Description

Optimizes the GL viewer's shape transform pipeline to eliminate per-shape-group CUDA kernel launches, which were causing severe performance bottlenecks on Windows due to WDDM overhead (~700-800μs per kernel launch).

Before: Each shape instance group triggered separate update_shape_xforms + update_vbo_transforms kernel launches and individual device-to-host copies. For models like ANYmal with many shape groups, this resulted in ~20 FPS even when paused.

After: A single fused kernel (_compute_shape_vbo_xforms) processes all model shapes in one launch, reading directly from model arrays (shape_transform, shape_body, shape_scale, shape_type, shape_world) with coalesced reads and scatter-writing mat44 transforms to contiguous grouped output positions via a write-index array. A single wp.copy to a pre-allocated pinned host buffer followed by one wp.synchronize replaces all per-group CUDA operations. Non-mesh shapes (boxes, spheres, planes) correctly use identity scale since their geometry mesh already has dimensions baked in.

Key changes:

  • viewer_gl.py: New _compute_shape_vbo_xforms kernel and _build_packed_vbo_arrays() setup. log_state() uses the batched path on CUDA, falling back to the standard per-group path on CPU.
  • viewer.py: Extracted _log_non_shape_state() from log_state() so non-shape rendering (SDF isomeshes, inertia boxes, particles, joints) can be shared between the base class and the GL override.
  • opengl.py: Added MeshInstancerGL.update_from_pinned() for direct upload of pre-computed mat44 transforms from pinned host memory slices to GL VBOs.

Performance improvement: ~20 FPS → 90+ FPS on the ANYmal robot example (Windows, RTX 4080).
