MAGIC SPELL

Journey back in time with me

A quiet time, oh, can’t you see?

No internet, no political lies,

No news that constantly horrifies

Travel paths we trod when young

Friends, games, having fun

Make believe all is well

Wave your wand – a magic spell

Flower of the Day – Red Roses

***

Not real clear, but I like these roses because they were growing many years ago at my childhood home. My mom had a green thumb, and had lots of kinds of flowers and plants growing indoors and outside.

Red climbing roses on the backyard fence, and more climbing on the fence in the side yard.

It’s that time again for the April A to Z Blog Challenge. I’ve done this one for quite a few years, and it’s always fun.

This time I decided to go with the miscellaneous type posts, which some days will be whatever I want, and other days will be a resurrection of my older posts that pretty much no one or very few ever saw.

So, here we go with Letter J  …

JACKS

Do you remember playing the kids’s game of Jacks? I remember how much fun we had.

The game of Jacks is played all over the world, by kids of all ages. There are as many types of Jacks games, as there are kids who play.

The ones I used were the little metal pronged toy that you throw onto a hard surface, like the floor. You have a small rubber ball, which you throw up into the air, pick up a set number of the jacks, and then catch the ball after one bounce.

Other’s rules say not to let the ball bounce at all, and some use a wooden ball or token. Some jacks are made of brightly colored plastic.

Friends can play together, taking turns, or you can play and practice on your own. We used to go early to school, just so we could get in a game before classes started. It was the rage for awhile.

There are different ways to pick up the jacks during a game. They all have funny names, for each round. Here’s a few I remember…

  • onsies – tensies
  • eggs in the basket
  • peas in the pod
  • piggies
  • flying pigs
  • round the world
  • kiss’ems
  • shooting stars
  • over the fence

Honestly, we could have played these rounds of jacks all day. Sometimes, we’d use a golf ball instead of the rubber ball. This worked best on the sidewalk. Long ago, inside a regular golf ball, was another smaller, rubber ball. We’d get an old, beat up golf ball and cut it open. It was fun and funny, because also inside the golf ball, were all these long strands of rubber band things. They’d come popping out all over the place, and we’d scream and laugh. Then, we’d grab the smaller ball to play our jacks with.

Sometimes, the adults would warn us that if we weren’t careful…if we accidently poked a hole in the small ball, there was a poison liquid inside; if it got in your eye, you’d go blind. We never did poke any holes, though, and no one went blind.

This is the the craziest sounding thing…now that I think about it. I mean, we were kids, using sharp knives to cut a possibly poison golf ball…and the adults were not concerned about this…just the poison part…and they let us do it anyway!

All I know, is we sure had fun playing the game of Jacks. I’ll bet I could still play a pretty good game…in fact, I do have a set. I think I’ll try a game or two.

How about you? Want to join me?

I AM the KID WHO (part 3)

  • Wrote all over a wall, got in trouble, and had to spend forever erasing it. I missed watching my favorite TV show, “The Wonderful World of Disney”.
  • Had 50 cents to spend, so spent it all on penny candy. I had 50 pieces of candy in a brown paper sack, and it was good!
  • Put a weird car part in a tree, and it stayed there for years. The tree grew completely around it, with only a long wire sticking out.
  • After a permanent tooth grew in, promptly broke it in half. Spent the next many years with a silver cap on it. (the front, bottom one)
  • Would cut or tear any clothes I didn’t like, so I wouldn’t have to wear them again.
  • Was positive I saw a witch fly across the full moon, one Halloween night.

I AM the KID WHO (part 1)   …see part 2 here http://wp.me/p3RE1e-3p1

  • Had to have stitches, two different times, before I even started school. (foot and face)
  • Had lots of bumps and bruises, because I was so clumsy. (still am)
  • Had to start writing stories, diaries, and poems at an early age. (still do)
  • Had to accidentally spill hot cream gravy in her lap. (still spill food on myself & need tons of napkins)
  • Had a big tree to climb up in, so I could read a book. (still read books, but not in a tree)
  • Had to sneak out in the middle of the night to look at the stars, and look for UFOs (still do this)
  • Had to get my tongue and lips stuck to a Fudgesicle ice-cream bar, then yanked it off. (don’t do this anymore)
  • Had to make a costume out of paper bags, for my scout troop. (silly but fun)

Stay tuned for more…:)

Dear Diary,

5/1/61 – I went to school. It rained all day. When I came home I painted. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

5/2/61 – I went to school. After school P (sister) walked home with me for the first time. When we got home we played. Then we went to bed.

5/3/61 – I went to school. When I came home. J(cousin) came home with me. We played. Then we went to Grandmas. P rode the bike. When we went home I played with P. Then I came in. Then I went to bed.

5/4/61 – I went to school.

5/5/61 – I went to school .

5/6/61 – Daddy played golf today. I helped mother clean the house. B (aunt) & kids came over. We went to the show tonight. Saw “North to Alaska” and “Edge of Eternity.” Came home & the house was full of millers.

**note** these past 3 were for some reason written in my mom’s handwriting. Why, I don’t know. Guess I was too busy to write? Who knows. Those 2 movies, well, I’m sure they were what my parents wanted to see. Not kid movies at all. And…the millers…oh my, those were moths, we called them millers, or candle bugs, or space coasters. We had an invasion of them and it was crazy! 🙂

5/7/61 – We went to church. It had a sandstorm. (It? haha the church had a sandstorm? well, I’m sure I was just talking about the weather of the day.) … Daddy plumbed (He was a master plumber) haha I wrote ‘plumbed’ – didn’t know I knew that word back then at 10 years old! … for our washing machine. We went to the grocery store. Then we went to N’s (aunt) and then to B’s (aunt)

5/8/61 – I went to school. I went to see Dr. Jenkins. I have exzema on my head. Went to school this evening. Mother had her ears washed out.

5/9/61 – I went to school. J (cousin) came home with me to play.’

5/10/61 – I went to school.

5/11/61 – I went to school. It is D’s (cousin) birthday. He got 4 dollars and a half, a bilfold (billfold), Thongs (flip-flops), bicycle. We played out side for a long time.
