some of my many radios

I still love listening to the radio every day. I got my first little transistor radio when I was eleven years old, and I’ve had one ever since. Music has changed somewhat over the years, but some things stay the same. We have lots of ways to hear music now, but for me, I still like the old fashioned way a lot of the times.

From a post I wrote several years ago:

Do you still listen to the radio? Sometimes I wonder, because lots of people use their phones, or iPods, or computers to download a favorite song to listen to. I still use the radio, and take my chances on what song I’ll hear.

I’ve always had a love for actual radios. the small transistor radios, especially. I got my first one for my birthday, when I was eleven. I loved tuning in the stations with the little dial, to bring in my favorite stations. I’d even stay awake late at night, just to hear stations from far away, as reception is better at night.

Ever since then, I’ve enjoyed listening to all types of radios. The transistor, of course, and now I have and listen to my police scanner, on which I can hear calls to and from the dispatcher, fire department calls, ambulance calls, and airport notices. After awhile I was able to understand the call signals, the communication codes, and the phonetic alphabet.

Another type of radio I have, is the shortwave radio. On this one I can tune in to countries beyond the United States. One of my favorites to listen to is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, (ABC), early on Saturday mornings.

I do have walkie-talkies (a type of two-way radio), and am learning how to use them. Also, I have the hand crank, emergency radio, that doesn’t even need a battery!

So, as you can see, for me, radios are still a fun medium for me to listen to and enjoy.

Here is the phonetic alphabet. Can you find how to say your name? Mine is…Bravo, Alpha, Romeo, Bravo, Alpha, Romeo, Alpha!

A = Alpha                       N = November

B = Bravo                       O = Oscar

C = Charlie                     P = Papa

D = Delta                        Q = Quebec

E = Echo                         R = Romeo

F = Foxtrot                     S = Sierra

G = Golf                          T = Tango

H = Hotel                       U = Uniform

I = India                         V = Victor

J = Juliett                       W = Whiskey

K = Kilo                          X = Xray

L – Lima                        Y = Yankee

M = Mike                        Z = Zulu

“How Do You Like Me Now”, by Toby Keith, was co-written by him, and released in 1999.

This song is kind of funny, because the guy finally made it as a singing star with hit songs on the radio, and he goes back to show the girl that snubbed him back in high school, what she missed out on.

DEVIL RADIO

Phenomenon…An extraordinary, impressive, significant, unusual, unaccountable occurrence or fact that is perceptible by the senses.

That’s what I would call the Devil Radio incident…a phenomenon.

The incident happened a few years ago. I’ve always listened to the radio, late at night. My favorite program to hear, is Coast 2 Coast. It comes on at midnight, in our time zone, and topics range from conspiricy theories, ghosts, numerology, UFOs, bigfoot, and all types of weird and wonderful things you could ever imagine. They have guests from time to time, that speak on their experiences.

This night, they said they were going to interview a person that claimed he was the Devil.

Well, like I mentioned, there are some pretty far out there topics covered on this program, some believable, some not so much.  However, this was one I really didn’t want to hear…seemed too scary, to me. I kept the radio on, right up until the time came for the interview, then I turned it off. I keep my transistor radio by the pillow, so I can just reach up and turn it off if I want to, without getting out of bed.

So, I tried turning it off…but it wouldn’t stop playing the radio program.

I switched it on and off again, just to make sure…and I was sure it was turned off. But, it kept playing. I turned the dial to different stations, all across the dial, and the same show was playing on all the stations. Meanwhile, the interview was starting, and I was hearing what I didn’t want to hear.

In the end, I removed the batteries from the radio, and that seemed to work. No more Devil person talking. I have no idea why this happened, or how. I don’t really know what such a thing would be called in paranormal terms, as I’ve never heard of it happening to anyone else.

It never happened again, even though I listened to many more programs after that night. Maybe my radio was possessed by the Devil that one time? Who knows…

Q – What was your favorite music genre when you were young, and on what format did you listen to it?

Besides little kid’s records played on a little record player, I’ve pretty much listened to only rock ‘n roll. All kinds from soft rock, to hard rock, to alternative, to metal, that is what I listen to. I listen to a little country, because the mister likes it and plays it, but I can only take a little of it at a time.

I mostly listened to music on the radio, in the house, in the car, on my stereo, and on my transistor radio. I love a transistor radio, even now. When I graduated H.S. I bought myself a big console cabinet stereo. It had the record player, 8-track tape deck, and am/fm radio tuner. I had it for years. I still have lots of the vinyl 45s and 78s records I played from back then. We get them out from time to time to listen to.

Here’s a photo I just took of some of the 45s. 🙂 I have lots more.
