For Linda’s challenge:

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Feb. 7, 2026

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “chapter.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

Chapter = these to me are the division in a book. I think maybe it’s because there is a change of point of view of the characters, or a different scene that is being written about? I’m really not sure why there are chapters in a book. Maybe it’s to give us a short break to go get a snack, or use the bathroom, or do a couple of chores, or go to the store. Chapters make a good stopping place, and most times they are numbered so you can remember where you left off. Still, it’s good to have a bookmark to save the page, too.

Chapters in books are strange. They can be as long or short as the author wants them to be. I guess they’d be called ‘unregulated’? I’ve seen some chapters that were one sentence long, or just one word long! What’s up with that? Then there are some that go on for many pages. You think surely there will be a break in there somewhere, but no, it keeps going and going like the energizing bunny. haha

Now I like a long book, that is if I’m enjoying the book’s subject whether fiction or non-fiction. But to make chapters super long by adding tons of description just to fill in, that’s not good.

And why do I keep typing chapter as chapeter ??? I’ve had to retype it every single time!

Have a fun Saturday. I hope if you are having cold or not fun weather you’ll be safe and warm. For us the last few days and week to come will be spring feeling up in the high 70s to 80s. Yay! But by Friday we’ll plunge back down to the 40s and 50s and we’ll be feeling like we’re freezing again. And thus goes the ‘chapeters’ of the weather days.

📚📚📚

So, I was thinking about this word. The more I looked at it and said it to myself and out loud, the weirder it sounded.

Where did this word come from, and why do books always have them? I’ve read books forever and it’s true. Some books actually divide up parts into chapters and say so right there on the page. Other don’t say it’s a new chapter – just have the word one or two or whatever, and others just have some space before starting new thoughts.

When a kid is learning to like and read books, they start with a picture book. That’s pretty simple. Then they have a few short words to read, gradually adding more. Later they graduate to books with chapters. From what I’ve heard, this is a big deal for kids, to begin reading chapter books. We never called it that when I was a kid, though. Guess we didn’t call it anything.

Now, where did this word come from? I’ll google it.

From Wiki:

The first known use of chapter was in the 13th century
English word chapter comes from Proto-Indo-European *kaput-, and later Proto-Italic *kaput (Head.)

Well, that was a trip down the rabbit hole of information. Interesting, but too much to list here. Look it up if you want to.

Still, when I think of the word chapter, I think of having chapped hands. It always happens in the fall and winter, no matter how much lotion I use.
Also, I think of cowboys wearing chaps while riding their horses.
These have nothing to do with books and chapters, though.
I like chapters in books. It gives us a place to take a break from reading if you need to. Or an excuse to keep reading as in ‘just one more chapter’ …
