Summary

  • Fix incorrect quaternion component ordering in update_body_inertia_kernel that silently corrupted body orientation quaternions
  • wp.quat(q[1], q[2], q[3], q[0]) shuffled components to [y,z,w,x] instead of the intended [w,x,y,z] wxyz format
  • Fix: wp.quat(q[3], q[0], q[1], q[2]) correctly maps Warp's xyzw to mujoco_warp's wxyz storage
  • This caused reconstructed inertia tensors (R @ diag(d) @ R^T) to differ from native MuJoCo by up to ~1.3e-2 for bodies with off-diagonal inertia terms
  • With the fix, inertia tensors match to ~1.8e-7

Impact

Any model with non-axis-aligned body inertia (i.e., bodies where body_iquat is not identity) was affected. This includes most MJCF models with authored <inertial quat="..."/>. Models with purely diagonal inertia (identity iquat) were unaffected because all quaternion orderings produce the same identity rotation.

Test plan

  • New TestMuJoCoSolverBodyIquat.test_iquat_matches_native: creates a body with non-trivial inertia orientation, verifies reconstructed 3x3 tensor matches native MuJoCo
  • Existing TestMuJoCoSolverQpos0 and UR5e menagerie tests pass

The update_body_inertia_kernel converted Warp's xyzw quaternion to

orientation quaternions, causing inertia tensor reconstruction errors
up to ~1.3e-2.

Fix: wp.quat(q[3], q[0], q[1], q[2]) correctly maps xyzw to wxyz.
With this fix, reconstructed inertia tensors match to ~1.8e-7.

diagonal inertia and compensating np.roll. Both tests now fail with the
old buggy xyzw→wxyz conversion and pass with the fix.

Replace 12 inline xyzw/wxyz quaternion conversions with shared
quat_wxyz_to_xyzw() and quat_xyzw_to_wxyz() helpers. The inline
index shuffling was error-prone and hard to verify at a glance.

Pure refactoring — no semantic changes.

Done — added quat_wxyz_to_xyzw() and quat_xyzw_to_wxyz() as @wp.func helpers in kernels.py and replaced all 12 inline conversion sites. Also added cross-reference comments to the Python-only quat_to_mjc/quat_from_mjc in solver_mujoco.py. See 642cdf9.
