Thinking About Drive-Ins

***

Our city still has a drive-in movie theater. It’s called the Stars & Stripes, and has 3 screens. It is a newer one, being built in 2003 It is open year round.

We used to have a lot of drive-in movie theaters here. I remember going with my parents to watch movies when I was a kid. We’d brig snacks from home most times, but sometimes we would get something to eat from the snack bar there.

Movies didn’t start until dark, but we’d go earlier to gt a good spot to park the car. There was a playground up there under the big screen for the kids to play on the swings and slides.

Later on, when I was learning to drive, our driving class from school would practice driving out in the drive-in lot because it was empty, except for the speakers on poles!

Later still, I go on dates to the drive-in movies with my boyfriend – now husband. Good times, except once when his car wouldn’t start after the movie, and we had to call my dad to come get us. Embarrassing for sure.

Then, later all the drive-ins went out of business for some reason. Up until they built the new one. Sorry to say we have not gone to see a movie there. We’re older, and can’t stay up that late any more.

***

Now for another type of drive-in … the kind that you order food to eat in your car. There used to be a lot of these around, too. Now, not so many. We have one, Sonic, that is the same. You drive into a slot by the menu screen, order, and it will be brought to your car. The people who bring your food were called car-hops, and sometimes they wore roller skates. They still do sometimes, which is fun to see. You can eat there, or bring it home. Most times now you only see fast food restaurants with a Drive-Thru. You still order from a speaker and menu, but then you keep driving through to the pay and collect food window. I guess you can park and eat, but most don’t.

It seems the drive-ins used to be a teen gathering place, too. If you had a car, you’d get some friends and drive around and around and around in a circle at the drive-in parking area. I never did because I at first didn’t have a car, and then later thought it was kind of stupid. I don’t know if kids still do that.

How about you? Are there any drive-in movie theaters or drive-in food places there?

Your prompt for #JusJoJan and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “movie title.” Take the title of the last movie you watched (just the title, not the premise of the movie), and base your post on that title. Have fun!

Join in the fun – SOCS & Just Jot It January is brought to you by Linda G. Hill, and the prompts are always interesting. See more entries, and the details of how to join in at the above link. 🙂

Bits and pieces – That’s all I get.

We’re supposed to use the title of the last movie we watched for our prompt today. However, we don’t watch movies on TV very much, and don’t go to the theater to see them, either.

What I do get, is … bits and pieces of movies, as the mister is flipping channels on the remote control. It never stays on one thing or another for more than a minute or two, possibly a little longer, but not long enough to see a whole movie. I don’t care, though, because I’m not really interested in watching anyway, as I’m happier just sitting here reading & writing my blogs.

This photo is from one of my scrap books. I have many of them, and they all consist of bits and pieces of things I’ve saved to put on the pages. It’s fun to do. 🙂

Do you have any friends from your school days and if so how often do you socialise with them?
Do you find it difficult to admit that you are wrong, and why?
What was the title of the first movie you watched in a movie theater?
What was the most awkward thing that you’ve done for a friend?

***

  1.  I see a few from high school on FB sometimes. There is just one I regularly email. She lives a long way away now, but came up here this summer for a class reunion (our 50th) and we and our families had lunch together. That was good to see her.
  2. I don’t find it hard to say I’m wrong. Most of the time I am, and just go oh well…
  3. At a drive in I’m sure my family went to some, but the first one I remember was 101 Dalmations (the original animated one). Then I remember in an actual theater was ‘Gorgo’, a horror movie about a giant sea monster/dinosaur.
  4. I can’t remember doing anything ‘for’ a friend, but my friend and I from the first question were always doing silly things together, like buying guitars and trying to be a rock band, or chasing down actual rock stars, neither of which we ever succeeded at.

Que Sera Sera – What Will Be Will Be

Doris Day, the lovely actress and singer, passed away Monday, May 13. She was born on April 3, 1922, and enjoyed a very fulfilling career, which entertained us all.

Her love of animals also led to her becoming an animal welfare activist.

Here’s a few of her quotes:

I’m going to do as much as I can for the animal world, and I’ll never stop. ~  Doris Day

“I have found that when you are deeply troubled, there are things you get from the silent devoted companionship of a dog that you can get from no other source.”
Doris Day

***

And, I’ll leave you with her well known song…

“Que Sera Sera {What Will Be Will Be)”, by Doris Day, was written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, in 1956. It is on the Columbia label.

I’ve always enjoyed her movies, and these are just a few of many that I’ve seen:

Pillow Talk

With Six You Get Eggrolls

Please Don’t Eat the Daisies

Poem # 29

WITCHY FUN

~

From Oz to Salem, to suburban mayhem,

The witches entertained us all.

The witch of the west, was creepy at best,

And Glinda was belle of the ball.

Samantha twitched her nose,

Whenever she chose, and

Sabrina’s cat talks to her, it is true.

Elphaba was wicked,

Endora was vivid…

They all were an interesting crew.

The Sanderson sisters were funny and camp,

The witches of Eastwick were duped…

They all used their craft, and a bit of their vamp,

But Morticia’s my all favorite champ.

~

Shows referenced = Bewitched, The Wizard of Oz, The Addams Family, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Hocus Pocus, The Witches of Eastwick, and Wicked (broadway play)

CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN – DAY 3 – CHRISTMAS SPECIALS

Standard

***

Ok, so…Christmas Specials is the topic for the Christmas Countdown on day 3 of the challenge. (yes, I’m running late on these, go figure 🙂 …

Now, by Christmas Specials, I’m thinking these are for television programs? All I can think of are those for kids, like the Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman. I used to watch all of them. They are good and have stood the test of time, as I’m sure most little kids love them, even today. My kids liked them a lot, and I guess my grand-kids do, too. I sometimes see them on, but don’t make a point of sitting and watching the whole thing, these days.

If you are meaning, movie specials on TV…let’s see. I’m sure I’ve watched some, but can’t recollect what they were, right now. Maybe White Christmas, or It’s a Wonderful Life, but I’ve actually never watched them all the way through.

I do like the the sit-com TV show Christmas Specials. Pretty much all of them I’ll watch, more than once, if they are aired every season.

Do y’all make a point of watching the special Christmas shows every year?

It’s time again for SYW with questions from Cee and answers from me! 🙂

***

Do you prefer eating foods with nuts or no nuts?

I love all kinds of nuts, in all kinds of foods. Sadly, I cannot eat any nuts or seeds any more. Dr.’s orders, unless I want to wind up in the hospital again. I sure crave those nuts, seeds, and popcorn though. 😦

If someone made a movie of your life would it be a drama, a comedy, a romantic-comedy, action film, or science fiction?

I think it would have to be science fiction, with a big leaning toward comedy, and a touch of drama, because you just never know what is going to happen. Science fiction, because of all the ghosts, paranormal, alien influences…comedy, because at a moment’s notice things have a way of going crazy, and wrong, or there is some stupid mishap, and I have to find a way to deal with it. I try to see the humor in most everything, though. Then, for drama is the unexpected serious happenings, that are just not funny at all.

Who talks real sense to you?

The mister, and the daughter. At least they try. Mostly I nod and smile, then go on being confused.

Do you have a favorite board game?

I do love to play all board games. Problem is, no one is here that wants to play. They don’t like them. I get to play actual Scrabble about once or twice a year, with one daughter (who lives out of state) and that’s fun. Now my 3 year old grand-daughter is learning to play some board games, and Bop is always up for a game with her. 🙂

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

We had a nice Thanksgiving, the weather’s been nice (at least no snow), and my cold or whatever it was seems to be history! Next week…hoping the forecast is wrong…they are calling for a weekend of snow…noooo!
