Esther’s Writing Prompt – Water

For Esther’s challenge:

Writing Prompts

***

Our prompt is about water. What can I say? I drink water, I wash in water, and sometimes it rains water, but usually not enough around here. However, this one time we flooded!

Here’s a post about a flood we had one year.

These photos are from a few years ago. We had so much rain, it flooded the whole city, and they called it the 100 year flood. It is rare we have so much rain at one time here. Our street was taken over by the playa lake we live next to, and was cordoned off for a long time, as the water slowly receded. There were ducks swimming in front of our house, and duck eggs were washed up into the yard. My husband even got interviewed for the newspaper, with a photo in there, too.

I don’t know if Esther adds photos on her  blog re-cap of the prompts, so here’s a link to the post I wrote with the photos: here

the photos show, ducks swimming in our street, and three of the lake basically in our yard.

Are these horses and riders confused? Why are they in the lake by our house? I’m confused, but I’m glad I got to see them!  🙂

Lost and Lonely

Spirit roams

Lost and lonely

Searching for the soul

You feel it’s wandering

Lost and lonely

Foggy thoughts not whole

Spirit weeps in confusion

Illusion – delusion

Lost and lonely

Drifting in the evernight

Will you not give Spirit solace

Guide him to everlasting light

My photo of a foggy night with a light shining through

For Ragtag Daily Prompt the word is horse. 🙂

We see people riding horses around here quite a lot. These three riders and horses were taking a break by wading in the lake by our house one day.

These big horses were pulling carriages around a shopping center parking lot. They were giving free rides at Christmas time.

Several different ducks swimming down the road in front of our house. We’d had a lot of rain, and the lake by our house overflowed and flooded everything. Our street was blocked off for days until the water receded. Meanwhile, the ducks had fun swimming in the road.

This looks to be a Muscovy Duck. It is mostly black with a few white spots. He has a distinctive red area around the eyes. This one was at a local park at the lake by our house.

House # 22 – The Last One

Standard

House # 22 – The Last One

***

This is the house we live in now, and have for over 20 years. Looks like that first photo of the house and yard was taken in the winter or something as there are no leaves on the tree.

This house has three bedrooms, a living room/dining room all in one big area, a smallish kitchen, and two baths and a garage. We’ve put a shed in the back yard, too.

The second photo is a silhouette of a coyote and a cactus that are up on the front white wall. There is a weathered wooden bench below.

The third photo is showing part of the front of the house and is brick. There are actually four cats on the porch when I took this picture. There is our large fruitless Mulberry tree, and a weathered wooden bench under it. Thanks to our former neighbors for building the benches for us!

The fourth photo shows looking from our front yard over to the east and you can see part of the playa lake.

What to say about the memories of this house – many and of course we are still making them as we live here. We’ve had great neighbors over the years and everyone watches out for everyone else. (Kelly and DB – we miss you living next door!)

This house was built in the 70s and had only one owner before us, and we met them. Nice people, in fact the Mr. was one of my daughter’s teachers in college. So nothing strange about that … but … now for the spooky parts!

I’ve written on this blog about some of the ghostly happenings here before. If you’re interested here are the links:

These are some trees I saw while we were driving around today. Not too bad for taking the photo as we were moving on down the road.

  • Two large trees in a roadside park. In between is a fountain spraying into the little lake.
  • A medium sized tree in a business landscaping area. In the foreground is some yellow/dried bear grass.
  • Another medium sized tree by the road.
  • A couple of trees by the lake by our house (you can see a bit of the blue water)

“Don’t Let Him Off the Leash!”

***

This is my daughter’s dog, Maynard Wayne. He’s a big, friendly, and boisterous dog.

One morning my husband wanted to take him for a walk, down to the lake by our house, so we put him on the leash, and off they went out the back gate. My daughter and I watched from the back porch, as dog and man made their way toward the water.

Now, what did we say, right before they left? “Don’t let him off the leash!” That’s because he’d be off and running wild, and when he’s like that, he doesn’t want to pay attention to the rules.

Sure enough, as we watched, the first thing that happened was, he was let off the leash. We just shook our heads and watched the drama take place.

Maynard took off  like a shot, jumped in the lake, and started swimming to the other side. We could hear my husband hollering, “Maynard, come back!”, and trying to run around to the other side of the lake to intercept him. This went on awhile. Finally, he caught up with the dog, and put his leash back on, and they trudged back to the house, Maynard dripping wet, with stinky lake water. We had to immediately give him a bath. He hates baths. He loves swimming in old lake water, but hates to be bathed…go figure.

This was a good time to say, “We told you not to let him off the leash!”

P.S. Maynard, his brother dog, and the family are coming to visit again, this weekend! Whee!
