Two Souls: Into the Fire # 270

Warning … adult content

***

Steve sat up, resigned to no more sleep. Ghost was not in the tent, and there was no telling where he was. He hoped he wasn’t sleepwalking again.

“Okay, let’s go,” Steve said. He and Stevie crawled out of the tent. He was surprised to see it actually was still dark out, and not morning, as Stevie had said. It wasn’t just shadows from the trees making it seem dark in the tent.

“Which way did Ghost go?” Steve asked, as he looked around, not seeing him.

Stevie didn’t seem very sure, but said, “That way, I think…maybe?” He was pointing toward the trees behind the camp site.

Steve sighed. “Well, kiddo, let’s get you over to your Mom’s tent.” They walked the few feet over there, and Steve called out quietly, “Linda, Linda…Stevie’s coming in with y’all.”

“What…is it morning?” Linda asked, barely awake.

“Not yet, but I think Ghost’s gone sleepwalking. I gotta go find him.”

~

Steve grabbed the flashlight, and shined it toward the trees. “Ghost…where are you?” He kept walking and calling, but got no answer. After a few minutes, he stood still and just listened. He heard the tree frogs, loud and clear, and a cricket buzzed. He could feel sweat trickling down his face, now, and he was really getting worried. Swatting away a moth, that was in the flashlight beam, he suddenly stopped, listening harder. It was a voice…Ghost’s voice.

“Spider’s been spinnin’ all summer…we’ll have a bad winter.”

Steve’s first thought was that Ghost was reliving the time they first met. He shined the flashlight beam up into the trees, scanning them, then finally seeing Ghost.

“Ghost, get down from there,” Steve said, but Ghost just laughed.

“Wake up, damn it…damn it, Ghost…don’t do this, please…not now.” In the light, he could see Ghost peering down, his hair framing those eyes, that were now seeing only the hazy past.

I have to get him down, but how? How did he even get up there…the tree branches are higher than my head…okay, think…think…a bribe…maybe that’ll work…

“Hey, Ghost…you ready for some coffee? I’m making some over there. Get your cup, so I can pour you some while it’s hot.”

“Coffee? I want coffee, Steve,” Ghost said.

“C’mon then, let’s go,” Steve said. As hard as it was, he turned away, heading back to the camp site, to actually make a pot of coffee. The smell would surely bring Ghost down from the tree, he thought.

When he got back to the tents, Linda asked, “Did you find him?”

“Yeah, up a tree. He’s coming down, I think. I gotta make coffee,” Steve said, but just stood there staring at the fire pit. Linda got out the coffee pot, and started the fire.

“Steve…?” Linda asked, as she could tell he was about to lose it.

“He…he was talking like it was the first time we ever talked to each other. He said the very same thing…” Steve choked back a sob.

Linda made him sit down. “Oh, honey, he’s still asleep, probably, and dreaming of that day.”

Steve nodded. “Maybe…I hope that’s all it is. He’s always weird when he sleepwalks, but I still worry he may stay that way.” He took a shuddery breath.

Linda squeezed his arm. “I know, and it sounds dumb, but worry doesn’t help or change anything.” Steve nodded again.

The coffee aroma was drifting through the air, now. Steve kept looking toward the trees, hoping Ghost’s pale form would materialize. Linda spotted him first.

“He’s here,” she said, softly. They watched, as Ghost came closer. They couldn’t tell yet if he’d woken up.

“Ghost, are you awake now?” Steve asked.

“Coffee?” Ghost said, reaching for the cup Linda was holding out for him. He took it, and drank several gulps of the hot brew…black.

Steve knew he’d never drink it without cream and sugar, if he was awake. “Ghost, can you wake up, now? It’s morning…time to wake up.” He clapped his hands together, loud. It startled Linda and Ghost; they both jumped. Ghost dropped the cup, which splattered onto Steve’s jeans, leaving dark, running stains.

“Spider’s on you, Steve,” Ghost shrieked, and began slapping Steve’s legs. “Get it off, get it off, it’s gonna bite you, and spin a web over you…” he kept hollering.

Steve hopped around, trying to grab Ghost’s arms, to make him calm down. Melody woke up, and stuck her head out of the tent. “What’s happening?” She stood, and still unsteady, made her way over. “Why’s he yelling? Make it stop.” She covered her ears. “My head’s gonna explode,” she wailed.

Linda, shocked at first, couldn’t help it; she started laughing. The whole scene taking place in front of her was so bizarre, she had to let it out…big belly laughs that made her eyes water.

“Oh my, God, stop it y’all,” she tried to say, but never quite got it all out, before another wave of laughter took hold.

Finally, Steve grabbed Ghost, who wrenched himself out of Steve’s grip. “What are you doin’, Steve? Let go…” He jerked back so hard he fell flat on his butt. This made Linda cackle even louder, and she peed her pants, right there. She couldn’t have stopped it if she’d tried.

Ghost looked at her then, and started laughing, too. Steve and Linda knew he was finally awake.

After they’d all calmed down, Linda excused herself to go change clothes.

“How are you feeling?” Steve asked Ghost.

“Yeah, I’m fine. What happened…I can’t remember anything.” He had poured himself another cup of coffee, this time made how he liked it. He held it with both hands, feeling the warmth, and inhaling the steamy aroma. He was hoping it would clear his head, but it was making him sleepy, instead.

Steve explained all that had happened. Ghost frowned. “I was in a tree?”

“Yeah, and I made coffee to get you to come down.” Steve told him all that had happened.

“Huh, I don’t remember any of it,” Ghost said.

Steve studied Ghost’s face, knowing it was true. Ghost never remembered what he did when he was sleepwalking. “You were asleep, doing all that, Ghost.”

Ghost glanced up. “I wish I wouldn’t do that. I’m glad you always come find me.”

“You know I will,” Steve said.

Ghost sighed. When we gonna be home? I need to be home, Steve.” He bit his lower lip, and swallowed hard, trying not to cry.

Steve’s heart melted. He wanted to make everything better for Ghost, but Ghost still had demons to fight…and always would.

“I know, babe, and it will be real soon. We’ll drive today, and there’ll be one more night, and after driving some more, we’ll be there,” Steve tried to explain. Again, he wondered how it must feel to not have any concept of time, and how long or short things were. He watched, as Ghost brushed away a few tears that had started to fall.

“Ghost, what’s wrong? Why are you so sad?”

Ghost just shook his head. “Don’t, Steve. I just need to be sad for awhile. I need to think of things. It’s so hard, anymore.”

March 15, 2026 – Song related to weather conditions of sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, or stormy suggested by Nancy of the Elephant’s Trunk aka The Sicilian Storyteller

***

There are so  many songs relating to weather conditions that I like, but this one just popped into my head this  morning, so here it is now.

This song tells a story of a guy who wants to get his big break into the entertainment business, so goes to California, as he has heard it is always sunshine and a good place to be ‘discovered’.  But, he comes to find out the truth, that it is not that easy. He winds up broke, homeless and really wants to go home. But he doesn’t want people back home to know how  bad it was for him. For him maybe it doesn’t just rain a little, the bad luck really pours down on him.

“It Never Rains In Southern California”, by Albert Hammond, can be found on his 1972 album of the same name. It was written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood, and is on the Mums label. … More of the particulars here

SOCS – review

For Linda’s challenge:

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS March 14, 2026

***

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “review.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

***

I’m not fond of this word – review.

We used to get that from teachers in school when we had to go over the same subject over and over –boring!

Another is when there are reviews of movies or books. I don’t read them much,  because either I figure they are not accurate. or, even if they are they don’t seem to match up with my thoughts on the movie or book. Either they exaggerate the wonderfulness of it or put it down really low. Maybe now the reviewers are paid for saying something, I don’t know.

That said, a few years ago I did do an A to Z month of books I’ve read, and told a little about them.

Melody and Ghost passed the wine bottle back and forth, taking swigs of the Scuppernong.

“Oh, I’m feeling it,” Melody said, after a few minutes. “Are you?”

Ghost nodded. His eyes were having trouble focusing on Melody’s face. Somehow, before he knew how it happened, he was lighting a perfectly rolled joint. He took a toke, and handed it to his sister.

“You think I should? I never…”

“Sure, go ahead…”

She put it to her lips. It was a night of firsts for her, and she planned on enjoying it. Coughing and giggling, she handed it back to Ghost. “I think I’m floating,” she said. “And, the trees are laughing. Do you see them?”

Ghost squinched his eyes to stare into the darkness. I don’t see the trees, just some spirits walking around over there.”

“What? Where?” she asked, looking all around.

He pointed off toward the low shrubbery. “There…pretend you’re not looking, then you can see them, sort of, well they’re just misty looking.”

“I see some fog coming around. That’s all,” she said, pulling the blanket closer around them.

“Yeah, that’s them,” Ghost said. “You’ll get better at it, don’t worry.”

“Who are they?” Melody asked.

Ghost shrugged. “I don’t know, they aren’t saying anything. Maybe they’re just travelers , like us. Maybe they can see us too, like all foggy. Maybe they’re not really ghosts, but just people on a different wavelength, or well…something…and we just happen to notice at the right time.”

“You tell the most interesting stories, Ghost,” Melody said. “I want to hear more.”

He smiled. “You will. I tell them all the time. Sometimes they’re real, though.”

They took a few more swallows of wine. Ghost remembered the phone he’d put in his pocket.

“I have an idea,” he said. “I’m gonna call Kinsey. I want to say hey, but I’m not going to tell him you’re here. You’re a surprise.”

“Okay, I’ll just listen,” Melody said, and laughed at the thought that she was a surprise.

Ghost punched in the letters for Kinsey’s bar. Kinsey answered, in a loud voice.

“Hello? Kinsey here.”

Ghost could hear loud music in the background, probably Gumbo, doing their set.

“Hey, Kinsey, it’s me,” he said.

“Ghost? Hey man…how are y’all…where are y’all?”

“We’re somewhere in a camp out place. We have tents. We’re coming home soon, and we have a surprise,” Ghost said. He laughed, and Melody covered her mouth so she wouldn’t be heard laughing.

“Hey cool, who is that…Linda?” Kinsey asked. He’d heard after all.

“Um, I gotta go, Kinsey,” Ghost said. “We’re drinking wine, and smoking. Bye.”

“Wait…” Kinsey said, but Ghost had already shut off the phone.

“He sounds nice,” Melody said.

“Yeah, he is,” Ghost said, lighting up another joint. They were enjoying the wine and smoke, and talked quietly about silly things for awhile.

“Ghost, I want to know all about you,” Melody said. “I always wanted a real family.”

“Did you ever think there was someone in the world that you were connected to?” Ghost asked.

“When I let myself think of it, yeah. I couldn’t have just appeared out of nowhere, you know.”

Ghost nodded. “Me too, but I did have my grandmother. She raised me…brought me down from the mountains.” He sighed. “You would have liked her.”

Melody smiled. “I’m sure I would have.”

“So you didn’t like the parents that adopted you?” Ghost asked.

Melody shrugged. “They’re okay, but when I was a little older, they left me alone a lot. Then I just ran off. They didn’t care. So, I didn’t, either.”

Ghost was feeling pretty high by now, but he peered into Melody’s eyes. He knew there was more to her story. Melody was thinking the same about him. They grinned at each other.

~

Back at the campfire, Steve and Linda had finished their conversation. “Hey, where’s Ghost and Melody?” Linda asked. She’d just noticed they were gone.

“I don’t know, maybe they went into one of the tents,” Steve said. He stretched, and walked over to one. “No, not in here.”

“Not here either,” Linda said, over at the other tent. “Just the kiddos, sound asleep.”

Steve scanned the campsite area. “Well, where are they?” He walked a little closer toward the woods, then heard laughing. “Linda, they’re over here. I’m gonna check it out,” he said.

As he got closer, he could smell the smoke. “What the…” he said, and then saw the flashlight shining over by a tree. “Hey, what the hell are y’all doing?” He was standing over Ghost and Melody.

“Hey, Steve,” Ghost slurred. “We drinking this here wine. Ya want some?” he held out the bottle. Melody laughed, because the bottle was empty.

“You’re smoking,” Steve said. “I thought I told you to get rid of it.”

“Um, I forgot,” Ghost said, and then tumbled over onto his back.

“Get up,” Steve said. “Get back to the tents.” He stood there waiting, as they tried to stand up. “Y’all are pitiful,” he said, but couldn’t keep from laughing at their feeble attempts to get up.

Ghost finally managed to stand upright, by holding onto Steve, who then reached a hand out to help Melody up.

“This is some good shit, Steve, but there’s none left…sorry,” Ghost said.

“Whatever…” Steve said, shaking his head. He walked back to their camp with them, helping to steady them along the way.

“Look what I found, Linda,” Steve said. “They’re high as a kite.”

“Did y’all at least have fun?” Linda asked.

“Yeah, it was fun,” Melody said.

“Well, good. Let’s get to bed,” Linda said, taking Melody’s arm. “Oh, Steve, would you move Stevie over to your tent for me?” She and Melody went inside their tent, while Steve picked up a sleeping Stevie, to carry him over to his and Ghost’s tent.

Ghost crawled in after, and was passed out right where he fell. Steve looked at him, and rolled his eyes. Then, he went to check on Linda, again.

“Y’all okay over here?”

“We’re fine. How’s Ghost?”

“Passed out.”

“Yep, Melody, too. They’re gonna feel great in the morning,” Linda said, and laughed.

“Hah, you’re right about that,” Steve said. “Holler if you need anything.”

~

It seemed only a few minutes had passed, when Steve was wakened by Stevie, yelling right up in his face. “Uncle Steve, get up, it’s morning.”

Steve cracked open an eye. Stevie’s face was inches away from his own. “Go back to sleep,” Steve mumbled.

“No, I want mommy and breakfast.”

Steve yawned. “Your mom’s still asleep, too. It’s not morning yet.”

“But Ghost is up already,” Stevie said.

“Huh?” Steve looked over…Ghost wasn’t in the tent. “Aw, shit,” he said.

“You said a bad word, you said shit,” Stevie said, and laughed.

“Yes, I did, but you shouldn’t, kiddo.”

“Why not?”

“‘Cause you’re a kid. Anyway, where did Ghost go?”

“Out there…” Stevie opened the tent flap, and pointed.
