How Much Activity is Recommended?

Some is good…more is better! Physical activity is anything that gets you moving and using energy. There is no minimum amount of physical activity required to achieve some health benefits – and people starting from low levels of activity (fewer than 30 minutes per week) often have the most to gain from each additional minute.

The UK Chief Medical Officer's Guidelines regarding how much physical activity we should try to aim for is as follows:

For adults

Adults should aim to be physically active daily. Ideally, over a week activity should add up to at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity. This will raise your heart rate and increase your breathing, but still enable you to hold a conversation.

Adults should also aim to do muscle strengthening activities on at least two days a week.

For children and young people

Aged 1 - 5 years: Aim for an average of at least 180 minutes a day, every day.

Aged 5 - 18 years: Aim for an average of at least 60 minutes a day, every day.
