They say the moon is made of cheese, but I don’t believe it any more.
Back when I was a kid, my dad built his own telescope. I loved watching him grind the lenses, taking a large white plumbing pipe, and putting it all together. He checked out books from the library to find out how to do it.
When it was finished, we took it outside on dark nights to gaze up at the stars, the planets, and the moon. The moon’s craters were beautifully shadowed against the bright reflective moon light.
My imagination went wild, thinking of other worlds in the universe. If I could just reach out there … touch them.
Visions filled me with wonder as I fell asleep.

Another little fun memory about the telescope. I was in 4th grade at elementary school when my dad was building his telescope. Maybe I mentioned it to people, but I don’t remember if I did or not. One day I was called down to the principle’s office. I’d never been there before, and thought I might be in trouble for something. Anyway, I went. The principle (Mr. Pierce) just wanted me to tell him all about the telescope and how my dad made it. I guess he was interested in looking at the sky, too. I don’t know if he ever called my dad to ask about it, but I felt pretty special to have been asked to explain about it.

This photo I took last night, looking out our back door. The moon was full and beautiful. The photo didn’t show how pretty it really was, of course. But, I’m glad I got to see it.
I think watching my dad make a telescope from scratch got me interested in sky watching forever more. I have a calling it seems, to look at the sky a lot, be it night or day. I’ve seen the rings of Saturn, and other planets through that telescope. I’ve seen comets, and the space station go by, and lots of falling stars. Daytime brings clouds, sun halos, and rainbows. I’m always looking for mysteries in the sky.
I have my own telescope now, and we’ve looked through it a lot of times. Still, it’s not as wonderful as that first time looking at the moon through my dad’s home built telescope.

This is the final day of NanoPoblano 2023. I’ve enjoyed the challenge again this year, though I missed a few days. I think for me it might be better to have an actual theme next time, though.
Thanks to all who stopped by for a visit, left a like or a comment. I sure appreciate it.
