern states, including TX. I have noticed a haze in the sky lately. Not a brown haze, though. They say where we are won’t be but mildly noticeable. Still, it’s strange.

However, if you want dust, just come here on a regular sand storm day when we have totally brown skies for hours if not days, with grit getting everywhere. Those I’m used to.

Not much going on around here today. Hope your Saturday is interesting! Take care & keep safe! ❤

2002 Michael Crichton – Prey

***

Here’s the book I’m currently reading. I’m about half way through, and it’s really good.

***

I’d been in a sort of a doldrums with finding something to read lately. I kept reading parts of old books I’ve read several times, and yeah, they were good, but after so many times, I just couldn’t finish any of them again. I really don’t like to be without something to read that keeps me interested for awhile, and want to read more every chance I get.

I have tons of books, old ones, and even new ones. The thing is, sometimes I’m in a mood for something, but don’t really know what it is …until I run across some book that will hook me for a few days.

This one I got at a book sale, probably, a long time ago. I hadn’t read it before, and I guess it just hit the right mood at the right time.

So, you can enlarge the photo to see the back cover synopsis, if you want.

Here’s what I’ve figured out so far.

The main character husband has been without a job for awhile, so stays home to care for the children. His wife has a high powered job, and is doing good, But…she starts acting very weird…like nice to everyone one minute, then cross and snappy with her family the next minute.

The baby gets sick.

There’s a super secret scientific lab out in the Nevada desert (the wife works there).

The lab is manufacturing tiny robot cameras. Some of them escape.

That’s as far as I’ve gotten. So…I have to keep reading to find out what happens next.

***

So, how do you go about finding something new to read? Like me, do you stand in front of your bookshelves, picking up one after another, reading a few words, then going nope, nope, nope, okay I’ll try this one…nope…Hey, this one sounds pretty good. Start reading it, and it turns out that you picked a good one after all! 🙂
