Throwback Thursday – Formal Wear

For today’s prompt we are to remember back to any occasion we had to dress up in formal wear. Thanks, Lauren!

Throwback Thursday #53 – It’s A Formal Affair

The questions to think about:

I am proposing a different way to write to the prompt today. Because we all had very diverse upbringings, I am going to list several reasons why you might get dressed up. Please feel free to add any occasion you had to get dressed up.

What were your special clothes like? Did you get your hair done for the occasions? Was a mani-pedi part of the process? Were you instructed on how to behave? Did you have any input on the formal attire? Did you feel comfortable in your special outfit?

Please feel free to write about as many of the occasions you’d like to share. Pictures would be an awesome addition.

* A wedding – either as a member of the wedding party or as a guest
* A Baptism, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, or Some Other Religious Ceremony

My thoughts:

This probably be short, because over the years I’ve barely ever had occasion to get dressed up.

I do remember my sister and I would get a new outfit of dress, shoes, and maybe a hat for Easter. Can’t remember any of them except we didn’t go anywhere except to my grand-ma’s house to have lunch and hunt Easter eggs.

We got new clothes for school, but they weren’t formal. I did go to one prom where I had a pretty blue dress, and got my hair done at a beauty shop. I hated how it turned out.

When I was a kid we didn’t go to formal dinner parties. As an adult I did have to get dressed up a couple of times for some kind of banquets the Army was having. The Mr. had to dress in his best uniform, too. I got mine at a thrift store.

For my wedding, my mom made my dress. It was just a straight, short shift type, with sheer long sleeves. For my daughter’s weddings I got another dressy dress at a thrift store, and wore it to both weddings.

That’s about all I had occasion to dress up, and I was not at all comfortable in any of them. I’m not a dress up kind of person.

1. Think about your first haircut. We’re you the kid that cut your own hair? Did you go to a salon or did your parents cut your hair? Did your parents save a lock of your hair?

In the baby book my mom wrote things in about me, I read that I got my first home permanent for my hair at 2 years old. Every year I’d get one. They were named Toni I think. All my hair cutting and permanents were done at home. And … I hated every single one of them from age 2 to when I was in Jr. High school. I wanted long straight hair.

2. How about shaving? Fathers often teach their sons to shave. Most girls I know, decided for themselves when to shave their legs and their underarms. Some cultures do not shave at all.

I think I was finally permitted to shave my legs when I was a teenager.

3. Did you alter your clothes? Cut jeans into cut-offs? Cut the sleeves off t-shirts? Wear graphic tees? Tie-dyes? Sew patches on your jeans?

This is later on when I could pick my own clothes, more or less when I was a teen. Yes, I’d cut my clothes like the hems of my jeans and make them fringed. I sewed a lot of my own clothes from patterns and fabric, too. I embroidered my blue work type shirts with pictures of my dogs, names, flowers, etc. and the same with my jeans. Plus I’d sew fun patches on jeans and shirts. I made tie-dyed t-shirts, and made and wore hand beaded necklaces and tied my hair with leather strips, and made my own moccasins to wear.

4. Was there a time you remember challenging the authority in your household. Do you remember the first time you found your voice?

I don’t remember anything like that really, except I complained about having to wear socks and shoes.

5. What about piercings? Girls getting their ears pierced was a rite of passage for girls. Then boys started getting one ear pierced. As time passed, piercings became more mainstream and accepted.

Yes, I got my ears pierced when I was a teen, the old fashioned way. A lady who we knew had a beauty shop, so my friend and I went to her. She used an ice cube and a regular needle. Worked fine and didn’t hurt.

6. Did you walk on the wild side? Smoking? Drinking? Did your parents know?

No I didn’t do anything like that when I was young. I did both after I got married.

7. What about tattoos? Did you get a tattoo while still living at home? Did your parents approve?

I only got my three tattoos in the last ten years or so.

8. What about language? Was swearing allowed in your family? Did you use the same language around your friends as you did at home with your family?

We weren’t a swearing kind of family at all. Very, very seldom I might have heard a damn, but nothing else, so I didn’t either. I still don’t much, especially out loud. To myself or by myself I sure do.

9. Think back to high school. Girls, did you iron your hair? Did you color your hair? (using Sun-in counts!) Guys, did you grow a beard or moustache? Did you grow your hair long? Feel free to share a photo of yourself back in the day.

I finally got to grow my hair long and not have it short and with a permanent. yay! I grew it long, I already have straight hair, but I ironed it anyway, and put hair dye on every so often, sometimes black, sometimes red, sometimes frosted.

10. Many people think our authentic self is the person we were as young children. Are you still inherently the same person you were as a child or have you changed your personality and demeanor along the way?

I’m pretty much the same as I was back then in basically every way.

Throwback Thursday #51 – Learning New Skills

1. When did you learn to ride a bike? Were you self-taught or did someone teach you? Any major injuries on the way? Did you master the skill? Do you still ride? If applicable, did you teach your kids?

I can’t remember actually learning to ride a bike, but I remember having training wheels on for a time. Eventually they were removed and I was riding. I do remember my first bike (I think), and for some reason it was a boy’s bike. Then I got a girl’s bike that was way too big. I tried riding it around in the kitchen, but that didn’t work. Then I got another one which was a better fit. I only remember one injury when I fell off, and I cut my knee. I still have the scar.

2. Did you learn to play a musical instrument? At what age? Who taught you? How often did you practice?   Were you in band at school? How good were you? Do you still play? If applicable, did you encourage your kids to play?

I think I tried to play the plastic recorder horn, but no lessons. In 6th grade I got a violin and we did have lessons at school. I took orchestra classes from then on through high school. I played in concerts, and also competitions. I still have my violin, and can still play it. Every once in awhile I do take it out of the case. Both my girls play band instruments, and were in school music classes. Plus later on they learned to play guitar on their own.

3. Did you sing in a choir in church or at school? At what age? How often did you practice? Did you enjoy it? How good were you? Do you still sing with others?

I was never in choir at school or anywhere else. I can’t carry a tune for anything – it’s bad. But I sing around the house on occasion along with songs on the radio.

4. Did you have formal instructions on speaking a second language? Were you fortunate enough to be raised in a house with two or more languages? Did you learn a second language in school? Are you fluent in more than one language?

I took French classes at school for a couple of years, and can remember a few words. I know a bit of Spanish, just by hearing it a lot where we live. I picked up a few words and phrases in Germany and Japan, too. I remember some of that.

5. Did you to play on a sports team or learn martial arts? At what age did you start? Did a parent become a coach? Did you practice at home? Do you still play sports? If applicable, did you encourage your children to play on a team?

I don’t do sports. I never liked sports. I failed in PE class. My girls tried a couple of sports I think, like gymnastics, soccer, or something for a little while. They weren’t too into them much. My oldest did like and become a cheerleader, which is actually a very demanding sport. She did this from kindergarten, through elementary, junior and senior high school and was very good at it.

6. Did you ever take dance, tap, ballet, baton, cheerleading, etc. lessons? When did you start? How long did you take lessons? Did you practice on your own in addition to the lessons? How skilled did you become? Did you encourage your children to do the same?

The only out of school lessons I took along these lines was baton twirling. I liked it and can still do a little of it. I just took it for fun when I was a kid. My girls both did the same with baton, also dance, tap, and ballet for a little while.

7. Did you learn to roller skate or ice skate? Did someone teach you or did you take lessons? At what age did you learn? Did you become skilled  quickly? Can you still skate? Did you teach your children.

I first used those clamp on our shoes type roller skates with a key to tighten them. I imagine I just skated around in the kitchen, or out in the street, as we didn’t have sidewalks. Later I got my own shoe skates and go to the roller rink every Friday with my friends. I was pretty good, and had lots of fun. Both my girls did the same, and they liked it a lot, too. They did have a regular Saturday morning skating class they went to.

*** Here’s me on my first bike (a boy’s!) when I was 7. The bike was okay but embarrassing because it was a boy’s and also I hated those ugly shoes I had to wear.

Throwback Thursday #48 – That Was Then And This Is Now

Today’s prompt thought is to think back on how things are different now from what they were like when we were young. Thanks, Lauren! 🙂

1) When you were a kid, did you like your name? Would you have changed it if you could? Do you like it now?

I guess I liked my name okay. I wasn’t named after anyone. My parents never said why they chose my name, either. Guess they just liked it. I did try a few variations which didn’t last more than a day or two, though. Barbie just didn’t suit me at all – haha! 🙂

2) As a kid, what always brought a smile to your face? What about now, as an adult? (family-friendly please)

A smile to my face as a kid – books, dogs, horses, and candy probably. Now, I still love books, can’t eat sugary candy, and we don’t have any pets.

3) What was the most important lesson your parents taught you? Did you pass that lesson down to your family?

Maybe to try and get along with everyone. I still try to do this. I think my kids learned this too, because as a military family we moved around a lot. They had to be able to get along with all kinds of people.

4) Are there talents you started as a child that you still have? If so, what are they?

I always thought I was talented in writing as a kid, and did a whole lot of it. I still do. I did a lot of drawing and painting as a kid, and though I haven’t done this in awhile, I know I can, as I do from time to time.

5) Is there something you regret not doing or starting when you were young? What was it?

Can’t really think of anything.

6) Did you have more close friends as a kid or as an adult? Any idea why?

I had quite a few friends in the neighborhood and school when I was young. Now, not but a couple I call friends, though one lives in another city. It’s not like we get together or anything much. I still have my best friend back then as a best friend now, but she lives in another city, too. We keep in touch.

7) Where did you go to think as a kid? Where do you go now?

No place special but probably my bedroom. Now I can use our whole house to think of things.

8) What would be the name of the chapter of your life from 10 – 18? What would the name be the name of the chapter of your life currently?

Good Times (back then) … Same ‘ol Same ‘ol (now). What happened to the middle years? That would be Mixed Tape of Living.

9) What wonderful thing happened in your adult life that your child self could never have imagined?

I have no idea. I had a great imagination back then, so I probably imagined pretty much of everything that has happened now, plus a lot more.

10) Would your child self like your adult self? Why or why not?

Yes, I probably would. I feel like most of the time I’m still a bumbling kid. I like to play games and can talk to kids very well, even now.

Throwback Thursday – #40 – Birthday Blasts

I don’t remember it, but I was actually born on Thanksgiving day that year! Every so often it falls again on the holiday! yay! 🙂

What’s your earliest birthday memory?

When I turned 9, I think

2) What was your favorite birthday and why?

The same, my 9th. It was a total surprise to me with the party.

3) What’s the best birthday present you have ever received?

Hard to remember a favorite gift, though I know I appreciate and liked them all.

4) Did you ever get money as a birthday gift?

Yes, most of the time I’d get money as a gift, along with gifts.

5) What did you like to do on your birthday as a kid? What do you like to do now?

We always had a cake with candles, and we’d play some kid’s games. Now, we don’t do anything, unless my daughter takes us out for dinner sometimes.

6) Did you have birthday parties with friends or family parties?

Every year our family would get together for everyone’s birthday, including mine. There was always cake. Sometimes I’d have a kid’s party on one day, and then the family get together on the weekend.

7) Did you get to pick the food for your birthday? Did you prefer to eat a home cooked meal or to eat out at a restaurant on your birthday?

I don’t remember any special home food for birthdays, except cake. Later on we’d go out for dinner when we were grown ups.

8) Did your family have any fun birthday traditions? Did you continue those traditions with your own kids?

Just the usual family get together for each person’s birthday … and cake! With my kids we’d have the just us cake & presents, then they’d get to invite friends over for the kid’s party, or we’d go to a place like miniature golf, or some other event place.

9) Did you ever get to take the day off school on your birthday? As an adult did/do you take the day off?

No, I don’t think we’d get to take the day off school or work.

10) Have you ever had a surprise birthday party? Was it a real surprise, or did you know it was coming?

Yes, that one when I was 9. There’s even a home movie of the fun. What happened was my grandma took me to her house for lunch, then when she took me home, all my friends were there shouting Surprise! I was actually surprised. We had fun playing games, and I won the prize for blowing the biggest bubble gum bubble contest.

Bonus Question:
If you had a million dollars to spend only on your next birthday, what would you do?

I’d go crazy on a spending spree first. Then, I’d give my daughters some, then pay off bills, and then save some for later.

***Here’s a fun remembrance of a birthday party not that many years ago. Just our family around the kitchen table. My daughter stacked up chocolate glazed donuts into a tall cake like tower, with candles. I leaned forward to blow them out and my long hair caught fire! I heard sizzling and people were yelling, then I realized what was happening. We got the fire put out, and it wasn’t all that bad, just a few singed pieces. haha 🙂

Throwback Thursday – #38 Visits to Doctors and/or Dentists

1) Where doctor/dentist appointments a regular part of your childhood? …

Yes, I was in and out of the doctor and dentist offices all the time.

2) Did you go for well-checks or just when you were ill or in pain? …

Both when I needed to go, and also for regular checkups, and emergencies.

3) Were you frightened by the medical professionals? If so, were there specific reasons?

No, I don’t remember being scared to go see either doctors or dentists.

4) Were your parents afraid of medical professionals? …

Not that I know of.

5) Was waiting in the exam room stressful to you? …

No, not that I remember.

6) Did your early visits result in your being afraid of needles? …

No, I never was afraid of needles, and am not now, either.

7) Does the sight of your own blood bother you? …

No, seeing my blood doesn’t bother me. I guess it would if it was a whole lot at a time.

8) Did you ever have the need to go to an emergency room? …

Yes, many times.

9) Did your early experiences impact your current attitudes about medical care? …

No, I’ll go now if I need to.

Now, for the nitty gritty. I’ve told some of these stories before.

I was very little when I fell and cut a big slash right by my right eye. Had to have a lot of stitches. A few days later (while on a trip out of town) I fell again in a parking lot, and had to find emergency care for a re-do of all the stitches which had broken apart.

A little older I had an operation to get tonsils out. Age 5 I think.

Later on I was outside crawling around in the dirt chasing our ducks in the back yard. My foot scraped on a piece of broken glass, which cut my artery. Blood was spurting out with each heartbeat. Was rushed to ER, got more stitches.

In between all these, I had sore throats, bladder infections, and other ailments which had me in the doctor’s office all the time. Plus the childhood diseases before there were vaccinations for them, like mumps, measles, and chicken pox.

I did get a small pox vaccination shot, and later on the polio vaccine (in a sugar cube).

I also had to go to the podiatrist for foot problems. Every so often I had my feet x-rayed and had to have special clunky shoes to wear. I hated them.

For the dentist visits, I fell and broke a permanent tooth and had to get a silver cap on it (right in front) I had that on for many years. Also had my two front teeth knocked out while playing.

Lots more stuff after I was grown up, but won’t go any farther than this above part.

Yep, I was a mess! haha 🙂

This week Maggie asks us some questions about our school days concerning things we did as sports and extra curricular activities. Thanks, Maggie! 🙂

Questions:

  1. Did you belong to any clubs?
  2. Did you stay after school for activities? If so, how did you get home?
  3. We’re you involved in sports? If so, which ones? Were you good at them, mediocre, or at least trying?
  4. What was your favorite school related sports or physical activity?
  5. Did you hold any leadership roles in school?
  6. Did you play football, basketball, or some other sport or were you a cheerleader?
  7. Did you travel after school, on weekends, or in the summer for any activities?  Where did you go?
  8. Did you receive letters, awards, or certificates for your involvement?
  9. Did you belong to any organizations that were not associated or sponsored by your school?
  10. Were you on any school committees such as yearbook, prom committee, etc.?

Answers:

1. I was in a few clubs while in school = Library Club (Parliamentarian), French Club (President)

2. I don’t remember staying after school for activities. I rode the bus to and from school, until I got my own car.

3. I wasn’t involved in sports, except what we had to do in P. E. class. I avoided as much as I could, because I didn’t like any of them, and was no good at playing them.

4. None!

5. Just those mentioned in question # 1.

6. Nope, nope, nope!

7. Funny that I hated sports, but in high school our football team went out of town to play for the state championship in a city several hours away. The school organized busses to take students to the game, and all my friends and I went to see the game. And our team won!

8. No, I didn’t win anything for sports, but won a scholarship, and also was inducted into the National Honor Society. Also received certificates for competing in violin competitions.

9. I did join in the Bluebirds (like the Brownies) when young, then was in Girl Scouts for awhile.

10. I was on the prom committee where we were in charge of theme, decorations, etc. I was on the Senior Carnival committee with the same jobs such as theme and decorations. Those were lots of fun.

Another strange deal was I was on the yearbook committee for a couple of years. We did the whole thing, from start to finish, each one of us having at least one special job. Don’t laugh, but I was the Sports Editor, and had to get pictures, write copy, do layout for the book, crop photos, the whole 9 yards (hah) involved with putting out a yearbook. And … I hated sports! But I did a good job with the yearbook. 🙂

Lauren has posed some questions about what would happen when we were sick or hurt as a kid. Thanks, Lauren!

How did your family take care of minor injuries?Did you have home remedies you used?
What was the typical way to care for a cold or flu at your house?
Were you pampered when you were sick/hurt or told to buck up and deal with it?
When you got sick as a kid did you stay home, or did you have to go to school?
Did a parent stay home with you, or did you fend for yourself?
Was a doctor visited when you had a minor injury or illness?
Did you ever have a major illness or injury growing up? How did it impact your life?

I don’t remember a whole lot of what happened way back then. I’m sure we were taken care of, probably got to stay at home when we were sick, too.

I do remember having to to to the doctor and getting penicillin shots a lot. We didn’t have doctors that came to the house. I must have been sick from something or other to have to go so much. I can even remember the exam room. It was at the pediatrician’s office. There was a huge drawn & in color picture of Alice in Wonderland hanging on the wall, and we almost always got a little airplane made of those throat sticks.

Finally, at age 5 I had my tonsils out, which I do remember what happened a little bit. I didn’t want another shot, so the nurse had to kind of chase me as I crawled around on the bed. Then they put a mask over my face to give me the knock out medicine, which was ether, and told to count backwards. I can still almost remember how awful that stuff smelled.

Before that, when I was about 2 years old, I fell off a kitchen chair (I was always climbing up to the cabinets) and fell off onto one of those old kind of metal coffee cans with sharp edges. I cut my face really bad right next to my right eye. A trip to the ER, and I had several stitches. I still have the scar. But … while the stitches were still in, we made a trip out of town for my dad to take the test for master plumber in Austin.

We got out to eat at a restaurant, and I remember mom telling me not to run on the gravel parking lot. Well, of course I did run, fall down, and broke all the stitches out, and had to go to another doctor to get more stitches (in an unfamiliar town).

Next up was more stitches, when I was maybe 6? I was crawling around barefoot chasing after our ducks, when the top of my foot got cut by some glass. It severed an artery. Blood was spurting high with every heartbeat. I hopped around until they could catch me, and rush to the ER. Guess I could have died from that, but thankfully I didn’t. Still have that scar, too.

Otherwise just the usual bumps and scrapes kids get. Most often doctored at home with mercurochrome, the little bottle of red liquid antiseptic. We called it Monkey Blood. We’d even have our sore throats ‘painted’ with the stuff, by mom or grandma taking a long broomstick straw with a cotton bit wrapped on the end (no long Q tips back then I guess), and soaked in the red ‘paint’ our throat would be coated with the stuff.

Anyway, that’s all for now.

This week Maggie poses some questions about chores and allowances when we were a kid, and even later on. Thanks, Maggie! 🙂

Here are a few things to remember back on:

Did you have chores you were responsible for? At what age did that begin?

Were you required to make your bed and keep your room tidy? Did you have the responsibility for those chores for siblings or others in the house? Were chores evenly distributed?

Were you asked to take out the trash, mow the lawn, or do the dishes? How about cooking?

Were you given an allowance? If so, at what age and how much?

Were there repercussions if you did not do your chores?

How did you establish chores once you had a home of your own?

I don’t know what age I was able to do any chores, but I do remember getting to wash the dishes. I really liked doing that. I still like doing that – by hand. We’ve had a dishwasher before, but not in quite a few years, and we didn’t have one when I was growing up. I would even volunteer to do dishes at my grandma’s and granny’s house if we’d had a meal over there. It’s fun to do someone else’s dishes because they were different from ours.

My sister and I would help with the kitchen floor. Not a totally every time deal, but quite often. The floor was linoleum, and mom wanted it waxed. The Johnson’s paste wax smelled good. We’d get rags and smear it all over the floor, then other rags and buff it off. Later on we had an electric waxing/buffing machine to use. That was fun, too.  Now however, I hate doing floors of any kind.

My sister and I never got an allowance as such. We were lucky to have plenty of what we needed, and would get treats from time to time. We did get a dollar for every A on our report cards though.

Early on my cousin and I would make crafty things to sell. We’d go to grandma’s and all the neighbors with our stuff and they’d buy from us. We’d make braided yarn with little pouches for cinnamon spice and cinnamon sticks tied on with ribbon. We’d also make soap decorated with ribbon and little artificial flowers to hang in the bathroom. We did quite well with both of these. I think we charged 75 cents for both of these.

A little later on I would take in ironing to do for others. I loved to iron! I had quite a few customers who’d bring their clothes to me by the dozen. I was still in elementary school when I did this. I also continued to do this for many years, up until only a few years ago here.

I think we probably did whatever we wanted to with our own bedrooms. We didn’t get nagged much to keep it tidy. But later on as a teen I kept it fairly neat.

We basically kept on this same way when our girls were growing up.

That’s about all I can think on it for now. 🙂

This week Lauren asks us about our cooking skills, and how we learned to cook, and what all we’ve cooked. Also if we’ve had any cooking disasters. Thanks so much, Lauren! 🙂

One of the best memories I have of learning to cook was when I made a cake. Here’s what I wrote in my diary when I was 10 years old, and my notes about it which I’ve blogged about before.

1/6/61 – I went to school and when I got hom (home) after a while we went bowlling (bowling). I baked my first cake and made a tea party with P (sister)

Now that is an interesting fact/co-incident. I remember baking that cake, a very simple one from a kid’s cook-book. It turned out really good. Then, many years later my own daughter was born… on a January 6th. So…for many years I baked a cake for her birthday…each January 6th!

After that I probably made that cake other times along with other recipes in that little book.

In Jr. High school I took Home Economics where we did cooking and sewing. That was fun.

Before I got married, I didn’t really know much about cooking, so I made a point to watch how my mom cooked things so I could do it too. I still cook food the same way as back then. Why change it if it works, right!

I’m not really an experimental kind of cook. I know how to do all these I learned so I don’t need a recipe for any of them. If I do try something new, I will follow a set recipe. I do follow the recipes when I made cookies, though. Cookies are a favorite of mine to make, especially at Christmas, with the cut out and decorated ones.

My worst disaster in the kitchen was the exploding enchiladas incident. A huge mess! The whole glass dish full of home made enchiladas exploded, throwing hot food and glass everywhere! I wrote a blog post about it here

A few years ago I wanted to learn how to make decorated cakes, so took a class at the craft store. That was fun, and I learned a lot. Even if we messed up, we got to eat our mistakes! haha . I made a lot of the cakes using all the piping tips. It was just for fun, and we enjoyed them.
