Today we have Jim asking for songs that mention an insect or bug. I know of quite a few of them, so it was no trouble going to one of my very favorite songs by a wonderful singer.

I’ve had the pleasure of attending 3 concerts of the lovely Jana Stanfield. She hails from a small NM town not far from here, and every so often schedules a musical performance here. The venues are usually small, and friendly. The ones I saw were at a church, a swimming pool outdoor area, and a private ranch/restaurant. In fact, at the restaurant, it was a BBQ supper, and Ms Stanfield sat at our table, to chat.
She describes her songs/music as “Heavy Mental”, as she always has a positive message to deliver, with humor. She is booked as a keynote speaker all around the world, where she is also an advocate for humanitarian and peace endeavors. If you ever get a chance to attend one of her concerts, you won’t be disappointed.

This is a pretty blue & black butterfly with his wings wide open. He’s sitting on a broad green leaf.
My daughter took this photo when they went to a butterfly exhibit here in town awhile back.

This is a beautiful song that speaks to this idea of loving yourself, even when things in your life change – like the caterpillar who changes into a beautiful butterfly.

“Butterfly”, by Jana Stanfield, is on her 1994 album, “The Trick Is To Enjoy The Ride”. It was written by Jana Stanfield and Joyce Johnson Rouse, and is on the Relatively Famous Records label.

Sitting alone on a hillside, confused about what to do
My choices where all complicated, it was time to think things through
Spotted a striped caterpillar, stretching her face to the sky
Dragging her cumbersome body an inch at a time
I was feeling the pain of slow progress, when a friend of hers fluttered by
I leaned close as the caterpillar spoke with a voice as soft as a sign
She said…
[Chorus]
Butterfly, please tell me again it’s gonna be alright
I can feel a change is coming
I can feel it in my skin
I can feel myself outgrowing
This life I’ve been living in
And I’m afraid, afraid of change
Butterfly, please tell me again I’m gonna be alright
I’m like my friend caterpillar, afraid of that dark cocoon
Wanting to hide in the tall grass, when change is coming soon
But all of the things we long for, are borne on the wings of change
And losses can lead us to blessings that we can’t explain
Butterflies remind us, there’s magic in every life
And we can become what we dream of, if fat furry worms can fly
So I say…
Repeat Chorus
And on the day of my last breath
I expect to see angels like butterflies over my head
And I’ll say…
Repeat Chorus
