War and Peace

***

Today we have the prompt of songs about war and peace, suggested by Nancy aka The Sicilian Storyteller.

***

This is one of my favorite Eagles songs. It was written after and concerning 9-11, but still could be about the state of the world at this time, too. There are still wars going on, and now there is violence in the streets, and the pandemic virus – they all take loved ones away, leaving a hole in their family’s world, and in our hearts. ❤

From the Song Facts article:

  • The Eagles wrote this after a tour in Europe. They started the composition around September 11, 2001. The message is that love is the ultimate savior in a world damaged and corrupted by evil and hatred. It also conveys parents’ dreams and hopes for their children in such a troubled society. >>
  • Don Henley explained in the liner notes for The Very Best Of The Eagles compilation that he penned on the darkest day in American history: September 11, 2001. “I sat down at the piano in my home studio and started putting some chords with the phrase ‘hole in the world,’” he said. “Months went by, but I didn’t show it to anybody. Then, other things started happening that gave additional meanings to ‘Hole in the World,’ particularly after the [Iraqi] war started. The fighting was supposedly over in May, and yet one or two or three of our boys were – and still are – getting killed every day, which means somebody’s daddy is not coming home. So that’s another ‘hole’ — a huge hole in somebody’s life – a child, a wife, a mother, a father, a brother, a sister.”

“Hole in the World”, by the Eagles, was written in response to September 11, 2001. It was released in 2003, from the album, “The Very Best Of”,  and was written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey. It is on The Eagles Recording Company II label

There's a hole in the world tonight.
There's a cloud of fear and sorrow.
There's a hole in the world tonight.
Don't let there be a hole in the world tomorrow.

They say that anger is just love disappointed.
They say that love is just a state of mind.
But all this fighting over who is anointed,
Oh, how can people be so blind?

There's a hole in the world tonight.
There's a cloud of fear and sorrow.
There's a hole in the world tonight.
Don't let there be a hole in the world tomorrow.

Oh, they tell me there's a place over yonder
Cool water running through the burning sand.
Until we learn to love one another,
We will never reach the Promised Land.

There's a hole in the world tonight.
There's a cloud of fear and sorrow.
There's a hole in the world tonight.
Don't let there be a hole in the world tomorrow.

(There's a hole in the world tonight.)
They say that anger is just love disappointed.
(There's a cloud of fear and sorrow.)
They say that love is just a state of mind.
(There's a hole in the world tonight.)
But all this fighting over who will be anointed,
(Don't let there be a hole in the world tomorrow.)
Oh, how can people be so blind?

There's a hole in the world tonight.
(Hole in the world)
There's a cloud of fear and sorrow.
(Fear and sorrow)
There's a hole in the world tonight.
(Oh)
Don't let there be a hole in the world tomorrow (repeat three times)

I like both of these artists, and when they got together to do this song, it was one of my favorites. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this was a peaceful world.

“Peaceful World”, by John Mellencamp and India Arie, was released from the album, “Cuttin’ Heads”, in 2001. It was written by John Mellencamp, and is on the Columbia label.

Come on baby take a ride with me
I’m up from Indiana down to Tennessee
Everything is as cool as can be
In a peaceful worldPeople know this world is a wreck
We’re sick and tired of being politically correct
If I see through it now but I didn’t at first
The hypocrites made it worse and worse
Lookin’ down their noses at what people say
These are just words and words are okay
It’s what you do and not what you say
If you’re not part of the future then get out of the wayCome on baby take a ride with me
I’m up from Indiana down to Tennessee
Everything is cool as can be
In a peaceful worldRacism lives in the U.S. today
Better get hip to what Martin Luther King had to say
I don’t want my kids being brought up this way
Hatred to each other is not okay
Well I’m not a preacher just a singer son
But I can see more work to be done
It’s what you do and not what you say
If you’re not part of the future then get out of the wayCome on baby take a ride with me
I’m up from Indiana down to Tennessee
Everything is cool as can be
In a peaceful worldThe money’s good and the work is okay
Looks like everything is rollin our way
“Til you gotta look the devil in the eye
You know that bastard’s one big lie
So be careful with your heart and what you love
Make sure that it was sent from above
It’s what you do and not what you say
If you’re not part of the future then get out of the wayCome on baby take a ride with me
I’m up from Indiana down to Tennessee
Everything is cool as can be
In a peaceful worldLay back the top and ride with me
I’m up from Indiana down to Tennessee
Everything is cool as can be
In a peaceful worldHey yeah
Hey yeah
Hey yeah
Hey yeah

“Take It to the Limit”, by The Eagles

***

Lots of things might bring you to the limit.

You’ve heard the saying – the sky’s the limit

The limit to what, exactly? The very farthest a person can go in a rocket ship – the sky? But the sky is … limitless!

Then there is being very tired of something, and you’ve reached your limit of it. No more is wanted.

Then there are certain rules to things. You can go so far in following them, all the way up to the utmost limits, and then you go a little farther. You’d be pushing the limit!

The song above, by the Eagles, is one of my favorites of theirs. I’ve actually never found my limit of listening to it. One time I put the CD we have on, put it on repeat, and listened to this one song all day long. I still wasn’t tired of it, and never got to that limit.

I’m sure everyone has their own personal reasons in reaching limits.
