Throwback Thursday – Then & Now

Throwback Thursday #48 – That Was Then And This Is Now

***

Today’s prompt thought is to think back on how things are different now from what they were like when we were young. Thanks, Lauren! 🙂

***

1) When you were a kid, did you like your name? Would you have changed it if you could? Do you like it now?

I guess I liked my name okay. I wasn’t named after anyone. My parents never said why they chose my name, either. Guess they just liked it. I did try a few variations which didn’t last more than a day or two, though. Barbie just didn’t suit me at all – haha! 🙂

2) As a kid, what always brought a smile to your face? What about now, as an adult? (family-friendly please)

A smile to my face as a kid – books, dogs, horses, and candy probably. Now, I still love books, can’t eat sugary candy, and we don’t have any pets.

3) What was the most important lesson your parents taught you? Did you pass that lesson down to your family?

Maybe to try and get along with everyone. I still try to do this. I think my kids learned this too, because as a military family we moved around a lot. They had to be able to get along with all kinds of people.

4) Are there talents you started as a child that you still have? If so, what are they?

I always thought I was talented in writing as a kid, and did a whole lot of it. I still do. I did a lot of drawing and painting as a kid, and though I haven’t done this in awhile, I know I can, as I do from time to time.

5) Is there something you regret not doing or starting when you were young? What was it?

Can’t really think of anything.

6) Did you have more close friends as a kid or as an adult? Any idea why?

I had quite a few friends in the neighborhood and school when I was young. Now, not but a couple I call friends, though one lives in another city. It’s not like we get together or anything much. I still have my best friend back then as a best friend now, but she lives in another city, too. We keep in touch.

7) Where did you go to think as a kid? Where do you go now?

No place special but probably my bedroom. Now I can use our whole house to think of things.

8) What would be the name of the chapter of your life from 10 – 18? What would the name be the name of the chapter of your life currently?

Good Times (back then) … Same ‘ol Same ‘ol (now). What happened to the middle years? That would be Mixed Tape of Living.

9) What wonderful thing happened in your adult life that your child self could never have imagined?

I have no idea. I had a great imagination back then, so I probably imagined pretty much of everything that has happened now, plus a lot more.

10) Would your child self like your adult self? Why or why not?

Yes, I probably would. I feel like most of the time I’m still a bumbling kid. I like to play games and can talk to kids very well, even now.

Throwback Thursday #47 – Hanging Out

This week’s questions come from Lauren. It’s all about the fun places we used to hang out with our friends. Thanks, Lauren! 🙂

***

My neighborhood when I was a kid was fairly small. There were 5 roads of housing, probably less than a mile long, a small mom & pop grocery, a drugstore, a beauty shop, a gas station, a church, an elementary school, and a hamburger stand. It was pretty isolated way out from the city proper, in between cotton fields just south of the airport. There wasn’t much to do unless you had a car or someone to take you somewhere. Besides my family, my grand-ma, my two different aunts and cousins lived out there, too. Everyone in the neighborhood pretty much knew everyone else and us kids were watched after by everyone.

Did you spend more time hanging out at friend’s houses or away from the eyes and ears of parents?

It was about even. Sometimes I was at friend’s houses and sometimes they were at mine. But mostly we just hung out walking or biking around the neighborhood all day.

If you stayed home, how did you spend your time?

I read a lot of books, wrote a lot of stories and plays, and played with Barbie dolls, and paper dolls. Also played with my dog.

Did you have a favorite eatery?

With family, every Friday evening a big group of us would go to a local barbeque place called Underwoods. They had the best food ever. We were all disappointed when the place closed down many years later.

With friends, early on we didn’t have driver’s licenses so we didn’t go to restaurants.

But, my best friends mom worked at an old fashioned drug store that was at the end of our street. It was dim, and cooled with overhead fans, and had booths and stools to sit on, and old timey soda jerk kind of things. We’d go there a lot and hang out and read comic books.

Later with going on dates, it would be the Dairy Queen most times.

Did you go to the mall with friends?

No, we didn’t have a mall in our town until I was already grown and married.

Did choose to socialize at bowling alleys, arcades, or roller rinks?

The family (and my cousins) would go bowling every weekend. My friends and I would go roller skating, too. There was a rivalry between which roller rink was the best out of the two we had. Of course ours was best!

Did you go miniature golfing or do another outside activity?

I went miniature golfing a few times, mostly with my now husband. We’d also go on picnics at the lake.

The family went on picnics at the park quite often, and enjoy the rides at the amusement park.

Fun – my grand-ma worked at the amusement park, so we got free rides!

Did you hang around after school killing time? What did you do?

Nope, never stayed at school after the school day was over.

Did your parents typically know where you were?

Well, they knew I was somewhere in the neighborhood. Just as long as I was home for supper it was fine.

Did you prefer to “hang” with friends or family members?

Both, I liked doing things with family and friends.

Was it “cool” to be seen hanging out at any particular place?

Not that I know of.

Was there a place you wanted to hang out, but weren’t allowed to?

I don’t think so. There wasn’t anything much to do unless our parents drove us there.

This week Maggie asks us about anything we kept hidden, or our hiding places. Thanks, Maggie! 🙂

Throwback Thursday #46 – Secrets, Hiding Places and Niches

***

Here are some questions to get started:

  1. Did you keep a diary or a journal? If so, where did you keep it?
  2. Did you have treasures or money you hid from siblings or parents?
  3. Did you have a need to hide things your parents would not approve of, like cigarettes, etc.?
  4. Thinking back, describe your most creative hiding place.
  5. Did you have a tin box or safe or a diary with a lock?
  6. What about yourself? Did you ever have a favorite get away spot or hiding place?
  7. If you did not feel the need to hide away, where did you go for a little alone time?
  8. If you had siblings, did they hide things from you? If so, what types of things?
  9. Now that you are an adult, do you still have little niches where you hide things away, like mad money, treasured letters, etc?
  10. When you feel the need to be alone, to where do you retreat?

***

My answers:

1. Yes, I had several diaries when I was young. I don’t know what ever happened to them, except one. I’ve done a whole blog series with all the days and entries of what I wrote in that one (I was 9 years old when I wrote stuff in there). Journals, I’ve tried off and on to keep, but I start out okay, then forget and start another one. They are around here somewhere.

2. I had a little treasure box I kept a few things in. Nothing was very important, just junk I liked to look at I guess. Nobody wanted to find and look at any of it, so I had no reason to hide it.

3. I didn’t hide much of anything, but … I did kind of hide some books and magazines I had a feeling my mom wouldn’t approve of. Nothing really bad … mags were like True Romance, probably fiction stories ? and the book was ‘Valley of the Dolls’. Funny thing though, I passed on these to my Grand-ma!!! She liked them, too. She said she wouldn’t tell my mom. I have no idea if she did or not. haha

4. I don’t think I had any specific hiding places. Could just have been in my closet.

5. I just had that little treasure box (it was pink vinyl) and my diary had a lock, but I never used it.

6. I don’t remember myself hiding out anywhere. I would often climb way up in a tree in the back yard and front yard. I’d take a book and an apple and my book. I wasn’t hiding though. People knew I was up there. Sometimes a friend or cousin would join me.

7. I was pretty much fine just in my bedroom. No one bothered me and I didn’t close the door.

8. I have one sister, and if she hid things I didn’t know about it.

9. I just stick things in my closet, or my filing cabinet. I put most of my ironing money in an envelope in the filing cabinet, but everyone knew it was there. I’d save up for buying something.

10. It’s just me and the Mr. here, so we’re alone all the time, doing our own thing during the day.

Throwback Thursday #45 – Nighttime Rituals

***

Click to View Full Clipart Image

This week’s prompt is: Nighttime Rituals

  1. Did you share a room with a sibling, or did you have a room of your own?
  2. Did you resist going to bed or did you go willingly?
  3. Did someone put you to bed, tuck you in, or read you a bedtime story?
  4. Was there a religious component, like prayers, to your nighttime routine?
  5. Did you go to sleep immediately, or lie awake?
  6. Did you journal, read a book, talk on the phone or with your siblings, or watch television when you were supposed to be sleeping?
  7. Did you ever sleepwalk?
  8. Did you remember having dreams? If you dreamed, did you ever have bad dreams? Do you remember any dreams specifically?
  9. Were you afraid of the dark? Did you sleep with a nightlight or sneak into your sibling’s or parent’s room at night because you were afraid?
  10. Did you have or attend sleepovers or slumber parties? Feel free to elaborate.

My answers:

1. I had a bedroom of my own, and my sister had her own.

2. I don’t remember ever fussing about going to bed. As far as I can remember we didn’t have a set bedtime.

3. No, well I can’t remember when I was very little, but I don’t remember any of that from any time.

4. Not really as a formal thing. I did say a little prayer to myself every night, though. (Now I lay me down to sleep … ) that one.

5. I mostly stayed awake as long as I could after going to bed.

6. I did not read after lights out (until way later on). I did spend time thinking up stories to write for the next day. I also had a transistor radio I’d listen to. It’s amazing what far away stations you can hear way late at night.

7. No, I never sleep walked.

8. I had all kinds of dreams, some scary, some funny. I’d wake myself up either crying or laughing out loud. I most times would write down all I could remember. I have many ‘dream’ journals I’ve kept, or just pieces of paper I’d write them on the next day. I’ve had repeating dreams a lot of times, too.

9. I’ve never been afraid of the dark. I love nighttime! I’d never go running afraid into my parents or sister’s bedroom. What I would do is sneak out into the darkness! 🙂 🙂 That was the most fun. I’d mostly be looking at the stars and hoping to see a UFO!

10. I went to friend’s slumber parties a few times. I had one at my house when I was in 6th grade, and there were a bunch of us girls. We stayed up all night. At one point a group of boys came by – but they didn’t stay long.  hee hee! Next morning we all went down into the cellar and ate breakfast. We thought it was fun for some reason. My slumber party was talked about for months after that, as one of the best.

Throwback Thursday #44 Fireworks Celebrations

***

Today’s questions from Lauren asks us to remember our experiences with fireworks. Thanks, Lauren! 🙂

***

1) What are your earliest memories of watching fireworks?  … I don’t remember any fireworks when I was a kid, but after getting married we did see some on special occasions.

2) Were you more afraid or excited at the time? … Fireworks are so pretty, I was excited to see & hear them.

3) What occasions were celebrated with watching fireworks? … 4th of July and New Year’s Eve

4) Did you travel to fireworks shows, or did your family have their own, safe and sane explosives? … None when I was a kid. Later the Mr. and I never traveled to see any, as they were popped in the neighborhood, or in the same town in a city demonstration.

5) Did you ever light off illegal fireworks? … No, I’ve never lit a firework.

6) Did you typically have a family celebration before the nighttime display? What did it include? … We never had fireworks when I was a kid, but we did have a 4th of July cook out or something usually.

7) As you grew older, did your feelings about fireworks change? … No, I still like seeing them, but don’t want to be close to them.

8) Now the thinker: Many places are restricting fireworks now because of the trauma it can cause to pets, young children, and sensitive adults. How do you feel about restricting fireworks? … I hate that pets and kids and some adults are terrified of the loud bangs. And it can go on for hours, and sometimes several nights in a row. I know our city has a no fireworks law, but nobody pays attention to it, so it happens every year in neighborhoods all over. I don’t know what should be done. The city has a legal show at a large park that people can go to, but that doesn’t stop the illegal fireworks going off.

***

Now, there are 4 times I remember well about fireworks.

1. 4th of July – A legal fireworks display that was fairly close to my aunt’s house one year. We family gathered for a cookout in her back yard to visit and watch the display. It was great! She lives kind of out in the country, so it was legal to have personal fireworks, and there was a stand to buy them at the end of her road. Something happened and the whole stand caught fire. Firetrucks came, there was fire & smoke everywhere, and roads were blocked for hours. It took us forever to finally go home.

2. New Year’s Eve – Germany – We were at a party with friends, and there were so many people popping fireworks in the area that it sounded like a war was going on. Very exciting!

3. Bon-Odori Festival – Japan – This was a huge festival with food and display booths, and a wonderful fireworks display at night. (Bon-Odori is actually to celebrate the ancestors). My husbands Army unit had a booth there, too.

4. July 4th – Ft. Hood TX Army base – A huge celebration with night time fireworks, and all through the day activities. There was a large stage where musicians played – some local bands, and some famous recording artists. This was just down the street from our house, so we went for awhile.

Throwback Thursday – Money

***

This week Lauren asks us about money. Thanks, Lauren!

https://lssattitudeofgratitude.wordpress.com/

This week’s prompt is: Your Relationship With Money

1) At what age do you remember handling your own money?

Probably when I was in grade school, around 9 or 10

2) Did you have a piggy bank to add coins to?

No I don’t remember that I did.

3) Did you get an allowance and/or get paid for doing chores?

No, my sister and I did not get an allowance.

4) How did you earn money for things you wanted?

I did ironing for people. Also, my cousin and I would make things to sell around the neighborhood.

5) Did you have jobs outside your house to earn money? What did you do?

Yes, I did ironing for people to make money.

6) Were you more of a spender or a saver as a kid?

I think I’d save some until I had enough to buy whatever I was interested in.

7) Were you aware of the financial situation your parents were raising you in?

Not really.

8) Did you understand the difference between needs and wants when it came to asking your parents for things?

Probably not when I was younger.

9) Did you ever “save up” for a special item that you wanted? What was it?

Yes, when I was in Jr. High school, I saved a lot of money. I had a special jar I glued a picture of what I wanted on it. What I wanted was an electric bass guitar. My girlfriends and I planned on starting a rock band. I finally had enough money to buy mine. It was wonderful, It was shiny. It was a deep red and black color. We never did get it started though. Years later I finally sold my bass to a neighbor who was already in a garage band, and so my guitar did reach the goal of playing in a band. Unfortunately I didn’t.

10) Did you have a savings account when you were a child?

No, I didn’t until after I was married.

11) Was there anything you routinely spent your own money on when growing up?

Records, books, writing paper & pens, coloring books, cute or pretty stationery, make-up, snacks. And, I still buy all this except for records these days.

Throwback Thursday – #40 – Birthday Blasts

***

I don’t remember it, but I was actually born on Thanksgiving day that year! Every so often it falls again on the holiday! yay! 🙂

What’s your earliest birthday memory?

When I turned 9, I think

2) What was your favorite birthday and why?

The same, my 9th. It was a total surprise to me with the party.

3) What’s the best birthday present you have ever received?

Hard to remember a favorite gift, though I know I appreciate and liked them all.

4) Did you ever get money as a birthday gift?

Yes, most of the time I’d get money as a gift, along with gifts.

5) What did you like to do on your birthday as a kid? What do you like to do now?

We always had a cake with candles, and we’d play some kid’s games. Now, we don’t do anything, unless my daughter takes us out for dinner sometimes.

6) Did you have birthday parties with friends or family parties?

Every year our family would get together for everyone’s birthday, including mine. There was always cake. Sometimes I’d have a kid’s party on one day, and then the family get together on the weekend.

7) Did you get to pick the food for your birthday? Did you prefer to eat a home cooked meal or to eat out at a restaurant on your birthday?

I don’t remember any special home food for birthdays, except cake. Later on we’d go out for dinner when we were grown ups.

8) Did your family have any fun birthday traditions? Did you continue those traditions with your own kids?

Just the usual family get together for each person’s birthday … and cake! With my kids we’d have the just us cake & presents, then they’d get to invite friends over for the kid’s party, or we’d go to a place like miniature golf, or some other event place.

9) Did you ever get to take the day off school on your birthday? As an adult did/do you take the day off?

No, I don’t think we’d get to take the day off school or work.

10) Have you ever had a surprise birthday party? Was it a real surprise, or did you know it was coming?

Yes, that one when I was 9. There’s even a home movie of the fun. What happened was my grandma took me to her house for lunch, then when she took me home, all my friends were there shouting Surprise! I was actually surprised. We had fun playing games, and I won the prize for blowing the biggest bubble gum bubble contest.

Bonus Question:
If you had a million dollars to spend only on your next birthday, what would you do?

I’d go crazy on a spending spree first. Then, I’d give my daughters some, then pay off bills, and then save some for later.

***Here’s a fun remembrance of a birthday party not that many years ago. Just our family around the kitchen table. My daughter stacked up chocolate glazed donuts into a tall cake like tower, with candles. I leaned forward to blow them out and my long hair caught fire! I heard sizzling and people were yelling, then I realized what was happening. We got the fire put out, and it wasn’t all that bad, just a few singed pieces. haha 🙂

Throwback Thursday #39 – Reading Culture and Books

***

The questions:

  1. Who were the readers in your family?
  2. Were there some people who did not like to read or could not read?
  3. Did your family subscribe to the newspaper?
  4. If you did get the paper, was your Sunday newspaper considered special? What part did you enjoy?
  5. Did your home have books strewn around? Hardbacks or paperbacks?
  6. Did you frequent the library at school?
  7. How about the local community library? Did you have a library card?
  8. What was the first book you remember reading?
  9. Did you have a collection of books (Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Happy Hollisters, etc?)
  10. Did you read comic books? If so, what titles?
  11. Did you end up a bookworm, a casual reader, or someone who read only when required?
  12. Is there a book from your childhood you would like to read again? If so, what book?
  13. What book or books have been extremely meaningful or influential in your life?
  14. BONUS QUESTION: What book(s) do you frequently gift to others? Why?

***

My answers:

1. In our family everyone was always reading something.

2. I never heard of anyone in our family that couldn’t read.

3. Yes, we had the local newspaper delivered every day.

4. The Sunday paper was bigger, and had the comics. I always liked those, and I probably read the headlines of the front page, and looked at some of the lifestyle section.

5. We did have books in the house, both hardback and paperback ones. We had an encyclopedia set, and a children’s set, too.

6. I always went to the school’s library in all grades. In Jr. High, I did work in the library, classifying, shelving, checking out books to people, putting dust covers on books, etc. Then in high school I did the same thing, and even held an office in the library club.

7. I had a children’s library card and couldn’t wait until I got the adult library card. I’ve always had one in every city we moved to, even overseas.

8. The first book I remember reading is “The Three Billy Goats Gruff”. I actually still have it.

9. I had a lot of books, maybe not a collection, but a lot. I would get the Trixie Beldon books. Earlier on we got a whole box of little Golden Books as a gift from a neighbor.

10. I read quite a few comic books. Not superheroes. Mostly Archie, Caspar the Friendly Ghost, Donald Duck, and those kinds.

11. I was a bookworm from the get go, and I still am.

12. Oh, I don’t know, maybe the Black Stallion series (I was obsessed with horses at the time)

13. I just read for pleasure, no great insights. I read all kinds, from non-fiction, fiction, horror, and everything in between. Some make me laugh, some make me cry, and some are just interesting.

14. I don’t gift books to other people. I might say to them what book I liked, then they can get it or not. People’s taste in books are so different, I couldn’t begin to know what they’d like. I have given gift cards though, so they can pick out what book they’d want.

This is my Three Billy Goats Gruff book I’ve had forever, and the first one I could read by myself. Then I passed it on to my cousin when he was little, then it was back to me so my girls could read it, too.

This week Lauren asks us some questions about our early doctor/dentist experiences. Thanks, Lauren

Throwback Thursday – #38 Visits to Doctors and/or Dentists

***

1) Where doctor/dentist appointments a regular part of your childhood? …

Yes, I was in and out of the doctor and dentist offices all the time.

2) Did you go for well-checks or just when you were ill or in pain? …

Both when I needed to go, and also for regular checkups, and emergencies.

3) Were you frightened by the medical professionals? If so, were there specific reasons?

No, I don’t remember being scared to go see either doctors or dentists.

4) Were your parents afraid of medical professionals? …

Not that I know of.

5) Was waiting in the exam room stressful to you? …

No, not that I remember.

6) Did your early visits result in your being afraid of needles? …

No, I never was afraid of needles, and am not now, either.

7) Does the sight of your own blood bother you? …

No, seeing my blood doesn’t bother me. I guess it would if it was a whole lot at a time.

8) Did you ever have the need to go to an emergency room? …

Yes, many times.

9) Did your early experiences impact your current attitudes about medical care? …

No, I’ll go now if I need to.

Now, for the nitty gritty. I’ve told some of these stories before.

I was very little when I fell and cut a big slash right by my right eye. Had to have a lot of stitches. A few days later (while on a trip out of town) I fell again in a parking lot, and had to find emergency care for a re-do of all the stitches which had broken apart.

A little older I had an operation to get tonsils out. Age 5 I think.

Later on I was outside crawling around in the dirt chasing our ducks in the back yard. My foot scraped on a piece of broken glass, which cut my artery. Blood was spurting out with each heartbeat. Was rushed to ER, got more stitches.

In between all these, I had sore throats, bladder infections, and other ailments which had me in the doctor’s office all the time. Plus the childhood diseases before there were vaccinations for them, like mumps, measles, and chicken pox.

I did get a small pox vaccination shot, and later on the polio vaccine (in a sugar cube).

I also had to go to the podiatrist for foot problems. Every so often I had my feet x-rayed and had to have special clunky shoes to wear. I hated them.

For the dentist visits, I fell and broke a permanent tooth and had to get a silver cap on it (right in front) I had that on for many years. Also had my two front teeth knocked out while playing.

Lots more stuff after I was grown up, but won’t go any farther than this above part.

Yep, I was a mess! haha 🙂

This week Lauren asks us some questions about going to the movies. Thanks, Lauren

Throwback Thursday #33 – Going to the Movies

***

We as a family went to the movies quite often when I was a kid. There were several drive-in movie places, and a lot of indoor theaters, too.

One of my first memories was being surprised at the last minute of going to the drive-in to see the original run of ‘101 Dalmations’. I’d been wanting to see it, and on the way my parents told me and my sister that we were going to see it. I was bouncing up and down in the back seat of the car I was so excited.

Other times our family and my aunt, uncle and cousins would all go in separate cars to a drive in to see the double feature. Before the show started all us kids would head for the little playground way up front under the screen. I remember seeing Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in ‘The Long Long Trailer’.

We’d also go to indoor theaters a lot. I remember seeing ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ one time, and also some horror shows other times.

Going to the movie without a parent came along later as a young teen. My first horror show (without parents) was when my older teen cousin took me and his sister (my age) to see ‘Gorgo’.

My best girlfriend and I had a deal where every single Christmas afternoon we’d dress in our new clothes and go to an afternoon movie. We did this for years. One year we both got white go-go boots and we wore those with our new fuzzy sweaters, and carried our new purses. haha!

Then came the dating years of going to the movies, either indoor or drive-in, with a boyfriend. My first date with my now husband was to a drive-in.. It was either this time or another time that his car broke down at the drive-in and we had to call my dad to come get us. Embarrassing!

One time we smuggled in a bottle of wine at an indoor theater, and watched ‘Planet of the Apes’. Interesting how that one turned out!

When we had kids, we’d take them to the movies a lot, too. When we were stationed on Army bases we’d get to go to the theaters on base. It was fairly cheap for tickets. What was different was before each showing of a movie, everyone in the theater was required to stand and sing the Star Spangled Banner.

We’ve been to movies off and on throughout the years, but not in a long time. I can’t eat popcorn any more, so it’s just not as fun to go.’

Oh, another little tidbit is that while taking driver’s education in school, we’d go to a drive-in movie lot to practice our driving. 🙂
