A Case Study on Biogen:

Harnessing Interactivity to Enhance Scientific Communication

Biogen, a global leader in neuroscience, sought to revolutionize how healthcare professionals (HCPs) and patients understand complex neurodegenerative disorders.
Their goal: create immersive, interactive tools to explain the science behind these diseases and the therapeutic promise of Spinraza® (nusinersen).

The Strategy:
Illuminating Neurodegeneration Through Immersive Storytelling

Neurodegenerative disorders like SMA and FA pose dual challenges: complex biology and rarity, complicating education and diagnosis. Biogen aimed to transform engagement through Spinraza®, a therapy advancing SMA care and FA research.

By integrating interactive projection walls, VR, and digital tools, 3DforScience built an adaptive platform to simplify mechanisms like SMN2 gene splicing (SMA) and frataxin deficiency (FA) into clear, impactful narratives—equipping clinicians with depth, patients with hope, and investors with insights.

Multifaceted Solutions for Complex Science

Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) involve intricate genetic mechanisms that drive neurodegeneration. Spinraza® addresses SMA by enhancing SMN2 splicing; FA research focuses on mitochondrial repair.

3DforScience crafted a versatile toolkit to unify these narratives:

Interactive Walls: Simplified FA’s genetic cascade for HCPs.
VR Simulations: Immersed researchers in mitochondrial pathways.
Patient Tools: Translated SMA science into hopeful visuals for families.

Result: One science, endless perspectives—clinicians decoded mechanisms, patients saw progress, and investors recognized cross-disease innovation.

Our workflow:
From concept to delivery

These visuals highlight the creative process behind the development of Biogen’s interactive experiences. The goal was to present complex neurological concepts in a clear and engaging way, making the information accessible to a wide audience. From initial storyboarding to final implementation, every element was carefully designed to ensure scientific accuracy and a seamless interactive experience.

The final outcome

The three interactive applications successfully transformed complex scientific information into an engaging and accessible experience, enhancing understanding of Friedreich’s Ataxia and Spinraza’s mechanism of action. By unifying interactive technologies, Biogen can further refine its scientific communication strategy, offering more engaging and immersive experiences that enhance understanding and set the company apart in the industry.

“3DforScience helped shape our vision into the right concept and technology for our program. We had VR and an MOA video, but on site the Interactive Wall was the magnet, and the web kept the conversation going.”
