I went Windows free last night, did a complete format of my harddrive (was dual-booting XP and Ubuntu) and put Ubuntu alone on. Now I just need to get Xgl and Beryl working on it again.

Picture quality is more important than screen size. and the LCD's of some budget brands are actually made by the same company who makes them for one of the big brand names, so look into that for any of the budget brands you are considering buying. Their casing and such may end up looking cheaper than one of the more expensive models but there may be very little noticeable difference in image quality (unless you are a complete AV geek).

Yeah. There's a family of them out now: XGL, AIGLX, Beryl, and Compiz. Basically they're the Linux implementation of Sun's Project Looking Glass (Vista features another take on this same project).

It's mostly eye candy, but a lot of the features are really cool. I can't browse YouTube at work, but if you're able to go there do a search on XGL, Beryl or Compiz.

I'm so out of the loop on x11 stuff.

Hehe. X11 is dead. This stuff is based on the new X.Org stuff.

/it's new to me too, it's been a lot fun watching this develop rapidly every week for the past year.

It's all eye candy. But I do like the effect of going to cube mode to change my workspace, and the dynamic zoom mode (cause my vision is going bad).

There's also application tiling in Xlg which is identical to the application tiling found in Max OSX. That's pretty cool.

Other little effects like window transparency and window "wobble" are just waste of processor time. (But they do look cool.)

I must say I love my Edgy-XGL-Beryl setup, and it runs lovely on my 1300 mhz, 64 mb geforceII machine... amazing Linux these days.

What size?

On the low end, Wal-Mart has some decent Sanyos for acceptable prices. Getting towards the $1500 mark, I'd just try to make sure I had a surfeit of input options- the Viewsonic panels are hard to locate, but are good for that. Although the screen itself might be identical between a Vizio and a Sony (just tossing out examples, not sure if they really are), the electronics won't be identical. The quality of a scaler will make the difference between standard def content looking great and looking awful.

I guess it's an eye of the beholder or what-dictionary-are-you-using kind of thing.

The window transparency feature has come in handy for when I can't copy-paste (.pdf page to OOWord document, for example) and I also love the application tiling/Expose thing. I don't consider those eye candy since they're functional to me.

I'm splitting hairs, probably.

I'm far too lazy to dig up the article, but I thought I read that X11 is no longer being developed and that X.Org will be its successor.

I could be wrong too. :/

I got a 32" ViewSonic from Newegg for $700, works great. Just make sure you read and understand that when you sign for it it's yours, any problems have to be dealt with by the manufacturer.

Strange thing is that I have gotten XGL to work, and not AIGLX..don't know if it would make any difference...as is the same with the choice of compiz/beryl, I never got compiz working.

Personally I would just get an RPM of PHP5 and install it as an update, or completely uninstall PHP4 using YaST and do an install of PHP5 either from a package or from source.

Not sure. Did you try deleting 'C:\Program Files\IntCodec\isamini.exe'? It may not delete if it's running....

Nerv2021: Back on to TVs, DLP or LCoS?

The higher end Mitsu DLPs that I've been selling lately have a great picture right out of the box. Crystal clear with dark, dark blacks. Great TV for the money - of course I buy at cost... :) You could probably find something online very close to cost.

I haven't seen an LCoS TV yet.. or if I have I didn't know. Most of my clients end up with plasmas anyway. But the ones with projection run TVs usually end up with DLPs...

Why are you using YaST? Just download the rpm and install it off of the ommandline. As root just do something like:

Do everything in safe mode in an ADMINISTRATOR account that was created BEFORE you farked it up.

TIP: When installing Windows let it make the first default account and CHANGE THE PASSWORD. Then make a new one for yourself.

If you are going to use Linux you really should learn to utilize the power of the command line, it is the best thing about linux frankly. Lots of good resources online and picking up a decent book is always a good idea as well.

I would also recommend updating to a newer release. If you want to stick with Suse there is OpenSuse 10.2 I think is their newest stable release. I started linux on Mandrake/Mandriva and then SuSe, much prefer Ubuntu now though.

Oh yea, as well I should mention that package management systems like YaST, Adept, Apt, Synaptic, etc typically don't have the newest versions of all software (except for distribution specific stuff and of course some of the big applications like Firefox, OpenOffice, etc) available in their sources/repositories.

There are often graphical front ends available to install packages (like .rpm's and .debs, etc) if you aren't comfortable with the command line. Repositories and sources and such are great (I install a lot of things that way on Ubuntu) but it will never have everything available.

And there we have the problem with Linux in a nutshell (shell, hah! sorry...). I realize I'm opening myself up to flame here (which I never really understood: why do people feel such intense loyalty to a piece of software?), but I say this totally with the best interests of the Linux community in mind: if you want Linux to take off with ordinary users, you're going to have to change things so that they have absolutely no need to learn anything technical. "But they had to learn technical stuff when they learned how to use Windows/OSX!" Yeah, they did. Is that fair? No. But the fact is they're now secure in their proprietary systems, and you need to not only give them a compelling reason to move (and I admit the prospect of *not* paying several hundred dollars every few years is compelling) but also ease the transition as much as is humanly possible. Which means, as much as you hate it, that you'll have to give up, at first, some of the stuff that ties Linux to the OSS community, stuff like the command line and making recompiling an integral part of installation and yes, I realize those are outdated generalizations. They still apply in principle. I can't count how many things I've seen in Linux that are different just for the sake of being different. That's not gonna fly. Swallow your pride, take a good look at what the big two are doing right, and put it back into your system. Don't like it? That's why there are different flavors of Linux in the first place. I really, really, hope you do that, because as soon as I can find a flavor that I can recommend to my clueless family without having to worry about them coming to me to explain how it works in Linux every two seconds, I will be all over that like Crack Spider on a pimpin' rod.

Good example of different for the sake of being different: having 'ps' complain about a leading hyphen on its options. W.T.F.? Was there something wrong with getopt() on just that one command on just that one OS? :)

FreeBSD's still command line heavy and still has the same gazillion X11 environments to choose from that Linux does. But at least there's just one distribution and one package management system, and it's one that realized that .tar.gz was still just a dandy archiving format. It still feels like the old Unixes I learned on before Linux even existed, which probably only matters to us assclowns who were wearing diapers during the Ford presidency :)

But hey, personal preference and all that.

Meanwhile, if you want the "easy Unix for the family members", get a refurb Intel Mac Mini for cheap and they run Windows and Linux just fine if ya gotta.
