I used to do a lot of sewing, and mostly used paper patterns called Simplicity. I’d have something to make out of fabric in mind, then look through a large catalog of patterns at the store to find a design I wanted.

I think the name of these patterns was just right, as to me these were the easiest ones to understand how to use. There were other brands, but they were confusing.

Here’s a photo of a couple of pattern packages I used to have, of making aprons. I made a lot of these to give as Christmas gifts one year.

HOW TO MIND PAINT AUTUMN

Early Autumn, sunshiny day, not hot, not cold, just right. Go outdoors, sit on the porch or in a lawn chair. Or just open a window to sit by. A soft, gentle breeze teases your face. You smile. Close your eyes…you’ve already started your painting. Take a breath…breathe in the atmosphere. Internalize the sensations you feel and hear. Let your soul soar. Leaves in the trees are softly rus-rus-rustling. Some have put on their fall finery of yellows, reds, and oranges, while greens are growing impatient, waiting their turn. Behind your eyelids, you see their dappled colors, like flickering mosaics. Little strobes of glorious fireworks in the dark. Now listen…what do you hear? A dog, not near, bark-ark-arking his existence in this world, just for the joy of being alive. The musical tink-tink-tinkling of your wind-chimes provides a background for you to layer into your mind painting. Such uplifting, happy notes. A wafting of wood-smoke drifts by on the breeze. Someone is firing up their grill, one more time, before winter’s chill. A bird is squawk-awk-awking for attention. You take a peek, just to see who has fluttered down close by. You see big, black grackles, and doleful doves, rat-tat-tattling for morsels of munchies the cats have left behind in their tin bowl. The cats don’t mind. They are silently snoozing together in a pile, up on the lawn swing, the breeze gently rocking them. Dozing, you want to live in this relaxing place, mind painting forever, but it’s done. Your painting is finished…for now. It is perfectly preserved in your memory, to be cherished, as are many other masterpieces you’ve created. It is good..It is right…It is mind painting

MAGIC SPELL

Journey back in time with me

A quiet time, oh, can’t you see?

No internet, no political lies,

No news that constantly horrifies

Travel paths we trod when young

Friends, games, having fun

Make believe all is well

This is a windmill that has circles and exes, and lines in a spoke type wheel.

I took this photo at a farm with a corn maze one year.

However, this photo I was holding up the original by the front door, and the sun was shining on it. The wind was blowing the tree branches around, which cast shadows on the photo. I think it turned out pretty cool.

Intermission … have some peppermint candies. They are circle shaped!

This is a pretty daisy, I think. It is large and pink, with a black center. What strikes me about it is the three center circles.

I think it looks like an eye, and the closer you get the more you seem to fall into the black part, like looking through a window into space. There are little white specks way inside the black center which look like little stars. (to see even closer just click photo…it’s really cool!)

For me, the best place to see a sunset is right here at home, looking to the west as the sun goes down. There is always a beautiful twilight here, of bright orange and yellow skies above the land on the horizon, with bare tree branches silhouetted in black. This was taken quite a few years ago, but we see the brilliant sunsets quite often.

We have some beautiful sunsets here. These dark tree branches were silhouetted against the fiery orange and delicate pink sunsets.

Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge – Safety

For Gerry & Sue’s challege:

Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge – Safety

***

Lots of people are being warned of a particularly dangerous situation outbreak of  storms and/or tornadoes lately. We here have been included in this announcement yesterday.

***

Trying to take a lighthearted take on this, but seriously…please remember the safety tips in case any storms come close to your area.

***

***

Trying to find something to wear

In case we get blown into the air

They say we definitely should prepare

But what on earth should I wear?

***

What should you do during a tornado?

  • If you are indoors at home during a tornado – Go to the basement or a windowless first flood room such as a closet or bathroom. Duck under a table if possible and cover your body with a sleeping bag or blanket.
  • If you are in a school or office building – Move indoors, away from windows, and to the lowest floor. Crouch down and protect your head.
  • If you are in a mobile home – Evacuate and go to a nearby shelter or basement. If there is nowhere available, see the instructions below for the outdoors.
  • If you are outdoors – Lie down into a low area such as a ditch and protect your head. Do not attempt to outrun a tornado. Many exceed highway speeds.
  • In your vehicle – Get to shelter if possible, but do not try to outrun a tornado. If you cannot get to shelter, then stop the vehicle, keep your seat belt fastened, hide under a blanket, and duck below the level of the windows.

Another type of caution for your safety – a sign reminder to watch your step when there is a step up or down.

Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge – Dyeing

We always had fun at Easter, with hiding and hunting for the candy and the dyed hard boiled eggs. Dyeing them was a lot of fun, as we could get really creative. One of these in the photo even has glued on green hair, a funny face, and a hat. The coloring dye was either from a kit, or we’d just use regular food coloring. I think it was hot water, vinegar, and a few drops of the food color. They always turned out pretty.

Last is a rock I painted yellow and black. I painted the word Smile on it. For awhile I painted lots of rocks and left them around town for people to find.

Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge – Weather

For Gerry and Sue’s prompt:

Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge -Weather

***

The question was, I think, how do we manage in extreme weather. Well, we close the doors and windows, and stay inside until it’s over. This goes for sandstorm haboobs, thunderstorms, sleet & snow. Also for very hot temperatures up to 115 degrees F. in the summer. Thank goodness we have heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.

***

Here’s some photos of the Haboob we had here in 2019.

It was a wall of dirt barreling through the city, with very strong winds. Then it poured down rain.

The first three photos are from the local weather station, and shows the brown roiling dirt coming closer to the city.

Even my phone sounded an alert…Dust Storm Warning!

The last two are what I saw from our back door. The sky was all dirty, gritty brown. It lasted awhile. We do get these Haboobs every once in awhile here.

We were even mentioned on the national news!

***

***

Actual color of the sky during one of the haboobs (sandstorm) we had. It was red and so dark in the middle of the morning the street lights came on.

***

This is a sky photo & blog I posted on January 30, 2021. It shows how much blowing dust we have around here this time of year.

The week of February 14 & 15, 2023, our sky looked the same. We have these sandstorms quite often, some worse than others, some are actual Haboobs, and those are scary and intense.Visibility on most all our dust storms is low, and the wind is so high we have high wind warnings, like last week for several days.

***

Today’s weather report: Dust … I think I posted this one in 2019

We are having a sand storm this morning. The sky is brown with all the dust up in the sky. My phone says visibility is only 1,323 YARDS! Expecting wind gusts to 60 mph, too.

This photo is looking out our back door toward the lake, with the barely seen houses on the other side. Sometimes the dust is so thick you can’t see the houses.

***

“Dust in the Wind”, by Kansas

***

For today, the wind is forecast to be gusting this afternoon, so I would not be surprised that the dust/sand will be filling the sky again for awhile.
