Nature Photo Challenge #28: Wild animals

***

We don’t have any huge wild animals here, but I have photos of a few smaller ones. I know we have skunks, opossums, coyotes, and small deer, but I’ve never seen but one. It was a coyote running across the road as I was driving. My daughter saw a raccoon in the downtown area not long ago. I had no idea those were in this area. Of course there are birds, but I didn’t include those this time.

Here is a turtle we found in our front yard one day. He walked around awhile, then my husband took him down to the lake by our house.

Here’s a couple of prairie dogs. We have them everywhere, sometimes even in our yards. They’re cute I think.

We also have jackrabbits . These were in my aunt’s yard one day.

Maybe not a wild animal, but tarantula spiders are pretty wild I think.

We have snakes, but hardly ever see one. Just happened to see this one.

Tarantula

This is Terry the Tarantula! I took his picture quite a few years ago when we visited Ft. Davis TX. He/or she was walking along the parking lot at the Indian Lodge cabins where we were staying. He wasn’t in a hurry, and neither were we, so we followed him around for awhile, and decided he needed a name, so we called him Terry.

Back when I was a kid, our neighbor lady would always talk about a place in a nearby town she called, Transler Hill. She said it was a hill that swarmed with these spiders. We always called them ‘translers’, and until many years later I found out how it was really spelled. I always wanted to go see this place.

Another time while living in Oklahoma, my husband and a friend went fishing, and when they came back to the house, they said to me to come look what they had. So, I did. They had a foam cooler, and it was full of these big Tarantula spiders they had caught.

They tipped over the cooler, out in the front yard, and these spiders crawled out all over the place. They went all over the yard, in the street, and even climbed up on our screen door. It was amazing! People drove by and stared at this crazy sight. Our cat at the time, a Siamese called Mr. Kat, didn’t know whether to run or try to catch them. He kind of did both.

I don’t know what happened to all the spiders, but I guess they all crawled off somewhere in the bushes.

We used to see spiders like this quite a lot, but it’s been a long time since we have.

The last photo is Terry the Tarantula. He lived in south TX, at Indian Lodge, over by Ft. Davis. We saw him out in the parking lot, so followed him around for awhile and took his picture. He was cool! 🙂

First is a tarantula. I took this picture when we visited Ft. Davis, in south Texas. The large spider was walking along in the parking lot at our hotel, the Indian Lodge. We named him Terry. He was a cool dude. 🙂

Next is a prairie dog. Here in town we have what we call Prairie Dog Town. It is a large field, where there are lots of the little critters. People come out to see them and listen to them bark. They’re really cute, and actually they can be found all over town. We even had one in our back yard once or twice.
