19 miles to Baghdad,
I don’t feel so all alone…
Sometimes I get to talk to you,
Via the video-phone.
19 miles to Baghdad, and
I’m writing you this postcard,
Just to take away the fear…
Actually, it’s not so hard.
19 Miles to Baghdad, and
One thing I’ll never hear,
Is G.I.s writing home to say,
Wish you were here.
19 Miles to Baghdad, and
This I’m proud to say…
We’re over here protecting you all,
in the whole U. S. A.

As blossoms bouquet
A smell of dirty, red wind
Immense bombs stagger

This poem and Haiku I wrote back in 2003 has been on my mind for awhile. It was twelve years ago, at the end of March, and the beginning of April, when U.S. forces were advancing on Baghdad, Iraq. I heard a news reporter say they were 19 miles away, and the ‘Battle of Baghdad’ would begin in earnest.
**It’s now been 14 years as of April, 2017.
This link takes you to the details of the ‘Battle of Baghdad’. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Baghdad_(2003)
