Summary

  • Allows host-read .html attachments only when they are trusted generated reports under the resolved OpenClaw temp root.
  • Keeps arbitrary host-local HTML blocked, including symlink and hardlink attempts into the temp root.
  • Adds regression coverage for trusted generated HTML, outside-root HTML, non-HTML text, symlink, hardlink, and binary disguised .html cases.

Verification

  • node scripts/run-vitest.mjs src/media/web-media.test.ts --reporter=verbose
  • node scripts/run-vitest.mjs src/media/load-options.test.ts src/media/read-capability.test.ts src/media/outbound-attachment.test.ts
  • node scripts/run-vitest.mjs src/media/web-media.test.ts src/media/load-options.test.ts src/media/read-capability.test.ts src/media/outbound-attachment.test.ts --reporter=verbose
  • env -u OPENCLAW_TESTBOX pnpm check:changed
  • /Users/steipete/Projects/agent-scripts/skills/autoreview/scripts/autoreview --mode local

Real behavior proof

Behavior addressed: Telegram delivery of generated HTML report attachments regressed after PR #86531 because host-read .html files were blocked and fell back to Markdown. This change restores generated HTML report attachment delivery without reopening arbitrary host-local HTML reads.

Real environment tested: Local OpenClaw checkout on branch fix/telegram-generated-html-attachments; remote Testbox check also passed before the autoreview hardening follow-up, and the final rebased diff passed local changed gates.

Exact steps or command run after this patch:

node scripts/run-vitest.mjs src/media/web-media.test.ts --reporter=verbose
node scripts/run-vitest.mjs src/media/load-options.test.ts src/media/read-capability.test.ts src/media/outbound-attachment.test.ts
node scripts/run-vitest.mjs src/media/web-media.test.ts src/media/load-options.test.ts src/media/read-capability.test.ts src/media/outbound-attachment.test.ts --reporter=verbose
env -u OPENCLAW_TESTBOX pnpm check:changed
/Users/steipete/Projects/agent-scripts/skills/autoreview/scripts/autoreview --mode local

Evidence after fix:

Test Files 1 passed (1)
Tests 64 passed (64)
Test Files 3 passed (3)
Tests 17 passed (17)
Test Files 4 passed (4)
Tests 81 passed (81)
Import cycle check: 0 runtime value cycle(s).
autoreview clean: no accepted/actionable findings reported
overall: patch is correct (0.86)

Observed result after fix: valid generated .html reports under the OpenClaw temp root load as text/html documents for host-read delivery; .html files outside that root, symlinked files, hardlinked files, non-HTML text, and binary disguised as HTML are rejected with path-not-allowed.

What was not tested: live Telegram Bot API delivery, because channel credentials were not available in this checkout.

Codex review: found issues before merge. Reviewed May 29, 2026, 6:30 AM ET / 10:30 UTC.

Summary
The PR changes src/media/web-media.ts and tests to allow host-read .html files only when they are generated under the resolved OpenClaw temp root, while rejecting outside-root, symlink, hardlink, non-HTML, and binary cases.

PR surface: Source +79, Tests +103. Total +182 across 2 files.

Reproducibility: yes. Current main source and tests show host-read .html rejects with path-not-allowed, and the Mantis baseline proof shows Telegram generated-report delivery ending in Media failed.

Review metrics: 1 noteworthy metric.

  • Host-read HTML policy: 1 allow path added. The PR changes a fail-closed host-read .html boundary, so maintainers need to review both desired delivery and adversarial path behavior before merge.

Merge readiness
Overall: 🧂 unranked krab
Proof: 🦞 diamond lobster ✨ media proof bonus
Patch quality: 🧂 unranked krab
Result: blocked by patch quality or review findings.

Overall follows the weaker of proof and patch quality, so missing proof can cap an otherwise strong patch.

Rank-up moves:

  • [P2] Bind trusted HTML approval to the exact opened file or safe read path before merge.

Risk before merge

  • [P1] Merging as-is changes host-read .html from fail-closed to a restricted allow path, but the trust flag can become stale if the temp-root pathname is swapped between validation and readFile.
  • [P1] The live Telegram proof covers the desired attachment delivery path, but it does not cover the adversarial path-swap case that matters for this security boundary.

Maintainer options:

  1. Bind Trust To The Opened File (recommended)
Fix the implementation so the same opened file that is read is also proven to be a single-link regular file under the resolved OpenClaw temp root.
  2. Keep HTML Fail-Closed
If maintainers do not want to own this host-read HTML boundary yet, park or close the PR and keep current Markdown fallback behavior.
  3. Explicitly Accept The Residual Race
Maintainers could accept the residual temp-root path-swap risk only with explicit security-boundary signoff in the PR discussion.

Next step before merge

  • [P2] Needs maintainer or contributor handling to address the security-boundary finding before merge; this protected maintainer-labeled PR should not be auto-closed or treated as routine cleanup.

Security
Needs attention: The diff narrows arbitrary HTML reads, but the new trusted-HTML path still has a path-swap security-boundary gap before host reads.

Review findings

  • [P2] Bind trusted HTML approval to the opened file — src/media/web-media.ts:990
Review details

Best possible solution:

Keep the restricted generated-HTML behavior, but bind approval to the exact opened file or use a safe open/read flow that rejects path swaps before allowing text/html.

Do we have a high-confidence way to reproduce the issue?

Yes. Current main source and tests show host-read .html rejects with path-not-allowed, and the Mantis baseline proof shows Telegram generated-report delivery ending in Media failed.

Is this the best way to solve the issue?

No. The restricted temp-root HTML allowance is the right shape, but this implementation should bind trust to the opened file before it is the best security-boundary fix.

Full review comments:

  • [P2] Bind trusted HTML approval to the opened file — src/media/web-media.ts:990
trustedGeneratedHtmlPath is computed before readFileOverride(mediaUrl) runs, then reused after the bytes are read. If the temp-root pathname is swapped between those steps, outside HTML can be read through the stale trust flag, so the trust check needs to prove the opened file itself or use a safe open/read flow.
    Confidence: 0.86

Overall correctness: patch is incorrect
Overall confidence: 0.86

Label justifications:

  • P1: The PR addresses a user-visible Telegram attachment regression while changing a sensitive host-read HTML boundary.
  • merge-risk: 🚨 security-boundary: The diff expands local host-read HTML delivery and the current implementation can reuse a stale path-trust decision after the file is swapped.

Security concerns:

  • [medium] Pre-read path trust can go stale — src/media/web-media.ts:990
The PR approves the pathname before reading and later allows HTML based on that stale flag, so a swap between approval and read can bypass the outside-root/symlink/hardlink protections.
    Confidence: 0.86

What I checked:

  • Current main fails closed for host-read HTML: Current main treats extension-declared .html as a declared text MIME but throws path-not-allowed unless it is CSV/Markdown, which matches the reported regression surface. (src/media/web-media.ts:278, ba2620a9afa9)
  • Current main test documents the blocked behavior: The existing test asserts host-read HTML is rejected without a separate security-boundary approval. (src/media/web-media.test.ts:653, ba2620a9afa9)
  • PR head checks path trust before reading: The PR computes trustedGeneratedHtmlPath from isTrustedGeneratedHostReadHtmlPath(mediaUrl) before calling the configured read function on the same pathname. (src/media/web-media.ts:988, aef79032c04a)
  • PR head reuses the pre-read trust flag: After the bytes are read and sniffed, the allow decision receives the earlier trustedGeneratedHtmlPath flag instead of proving that the opened file is still the approved file. (src/media/web-media.ts:1030, aef79032c04a)
  • PR adds focused regression tests: The PR adds tests for allowed generated HTML, outside-root HTML, symlink, hardlink, and non-HTML .html cases, but those tests do not exercise a path swap between approval and read. (src/media/web-media.test.ts:654, aef79032c04a)
  • Mantis proof covers the visible Telegram behavior: The prepared ffprobe/contact-sheet artifacts and Mantis comment show baseline Telegram delivery ending in Media failed and the candidate delivering an .html attachment.

What the crustacean ranks mean
  • 🦀 challenger crab: rare, exceptional readiness with strong proof, clean implementation, and convincing validation.
  • 🦞 diamond lobster: very strong readiness with only minor maintainer review expected.
  • 🐚 platinum hermit: good normal PR, likely mergeable with ordinary maintainer review.
  • 🦐 gold shrimp: useful signal, but proof or patch confidence is still limited.
  • 🦪 silver shellfish: thin signal; proof, validation, or implementation needs work.
  • 🧂 unranked krab: not merge-ready because proof is missing/unusable or there are serious correctness or safety concerns.
  • 🌊 off-meta tidepool: rating does not apply to this item.

Shiny media proof means a screenshot, video, or linked artifact directly shows the changed behavior. Runtime, network, CSP, and security claims still need visible diagnostics.

P2 Badge Bind trusted HTML checks to the bytes read

When a .html host-read path is approved here, the code later calls the supplied readFile using the same pathname without revalidating that the opened file is still the single-link regular file under the OpenClaw temp root. In the scenario this change is trying to protect (symlink/hardlink/outside-root HTML), anything that can modify the temp path between this check and the read can swap the approved file for a symlink or hardlink to an outside HTML file and still pass isTrustedGeneratedHostReadHtml because the stale trustedGeneratedHtmlPath flag is reused. The trust decision should be tied to the opened file/realpath after read, or the read should be performed through a safe open that rejects swaps.

##### Highlights

- Agent and Codex runtime recovery is steadier: subagents keep cwd/workspace separation, hook context stays prompt-local, session locks release on timeout abort while live OpenClaw locks survive cleanup, stale restart continuations are avoided, and Codex app-server/helper failures no longer tear down shared runtime state. ([#87218](openclaw/openclaw#87218), [#86875](openclaw/openclaw#86875), [#87409](openclaw/openclaw#87409), [#87399](openclaw/openclaw#87399), [#87375](openclaw/openclaw#87375), [#88129](openclaw/openclaw#88129))
- Channel delivery and session identity got safer across outbound plugin hooks, Matrix room ids, iMessage reactions/approvals, Slack final replies, Discord recovered tool warnings, runtime-config message actions, WhatsApp profile auth roots, Telegram polling, and Microsoft Teams service URL trust checks. ([#73706](openclaw/openclaw#73706), [#75670](openclaw/openclaw#75670), [#87366](openclaw/openclaw#87366), [#87451](openclaw/openclaw#87451), [#87334](openclaw/openclaw#87334), [#84535](openclaw/openclaw#84535), [#82492](openclaw/openclaw#82492), [#83304](openclaw/openclaw#83304), [#87160](openclaw/openclaw#87160))
- Mobile and chat surfaces got a broader refresh: the iOS Pro UI, hosted push relay default, realtime Talk tab playback, Gateway chat transport, onboarding, Talk permissions, WebChat reconnect delivery, and session picker behavior now preserve more state across reconnects and empty searches. ([#87367](openclaw/openclaw#87367), [#87531](openclaw/openclaw#87531), [#87682](openclaw/openclaw#87682), [#88096](openclaw/openclaw#88096), [#88105](openclaw/openclaw#88105)) Thanks [@ngutman](https://github.com/ngutman) and [@BunsDev](https://github.com/BunsDev).
- Browser, channel, and automation inputs are stricter: Browser tool timeouts, viewport/tab indices, Gateway ports, cron retry handling, Discord component ids, schema array refs, Telegram callback pages, and channel progress callbacks now reject malformed values earlier and preserve the intended delivery context. ([#82887](openclaw/openclaw#82887))
- Provider, media, and document coverage expands with Claude Opus 4.8, Fal Krea image schemas, NVIDIA featured models, MiniMax streaming music responses, encrypted PDF extraction, voice model catalogs, GitHub Copilot agent runtime support, and a Codex Supervisor plugin path for delegated Codex workflows. ([#87845](openclaw/openclaw#87845), [#87890](openclaw/openclaw#87890), [#80775](openclaw/openclaw#80775), [#84764](openclaw/openclaw#84764), [#87751](openclaw/openclaw#87751), [#87794](openclaw/openclaw#87794))
- CLI, auth, doctor, and provider paths fail faster and recover more clearly: malformed numeric/version options are rejected, workspace dotenv provider credentials are ignored, heartbeat defaults, OAuth/token lifetimes, and local service startup requests are bounded, agent auth health labels are clearer, legacy `api_key` auth profiles migrate to canonical form, and restart guidance is actionable. ([#87398](openclaw/openclaw#87398), [#86281](openclaw/openclaw#86281), [#87361](openclaw/openclaw#87361), [#88133](openclaw/openclaw#88133), [#83655](openclaw/openclaw#83655), [#87559](openclaw/openclaw#87559), [#88088](openclaw/openclaw#88088), [#85924](openclaw/openclaw#85924)) Thanks [@vincentkoc](https://github.com/vincentkoc) and [@giodl73-repo](https://github.com/giodl73-repo).
- Plugin and Gateway hot paths do less repeated work while preserving cache correctness for install records, config JSON parsing, tool search catalogs, session stores, manifest model rows, auto-enabled plugin config, browser tokens, viewer assets, and release-split external plugin packages. ([#86699](openclaw/openclaw#86699))
- Release, QA, and E2E validation now bound more log, artifact, harness, and cross-OS waits so failing lanes produce proof instead of hanging or false-greening.

- Media/images: skip CLI image cache refs when resolving generated images, allow trusted generated HTML attachments, and bound generated video downloads so stale refs and slow providers fail cleanly. ([#87523](openclaw/openclaw#87523), [#87982](openclaw/openclaw#87982))
- File transfer: handle late tar stdin pipe errors after archive validation or unpacking has already settled.

- Release/CI: bound manual git fetches, ClawHub verifier responses, ClawHub owner metadata, dependency-guard error bodies, Parallels limits, startup/test/memory budget parsing, and diffs viewer build warnings so release lanes fail with useful proof instead of hanging. ([#87839](openclaw/openclaw#87839))
