A Case Study: Evonik & 3DforScience:
Evonik, a global leader in specialty chemicals, launched the Evonik Skin Institute to unify its expertise in skin biology, microbiome science, and cosmetic innovation. To communicate the mission of this new initiative, Evonik partnered with 3DforScience to produce a high-quality 3D animation that would highlight the dynamic nature of the skin, its complex biological interactions, and the institute’s cutting-edge research.

The animation speaks directly to two audiences: cosmetic scientists and industry stakeholders. It visually demonstrates how skin functions at a cellular and systemic level, and how Evonik leverages “omics” technologies (epigenetics, microbiome, tissue engineering) to shape the next generation of active ingredients. The video highlights the institute’s role as both a research center and a driver of collaborative innovation.

To showcase the science behind the story, our team recreated detailed models of the skin’s layers, the microbiome, and extracellular matrix. From fibroblasts to immune cells, every component was animated to reflect its real biological role.
The transitions between normal skin, environmental stress, and scientific analysis allowed viewers to understand the importance of research in adapting skin care to complex challenges.

Starting with the script and research materials, we developed storyboards and designed the visual language of the animation. Fluorescent lighting and dynamic camera movement enhanced the sensation of the skin being alive, constantly reacting to internal and external cues. Every sequence was aligned with Evonik’s visual identity and scientific positioning.

We aimed to create an animation that could educate, inspire, and differentiate. By blending immersive 3D environments with data-inspired visual metaphors, we brought to life the Skin Institute’s interdisciplinary approach to cosmetic science.
The animation creates an emotional connection with the audience, while maintaining technical accuracy and scientific credibility.

Our collaboration with Evonik included a streamlined workflow: from early conceptualization and scientific validation, through 3D modeling, animation, voiceover, and final rendering. Feedback from Evonik’s scientific and communications teams was integrated throughout the process, resulting in a polished and effective visual asset.

The final animation was not only visually striking but also served as a core asset for Evonik Skin Institute’s launch communications. Used across conferences, internal trainings, and digital platforms, the video successfully conveyed the institute’s purpose and scientific edge.
“Evonik approached this project with a clear goal: to transform complex scientific ideas into a story that resonates. Through close collaboration, we helped them deliver a message that reflects their innovation, their science, and their vision for the future of skin care.”
