Take out a nice piece of stationery and a pen. Get comfortable. You are going to write a letter. Take your time transferring your thoughts onto the paper. Is it a love letter you are writing? Are you writing to a far away relative, letting them know how your family is doing? Whatever form your letter takes, you are continuing a long tradition of communication.
In this age of the fast paced, immediate way of sharing your ideas with others via the internet, on FaceBook, Twitter and emails, actual letter writing is now a rarity. However, there is something satisfying about writing, sending, and receiving personal, handwritten letters.
Don’t you secretely hope, when you check your mailbox, that there will be a letter or card from a friend or loved one? Why don’t we write more letters the ‘old fashioned’ way? Is it because the price of stamps have gone up? Is it because it takes several days for a letter to arrive?
Have you saved your love letters in a packet, tied with a ribbon? Have you treasured old letters you’ve found from a long gone relative? What will future generations have to remember our past thoughts, hopes, family news, and celebrations?
They will only have electronic missives, that are there on your computer, yet not there…just lost in the thousands of other emails and direct messages. Why don’t we all try writing actual letters again. Find some pretty or cute paper, add some stickers, maybe a card, use your imagination to make it personal.
Surprise someone with a letter in their mailbox. I can assure you, they will smile. Maybe the next time you open your own mailbox, you will be happily surprised.

Letters – NanoPoblano 2023

“Please Introduce Yourself”
Hi there! We are a bunch of letters. The nice lady kept us for many years. She loves to write actual letters to be mailed, and so she did. She did have many pen-pals. There was a few magazines years ago, that were happy to print a letter you sent to them, asking for pen-pals. The nice lady did this a few different times, and each time received tons of responses in her mailbox. The letter writers came from all over the world. We are just a very few of the letters she was happy to receive, and they exchanged back and forth correspondence for quite a while.
You can see one of the letters she sent in to the magazine, and some of the many she’d gotten back. It was lots of fun to be part of the fun of sharing thoughts and ideas with many ladies. I think she would still be doing this, but since the prevalence of emails and such, not so many want to write or receive real letters in the mail anymore. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. 🙂

Just Jot It January # 13 – Subscribe
***
Your prompt today is brought to us by Willow!. Thank you so much, Willow!
Your prompt for JusJoJan January 13th, 2020, is “subscribe.” Use the word “subscribe” any way you’d like. Have fun!
***
We used to subscribe to the local newspaper, but haven’t in many years. I liked reading them, but I’d get so far behind they would just pile up unread. Any actual ‘news’ we’d already heard on the local TV station news casts, so mostly I liked the comics pages, and the crossword puzzle pages.
If there was some strange thing that happened, or whatever I thought really interesting, I’d clip out the piece to save. Did I ever go back to them? No. I finally threw it all away.
We used to subscribe to a magazine or two in the past, but no more. I can’t even remember what they were, except Golf Digest (for him). I’m not much of a magazine type reader, anyway. There were a couple I liked a long time ago, because they had pages where you could find a pen pal to write to. I had my letters published in those several times, and lots of people wrote letters to me, and I to them back & forth for quite a few years. I still have some of the letters. Most everyone stopped when the internet and emails became more of a thing.
It’s very seldom we’ll get a letter in the mail these days. A card now and again sure, but not letters. I miss that.
Blogging is kind of like having pen pals I think. At least some of us write electronically in the comments back & forth and get to know about each other a little. Progress – yes, in many ways, but still it was fun to get letters in the mailbox.

This is something new I’m trying, called the Three Things Challenge. Paula has taken on the hosting duties for this. You can find details at the above link. Thanks, Paula!
What happens is she will list 3 words for us daily to make something of, be it a story, poem, or whatever we want.
The 3 words for today are: seashells, letter, and yoga
***
While doing yoga on the beach
My hand stretched out in a lengthy reach
Got distracted by pretty seashells
Meditations came with waves and swells
Arranged the shells with letters formed
Spelled yoga – now the sand adorned

Fly – Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Letter
***
For today’s SOCS, our host, Linda G. Hill, has chosen the word – letter. Thanks, Linda! To join in this challenge, and also see other entries, just click the above link.

Why did Linda choose the word ‘letter’ for today’s prompt? Why did she choose the letter Y for last week’s prompt? Why did I not post a SOCS last week? Because I couldn’t think of anything, that’s why.
Now we have another letter, but it’s spelled out, instead of using a certain letter of the alphabet. I think she’s up to something with these kind of prompts. Why? What prompts Linda to prompt us with these letter prompts? Is there some kind of big surprise to be revealed later on? To be continued…
~
Linda left a letter prompt
I cannot tell you why
Maybe it’s a guessing game –
I think she’s pretty fly! (awesome & cool)

“Return to Sender”, by Elvis Presley, was released as a single from the album, “Girls, Girls, Girls”, in 1962. It was written by Winfield Scott, and Otis Blackwell, and is on the RCA Victor label.

[Intro: Elvis Presley]
Return to sender!
Return to sender!
[Verse 1: Elvis Presley]
I gave a letter to the postman
He put it in his sack
Bright in early next morning
He brought my letter back
[Verse 2: Elvis Presley]
She wrote upon it
Return to sender, address unknown
No such number, no such zone
We had a quarrel, a lover’s spat
I write I’m sorry but my letter keeps coming back
[Verse 3: Elvis Presley]
So then I dropped it in the mailbox
And sent it special D
Bright in early next morning
It came right back to me
[Bridge: Elvis Presley]
She wrote upon it
Return to sender, address unknown
No such person, no such zone
This time I’m gonna take it myself
And put it right in her hand
And if it comes back the very next day
Then I’ll understand the writing on it
[Outro: Elvis Presley]
Return to sender, address unknown
No such number, no such zone
Return to sender
Return to sender
Return to sender
Return to sender

Now, here’s another one. I actually chose this one first, but then found someone else had already picked this one. Oh well, I figure we all have lots of different readers on our blogs, so I’m including this one, too.

“P. S. I Love You”, by the Beatles, was released as the B side of the single, “Love Me Do”, in 1962 (UK), and 1964 (US). It was credited to the John Lennon/Paul McCartney team, as the writers, but I read that it was mostly the creation from Paul McCartney. It is on the Parlophone, and Tollie 9008 labels.
This song I found is a cover of the Beatles song. I found that most all of the Beatles song videos have been removed from Youtube.
I don’t know who did this cover, but it’s very good, in my opinion, and the photos included are nice for remembering. It also fits the prompt of writing letters.
Hope you enjoy going down memory lane with this one!

*[Chorus 1]
As I write this letter
Send my love to you
Remember that I’ll always
Be in love with you
[Chorus 2]
Treasure these few words till we’re together
Keep all my love forever
P.S. I love you
You, you, you
[Chorus 3]
I’ll be coming home again to you, love
And till the day I do, love
P.S. I love you
You, you, you
[Chorus 1]
As I write this letter
Send my love to you
Remember that I’ll always
Be in love with you
[Chorus 2]
Treasure these few words till we’re together
Keep all my love forever
P.S. I love you
You, you, you
As I write this letter
Send my love to you
Remember that I’ll always
Be in love with you
[Chorus 3]
I’ll be coming home again to you, love
And till the day I do, love
P.S. I love you
You, you, you**

PEPPER PICK-ME-UP
In 1885 or so
Dr Pepper stole the show
Secret formula writ in stone
Take some Dr Pepper home
A tonic made just for your brain
Cola wars were never the same
Dr Pepper, a digestive aid
Drink it up, you’ll have it made

This was a Quadrille 44 words poem I’ve had in my drafts for a long time.
I was just remembering that I used to write to businesses/companies all the time. Mostly the letters were a bit funny, but I really like their products, so why not tell them I like them? I’ve done this off and on since I was a kid just learning to write letters, and I’d get so excited when I got an answer from them. It’s still fun, and those that respond always send a nice cover letter, some brochures, and coupons for free products from them.
Here’s the letter I wrote to the Dr Pepper (soft drink) Company:
Dear Dr Pepper Company,
I am a Dr Pepper drinker from way back. I have enjoyed this most unique beverage for many years. I like it cold, and even hot, with a slice of lemon, as your company was promoting at one time.
I also like the logos, songs, and advertisements associated with Dr Pepper. As a kid, I remember the 10 – 2 – 4 ad. I’m not quite sure what that was; were you supposed to have a DP at those times of day? Also did a Saint Bernard dog appear in those logos? I love dogs, and this is what seemed to catch my attention. (am I mistaken?)
Then, when my children were small, the catchy TV jingle was popular: ‘He’s a Pepper, She’s a Pepper, wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper, too?’ Everyone had that song in their head.
So yes, we’ve had many years of enjoyment from your product.
However, I’ve heard a disturbing rumor that I’d like clarified. There is another soda that is called Mr Pibb. It is very similar in taste to your Dr Pepper. It is not sold here in our town, except from the fountain at the movie theater. We were curious as to why it is not sold in our stores also.
I don’t have any idea who makes this Mr Pibb, as we can’t find it here; possibly a rival company to yours? At any rate, we asked a person who was stocking the shelves what the deal was. He said that your company would not sell your product in the same market as Mr Pibb. Is that true? And, if it is, why not? If you are afraid of the competition, I don’t think you have anything to worry about.
Dr Pepper is a mainstay, at least around here, and you have many loyal customers. Sure, some people would buy Mr Pibb, but then people buy all sorts of soft drink flavors. Why, if it is true, do you have a grudge against this one rival? Is it because of it’s similarity to Dr Pepper in taste? If you had a blind taste test between you both, I have no doubt the customer would pick the superior taste of DP every time!
So, that’s it. Will you please verify or deny this rumor for me?
Thanks for making Dr Pepper all these years.
Your customer,
xxx (me)
P.S. Do you also have a brochure about your company and it’s origins?

That was the letter I wrote. They did send me a whole bunch of pamphlets, brochures, and coupons for free products. They didn’t answer my question. 🙂
