DECORATING A CAKE

Don’t you love the pretty decorated cakes you see at the bakery? There are cute birthday cakes, graduation cakes, party cakes, and the beautiful wedding cakes. I’ve even seen some really crazy looking ones that they make on the tv shows. It is very interesting how they put those together.

I took a cake decorating class a few years ago. It was at a craft store. In a back room, several people would sit at tables, while the instructor taught us about the kinds of equipment needed, such as special tips, pastry bags, spatulas; and, about the different types of borders, flowers, writing, and colorings you could use.

The basic set of tools were included in the price of the course. One of our first assignments was to bake a couple of cake layers, mix up some icing, and bring these to class. We would practice on these cakes. It was a lot of fun, and we were thrilled to see our creation. Every class, we had another assignment. We learned how to do fancy borders, how to do different types of writing words in icing, mixing colors, how to do flowers, and leaves.

At the end, we got a certificate of completion, and we could proudly say we were cake decorators! I still have my kit, and still decorate cakes on occasion, just for fun. One of the best things I learned, was the recipe for that bakery cake type icing. It is very simple.

Decorating Icing (Buttercream Icing)

1 pound confectioner’s sugar (powdered sugar)

1/3 cup of Crisco (shortening)

1/4 cup water (slightly less for roses)

1 teaspoon vanilla

(if butter cream flavor is desired, omit vanilla and substitute 1/2 teaspoon Wilton’s butter flavor)

Combine all ingredients and beat with electric mixer, at least 5 minutes.

~

If you get a chance, you should take a class. It’s fun, and you get to eat your homework assignment!

Here are a few I made. Not the greatest, but sure were fun to decorate and eat!

  • Square sheet cake (3 cats & says Happy Cat Day)
  • Red/white/blue on white 2 layer cake (patriotic decorations – Election Day 2000) with two beanie babies red & blue
  • Square sheet cake decorated for the TV show The Amazing Race (2 girl figures drawn on)
  • Round white/yellow/blue Clown cake
  • Round white cake with pink roses
  • White/red/green Hello Kitty stand up cake

“MacArthur Park”, sung by Richard Harris. At the end of the video it explains that this is basically a true story, about the love lost by the composer of this song, Jimmy Webb and his girlfriend, who stood him up and married someone else. All the imagery in the song he said really happened. Here’s the Wiki link to the song and how it came about. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacArthur_Park_(song)

CEE’S ODD-BALL PHOTO CHALLENGE

Here are some odd-ball photos for this week. This photo challenge is fun, because we find photos of ours that don’t really fit into any certain catagory. Everyone probably has some like this, and never know why we keep them. Well, here’s a great place to show them. To join in the fun, just click the link above for the details, and to see other entries. 🙂

Now, let me tell you about these photos. There you see an old fashioned ice tray. It is not a great photo, but it was a very odd thing, because those little spikes you can see on top of the ice cube holders had grown up and out of the ice. I’d never seen such a thing happen, in all the years of making ice in the freezer!

Next is a cake. Nothing strange about a cake. It looked really good, as it was from the grocery store bakery, and was half chocolate and half vanilla. The odd thing about this cake was that our neighbor brought it to us the other day. So nice, right? Then I got to looking at the label and saw that it had been made several weeks earlier. It had an expiration date on there of more than a week gone by. We didn’t eat it.

Then, there’s the photo of some vegetables sitting on a shelf (below the surveys sign). I just thought it was funny/odd, because of the little sign over the produce, which says ‘produce test’. There was no other explanation. The fruit and veggies looked fine. I suppose it was to show how a fresh one is to look, but sounded like they were in school, being given a test! I had the clerk, who was working behind the customer service counter, take the photo for me, with my phone. She was nice to do that. 🙂

The last one is a photo of a random note I found just sitting there. I can’t remember if it was on the floor or on a shelf at the store we were in. Anyway, if you read the list on there, it seems to be a school schedule of someone’s day. Pretty normal…but check out the last entry. I like that it says ‘success’! Glad they made it through their day of school. 🙂

Paolo climbed into the cat thing and looked funny with his bottom on top, and his face on the bottom part. Next, is a decorated cake I made for election day 2000. At the time I made it that morning, no one knew what a fiasco the election would later turn out to be. 🙂

COLOR YOUR WORLD – OUTRAGEOUS ORANGE untitled 1024x768-outrageous-orange-solid-color-background

Today’s color to match is called Outrageous Orange. It is orange, but I think just a tiny shade different from all the other oranges. Hard for me to tell. Anyway, enjoy my pictures of orange stuff. 🙂

JUST JOT IT JANUARY – # 28 – SERENDIPITY

JUST JOT IT JANUARY – # 28 – SERENDIPITY untitled

Today prompt word is Serendipity, which means a happy accident or coincidence, and luck finding valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for.

You can find out more about this January challenge by clicking below:

Just Jot It January 28th – Serendipity

~

I could have used my post from yesterday for this one, as you might have read. I baked my first ever cake on a Jan. 6th, then many years later, my daughter was born on a Jan. 6th. So there were lots of baked birthday cakes on that date over the years. It must have been serendipity for that to happen. 🙂

Today, though, all I can think of for the word, is the move by the same title, “Serendipity”. It’s one of my favorite movies, and stars John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale in this romantic comedy.
