Cultural Venues — CFFC

Here are a few places we’ve been that are cultural.

The West Texas Walk of Fame, featuring the Buddy Holly statue, by sculptor Grant Speed, is located inside the Buddy and Maria Elena Holly Plaza, just west of the Center, on the corner of Crickets Avenue and 19th Street. The Plaza is open to the public dawn to dusk, year round. The West Texas Walk of Fame, and its induction process, are a project of Civic Lubbock, Inc. Many artists from around the area are honored here.

The Buddy Holly Center, a historical site, has dual missions; preserving, collecting and promoting the legacy of Buddy Holly and the music of Lubbock and West Texas, as well as providing exhibits on Contemporary Visual Arts and Music, for the purpose of educating and entertaining the public.

We visited the Piasano Hotel in Marfa TX one time. It is the historical site where the cast and crew stayed while filming the movie,”Giant”, which included James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Sal Mineo, Chill Wills, and Jane Withers among others.

From wiki: The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 1, 1978

The USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL, in Pearl Harbor. After the ship was sunk, the bodies of 1,102 crew members were left underwater with the wreckage, which is still there today…a war grave. We visited this somber memorial many years ago.

Listen to me and hold me tight
And you will see our love so right
Hold me darling, listen closely to me

Your eyes will see what love can do
Reveal to me your love so true
Listen to me, listen closely to me

I’ve told the stars you’re my only love
I want to love you tenderly
Those same bright stars in heaven above
Know now how sweet sweethearts can be

Listen to me, hear what I say
Our hearts can be nearer each day
Hold me darling, listen closely to me

Listen to me
Listen, listen, listen to me

I’ve told the stars you’re my only love
I want to love you tenderly
Those same bright stars in heaven above
Know now how sweet sweethearts can be

Listen to me, hear what I say
Our hearts can be nearer each day

Being from Lubbock, TX, the hometown of the late, great Buddy Holly, I chose this song from him. I do love all his songs. We have lots of reminders of his life and legacy here, including a museum center, street named after him and his band, murals, and a statue at the walk of fame here, a large concert venue named after him, and also his grave site.

This is the grave and marker for the well-known singer, Buddy Holly (Holley), who was from our hometown. It is located in our city cemetery, and is visited by people all over the world, some of who leave mementos of guitar picks on the headstone.

From a Wiki article:

True Love Ways” is a song attributed to Norman Petty and Buddy Holly. Buddy Holly’s original was recorded with the Dick Jacobs Orchestra in October 1958, four months before the singer’s death.

Holly’s widow, Maria Elena Holly, claimed that the song was written for her as a wedding gift. On April 29, 2011, Mrs. Holly unveiled the never-before-seen “True Love Ways” photo of their wedding kiss, now displayed at P.J. Clarke’s above Table 53, the table where they became engaged while on their first date, on June 20, 1958.[9]

“True Love Ways”, by Buddy Holly, was released as a single from the album, “The Buddy Holly Story, Vol. 2”, in 1960. It was written by Buddy Holly and Norman Petty, and is on the Coral label.

Just you know why
Why you and I
Will bye and bye
Know true love ways
Sometimes we’ll sigh
Sometimes we’ll cry
And we’ll know why
Just you and I
Know true love ways
Throughout the days
Our true love ways
Will bring us joys to share
With those who really care
Sometimes we’ll sigh
Sometimes we’ll cry
And we’ll know why
Just you and I
Know true love ways
Throughout the days
Our true love ways
Will bring us joys to share
With those who really care
Sometimes we’ll sigh
Sometimes we’ll cry
And we’ll know why
Just you and I
Know true love ways

Just because I like this song.

This is Pearl Jam with a cover of Buddy Holly’s, “Everyday”.

I was in the audience on this day, October 18, 2000, Lubbock, TX.

Being the hometown of Buddy Holly, the crowd loved Eddie Vedder singing the song.

It was one of best concerts I’ve ever been to.

Inside Our Heads

***

From a Wiki article:

Think It Over” is a rock-and-roll song written by Buddy Holly, Jerry Allison, and Norman Petty in 1958, originally recorded by the Crickets. This recording, released by Brunswick Records as a 45-rpm single (9-55072),[1] reached number 27 on the Billboard pop singles chart, number 9 on the Billboard R&B chart, and number 11 in the UK. Vi Petty, Norman Petty’s wife, played piano on this recording.

Think it over, what you’ve just said
Think it over in your pretty, little head
Are you sure that I’m not the one?
Is your love real or only fun?
You think it over
Yes, think it over
A lonely heart grows cold and old
Think it over and let me know
Think it over, but don’t be slow
Just remember all birds and bees
Go by twos through life’s mysteries
You think it over
Yes, think it over
A lonely heart grows cold and old
Think it over and think of me
Think it over and you will see
A happy day when you and I
Think as one and kiss the blues goodbye
You think it over
Yes, think it over
A lonely heart grows cold and old
Think it over
Think it over

Buddy Holly – Song Lyric Sunday – Famous Mentions

Such An Honor

For today’s SLS, Jim has asked for songs that mention famous people in the lyrics. Thanks, Jim!

The first song I though of was this one by Weezer. It mentions Buddy Holly and Mary Tyler Moore.

The video is shown as being the group performing in the diner that was a featured spot on the TV show, “Happy Days”.

I liked that show, and I like this song, too.

***

“Buddy Holly”, by Weezer, was released from their album, “Weezer (the Blue Album), in 1994. It was written by Rivers Cuomo, and is on the DGC label.

Fun fact – This was released on what would have been Buddy Holly’s 58th birthday, September 7th.

Fun fact – In a very early version of this song, the celebrities mentioned were Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire.

***

The song mentions Buddy Holly.

From wiki – Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959), known professionally as Buddy Holly, was an American musician and singer-songwriter who was a central and pioneering figure of mid-1950s rock and roll. He was born in Lubbock, Texas, to a musical family during the Great Depression, and learned to play guitar and sing alongside his siblings. His style was influenced by gospel music, country music, and rhythm and blues acts, which he performed in Lubbock with his friends from high school.

The song mentions Mary Tyler Moore.

From wiki – Mary Tyler Moore (December 29, 1936 – January 25, 2017) was a noted American stage, film and television actress, as well as a producer and social advocate. She was widely known for her prominent television sitcom roles in The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961–1966) and The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970–1977).[

[Verse 1: Rivers Cuomo]
What’s with these homies dissin’ my girl?
Why do they gotta front?

What did we ever do to these guys
That made them so violent?

[Pre-Chorus: Matt Sharp, Rivers Cuomo]
Woo-hoo, but you know I’m yours
Woo-hoo, and I know you’re mine
Woo-hoo, and that’s for all time

[Chorus: Cuomo]
Woo-ee-ooh, I look just like Buddy Holly
Oh-oh, and you’re Mary Tyler Moore
I don’t care what they say about us anyway
I don’t care ’bout that

[Verse 2: Cuomo]
Don’t you ever fear, I’m always near
I know that you need help
Your tongue is twisted, your eyes are slit
You need a guardian

[Pre-Chorus: Sharp, Cuomo]
Woo-hoo, and you know I’m yours
Woo-hoo, and I know you’re mine
Woo-hoo, and that’s for all time

Woo-ee-ooh, I look just like Buddy Holly
Oh-oh, and you’re Mary Tyler Moore
I don’t care what they say about us anyway
I don’t care ’bout that
I don’t care ’bout that

[Bridge: Cuomo and Sharp]
Bang! Bang!
Knock on the door
Another big bang, get down on the floor
Oh no! What do we do?

Don’t look now but I lost my shoe
I can’t run and I can’t kick
What’s a matter, babe, are you feelin’ sick?
What’s a matter, what’s a matter, what’s a matter you?
What’s a matter, babe, are you feelin’ blue? Oh-oh!
(And that’s for all time
And that’s for all time)

[Chorus: Cuomo]
Woo-ee-oo, I look just like Buddy Holly
Oh-oh, and you’re Mary Tyler Moore
I don’t care what they say about us anyway
I don’t care ’bout that
I don’t care ’bout that
I don’t care ’bout that
I don’t care ’bout that
