“Precious! Precious!”

We lived across the street from a city park. Every day we heard a lady calling for Precious.

One day we were in the park at the same time as the lady, and so we asked her who was Precious. She said it was her little dog. She told how Precious was very placid, not violent, and liked to roam around the park. Her house was by the park too, and she’d let the dog out to walk around in the grass for a little while, but she didn’t want to come back when called. She said that’s the only time she’d get ferocious, when making her come back inside.

So now we knew who Precious was, but we actually never saw her dog. Hmmm. odd.

note: when I first saw these words for the challenge I read that one as precious, instead of ferocious. hee hee  … also this was a true story, not fiction. And now even many years later, if my daughters or I start hollering Precious! we all start laughing as we immediately know what that means. 🙂 and now I’m remembering the scene from the Lord of the Rings!

1. Back when I was a kid, there in our neighborhood across the street from us, was a family with three boys. They were okay I guess, just regular kids doing regular kid type things. But the older lady next door to us didn’t like them at all. Any excuse to accuse the boys of doing something naughty, she would. She’d rant and rave about those delinquent boys, and they better stay out of her yard, and on and on she went. The boys didn’t go out of their way to aggravate her or anyone as far as I knew. But the one phrase I remember the most that she always said was … “I’m calling the FBI on them”.  The FBI stands for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and I don’t think they’d come out to arrest the boys for being kids.

Funny though, I didn’t know what that was, the FBI, because I was just a kid myself, and I always thought she was saying she was going to call the ‘Yippie Yi’. That didn’t make sense at all. The only Yippie Yi I’d ever heard of was in relation to cowboy’s hollering yippie yi, to the cattle they were herding. Home, home on the range kind of deal was what I was thinking about. What…was the yippie yi going to come round up the boys like cattle… and then what? Actually nobody really worried about it or paid her any attention when she started ranting.

But, I still remember. I don’t remember when exactly I finally figured out it was the FBI she was talking about, though. 🙂
