SOCS – Mugs

For Linda’s challenge:

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Oct. 26, 2024

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “mug.’” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

Here are a few of the coffee mugs we have. We tend to like the ones with pictures, or sayings on them, and also mugs from places we’ve been, or have some meaning for us.

Mugs are a pretty simple idea for gift giving, too. We always appreciate a new one.

I was thinking though, when did mugs become so popular? I know years ago my parents didn’t drink coffee from a mug, though in later years they did.  On old TV shows and movies, they didn’t use mugs. They all had nice coffee ‘cups’ and saucers. Do people still do this, or is it all mugs all the time now? And I guess the difference is the shape and the amount of coffee/or tea each will hold.

I remember my granny always had her coffee in a cup, but then would pour it a little at at time into the saucer and sip from there. First though she’d blow on it to cool it down. We always called that ‘saucered and blowed’. Later on I found out that this is a pretty common saying and thing to do, especially in the older days gone by. I tried it once, and it was okay, but too easy to spill hot coffee on yourself.

This is my coffee cup. I drink my coffee from this midnight blue coffee cup with a white alien face on it. It also says Roswell New Mexico. That’s where I bought it when we visited Roswell and the UFO Museum.  It’s kind of hard to see here, but on the midnight blue sky cup, there are tiny white stars. (click on photo to enlarge)

This is one of our coffee mugs we use every day. It is from Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico, and has a picture of a blue flying bat, and the words in yellow, “Bats need friends too!” on a black background.

***

I got this mug as a gift one time. It had designs drawn on it that you were supposed to color in with the markers you got with the kit. It was fun to do.

I decided I’d painted enough on my coffee mug, so went ahead and finished up with the baking/setting of the colors.

This was another mug I painted. It was a plain white one. I painted the words Peace on one side, and Love on the other in blue. Then added some blue and yellow dots around the rim & bottom.

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS July 23, 2022

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “the first 2-5 words at the top of the closest printed matter.” Open (if necessary) the closest printed matter to you. Use the first 2-5 words at the top of the page any way you’d like in your post. Have fun!

Well, this is an interesting prompt! If you want to join in, and also see other entries, just click the link. Thanks, Linda!

The only printed item I have close by is my coloring book and pencils. This one says ‘Catitude Is Everything’. I’ve not quite finished the coloring page, but I work on coloring every evening.

What does that statement mean, I wonder. I’ve heard it a lot. Well, cats are cute, they all have individual personalities as you get to know them.

Here’ my thoughts on being like a cat with ‘catitude’.

Be cute when you want smiles and admiration from your people.

Be aloof when you want to be alone for awhile. A good hiding place is needed, like a closet or under the bed. Don’t come out when called … unless it’s feeding time.

Be a beggar. Meow a lot and twine around your people’s feet when you’re hungry. This is tricky, though. If they give you boring food, you must immediately become aloof!

Be competent in the art of staring at your people. It makes them nervous. They may try to bribe you with treats, but ignore them.

Be mysterious. We cats come from an ancient species, so keep lots of secrets.

Be able to purr convincingly and you will have charmed everyone. ❤

The Escapist Coloring Club Prompt – September 1, 2020

***

These are just a couple of pages I colored lately. All were done in markers.

First is a design of a bird and a sun and some stars, all done in aqua, purple and red.

Next is some sort of bug/beetle with wings. This is mostly green and red, with some yellow. I made dots and stripes and such on some of the wings.

The Escapist Coloring Club Prompt – July 1, 2019

***

Well, looks like I never got around to posting anything for June, and here it is already July!

I did finally finish these two, just last night.

The first one of the big chicken and little yellow chicks…well it was fun to color, but tedious with all the little bits and pieces. I think I probably used several different color markers and also different colored pencils on this.

I always want to use yellow, but it’s so hard to get it to show up. I like the multicolored chicken though.

The second one is one from a regular kid’s coloring book. I find that the larger pictures are much easier, and fun for me. I used blue and red Crayola crayons on the birds, and a brown one for the bird bath. The flowers are red and blue, with green stems and leaves.

The pages shown are regular size, and then a part of it is enlarged.

Escapist Coloring Club – March

The Escapist Coloring Club Prompt – March 1, 2019

***

Well, I finally got started on painting this ceramic mug.

I’d gotten it a long time ago from my daughter, I think for my birthday. It came with these markers to use, but they were pretty much dried up, even though the package was new. So, I found this other blank mug to paint, that has little paint pots. I couldn’t find any other food safe markers, and the paints were food safe, it said.

I found out that painting the design is much harder than coloring with pencils or markers in a coloring book. Way harder!

It’s messy, and almost impossible to stay in the lines. So, it’s very slow going. The paint does dry in between sessions, though, so that is good.

Anyway, I’ve got a long time to go before I can bake them to set the colors. So far it’s fun to do, so we’ll see how it is when I’m finished.

I haven’t done anything in my coloring books lately, but here’s what I’ve done so far on the mug.

It’s July already! Hard to believe how fast the months are flying by, isn’t it!

I didn’t post a mid-month June coloring page, because we were on vacation, but I did color some pages. My daughter, grand-son, and I spent time at the kitchen table just coloring away while we talked and had snacks. It is so fun!

Anyway…I asked my grandson if I could post his original drawings and coloring on my blog, and he said sure I could. He’s 8 years old, and a good artist, I think, already. This time he was drawing characters from the video game, “Plants vs Zombies”. Here they are… 🙂

***

For myself, I finished one I’d started last time…

I made some progress on this red, white, and blue one…

…and, did a couple of other ones…

***

So, that’s my coloring fun through the month of June. It’s still early in July, and I’m sure I’ll have some more pages done before the month is done.

Wow! Here it is the month of May, already!

It’s time for another entry in the Escapist Coloring Club, hosted by Linda G. Hill. Find out how to join in, by clicking the link above. It’s fun!

Thanks, Linda, for thinking of this fun idea for us to do. 🙂

***

So, I did finish this lantern that I’d started, and showed you recently. I did it in all markers.

***

Then, I started working on this one of vegetables in a basket. It has more details to fill in, but looked pretty interesting. I’m using only colored pencils on this one. To me, it’s harder to use the pencils. I keep expecting the colors to be as bright as the markers, and they are just not. Maybe it’s the kind of pencils I have, or something, but I have to press down so hard to get them to show up, and almost have torn the paper!

I’m trying to do some shading on the vegetables, too. Still got some areas to finish, yet. So far I’ve been 2 days (well, nights) on this page. I only do the coloring for about an hour, because my hand is hurting by then. I still do enjoy the coloring and the books.

***

Here’s the books I used:

The first one my daughter got me for Christmas, and the second one I’m pretty sure I got at the dollar store.

The Escapist Coloring Club Prompt – January 1, 2018

***

I don’t mind saying, I love to color! I do have lots of those coloring books, and spend at least an hour every evening coloring in the designs. After a day of staring at the computer screen, and typing, I’m tired and need to relax a bit. I enjoy seeing the colors come together in a nice color combination, and most times try not to use more than three, possibly four colors on one page. I pretty much use markers, as they are bright. I use colored pencils once in awhile, but seem to have to re-sharpen them way too much. I don’t really worry about getting everything perfect, and that’s not really the point of it. To me, it’s relaxing just to be in the moment and wind down from the day.

Here’s the one I’ve been working on recently. It’s not finished, but I do like the color combinations of it. As you can see, there’s some coloring outside the lines, and a few skips where the marker didn’t quite cover the area, but that’s okay. Nobody’s judging, I’m not entering the picture in any talent contest, and I’m having fun. 🙂
