School Days – SOCS – Element

The only thing I’m thinking about for this prompt is the elementary school I went to as a kid. I went there from pre-school through the 6th grade.

The name of the school was Arnett Elementary, and was in our neighborhood. The mascot was an antelope. It was a really good school, I always thought, but now it is closed down. I don’t know why, except maybe there just aren’t many kids that live around there anymore, as it is a very old neighborhood, and everyone’s kids have grown up and left.

I, along with most all my classmates walked to school. I remember it was 8 blocks from my house. We’d have our set routine of route along the way, meeting up with others along the way.

We all knew everyone out in our neighborhood addition, and everyone’s houses. There was one house we all knew was a witch’s house. It was scary going by there even in the daytime. Her overgrown yard of plants, vines, and trees looked spooky, and she had lots of scary wooden masks hanging from the branches.

We never had playground equipment like swings or jungle gyms. I remember one PTA meeting where the parents voted against that, and instead planted some trees instead. Little tiny trees, which after many years did grow bigger. But still, we wanted a playground. What we had was dried up grass and dirt. But we did invent games to play out there. Oh well. Still fond memories of the students/friends and teachers. Every year there would be a Halloween carnival held in the whole school. That was fun.

There is still a FB group I read comprised of all of us that went to school there so many years ago. 🙂

Cheer Chants – Stream of Consciousness Saturday – SOCS – Cheers

So, the first thing that most probably everyone thought of with the prompt of ‘cheers’, is the TV show called, “Cheers”.

I thought of it too, but I’m sure I’m in the minority, and going against the grain, by saying I never did like that show. I watched a few of them, and didn’t see the appeal. First, I wasn’t crazy about the actors, or the characters they played. That it was set in a bar, wasn’t my favorite setting, either. I’ve been down the drinking, partying road many years ago, and don’t care to do it any more. Wasn’t much fun then, and I can’t imagine it being fun now.

Now…

What I really want to talk about is this…Cheer-leading.

Yes, once upon a time I tried out for being a cheer leader at school, but being non-athletic, and uncoordinated, I didn’t make it. (hah!)

However, my daughter did. She began her cheer-leading activities in kindergarten…for their little soccer team. She had an official uniform, and learned a lot of cheers. She still has that uniform…it’s so tiny! Her own daughter can wear it now. She still has all her uniforms, as we had to buy each one (and they are not cheap!)

Later, she cheered every year in middle school, and also in high school. There were many uniforms…all cute, and different ones for each season.

The cheer squad in all of these were very hard working girls. They were very much working at their cheering and stunts, and very dedicated (not just playing around).

She learned lots of cheer chants, too.

Here’s a couple I remember from hearing them at my old school, whose mascot was the Matadors.

“Thunder, thunder…thunderation

We’re the Matador delegation

When we fight with determination

We create a sensation!”

“Two bits, four bits, six bits a dollar

All for the Matadors, stand up and holler”

I used to know them all, from hearing them so many times, but now have forgotten. They were all catchy and fun.

  1. If you were new to this area, I would suggest visiting the Buddy Holly Center. It is on the edge of the down town district. There are lots of Buddy Holly’s personal items, and really good informational things to read about his life and legend. There is also a gift shop, where you can buy souvenirs of all kinds.
  2. My favorite room here is the living room. This where I have my computer, in one corner, so I spend most of my time here. I can also look out the back door and see the cats we feed out there, and also the hanging bird feeder where cute birds come to eat.
  3. Back to school time reminds me of all the new school supplies. I love all kinds of things for school, and office, even today. I can’t resist getting some new spirals, or pens, and markers.
  4. My favorite year of school was in elementary classes, every year at Halloween time. Our school always put on a carnival. Every room had  different things to do, such as games to win prizes, food to eat, and everyone wore their costumes. The room mothers helped out. One year my mom was all dressed up as a gypsy fortune teller, and had a little booth. My cousins, aunt, and I also made things for giving away as prizes, which was fun. We made plaster of Paris figures/plaques, that we’d paint. They always turned out really good.

DEAR DIARY – APRIL 11 – APRIL 20, 1961

These are the things I wrote in my diary, when I was 10 years old. 🙂

Dear Diary,

4/11/61 – I went to school. When I came home I played. then I watched tv. M & O (parents friends) came over. Then I went to bed.

4/12/61 – I did not go to school. I had the cramp. I stayed in bed all day. After dinner we went to the store. When I came home I played. I felt better. I played out side. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

4/13/61 – I went to school. I asked the teacher what they did yesterday. They went walking. They went to C’s house. (classmate) They saw all their dogs and chickens. Then they went over to E’s house. (classmate) C rode his pony. When I came home I played. I watched tv. Then I went to bed.  (for some reason I think I must have gotten the days wrong in here. I definitely remember going on this outing with the class…or maybe we went another time that I went?)

4/14/61 – I went to school. When I came home we went to B’s (my aunt’s sister-in-law?) When we came back, J (cousin) came over. She spent the night. Then we played. A sand storm. (guess we had a sand storm that day. Not unusual in the spring!) We went over to N’s (aunt). When we came home we went to bed.

4/15/61 – I did not go to school. J and I played all day. When she went home we went to Grannys house. We ate supper over there. When we went home we went to bed.

4/16/61 – I did not go to school I played with J (cousin). We went over to N’s (aunt) We went riding. When I came home I played. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

4/17/61 – I went to school. After school I went to play with B (a classmate- I remember we had fun playing paper dolls). When I came home I played Then I watched tv and went to bed.

4/18/61 – I went to school. I rode my bicycle to school. When I came home I played outside. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

4/19/61 – I went to school. At music I learned a new song. When I went home I got my report card. When I got home I played all day. Then I went to bed.

4/20/61 – I went to school. When I got home I played. Then I went to J’s house. When I came home I went to the dime store. When I came home we went to Grand pas. P (sister) tried to ride a little bicycle. When I came home we showed a fim (home movie film). Then I went to bed.

Dear Diary …

3/18/61 – I did not go to school. We went to the stamp center. we did not buy anything. Granny went with us. we went by the dime store. I bought paper, past. (paste) When I got home I played. I got my Easter shoes. Then we watched tv. Then we went to bed.

3/19/61 – I played all day. Daddy went over to Mrs. S’s (neighbor) house. I went with him. We saw their puppies. L and J (the neighbor girls) came over. L and I cooked dinner. When they went home I played. Then I painted. Then we went to bed.

3/20/61 – I went to school. When I came home S (school friend) came over. She spent the nighth (night). We played all day. Then we went to bed.

3/21/61 – I went to school. S (school friend) and I took our lunch together. When I got home I went to the landrey (laundry). When I got home I played. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

3/22/61 – I went to school. When I got home J (cousin) came over. When she went home I made a 3 D picture. Then we played. I watched tv. then I went to bed.

3/23/61 – I went to school. we made clay. When I came home V (cousin) was over. We went to the Dime Store. When I got home I mad (made) some clay. Then I played. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

3/24/61 – I went to school. Some mothers came to visit. When I went home I played. Then I palnted (planted? I have no idea what this was). Then I watched tv. then I went to bed.
