Pumpkin on a Vine

Hi everyone,

I’m happy that my picture book set for September 8 now has a cover that you can see on Amazon.

The book can be preordered now and is off to a nice start. It is for young readers/listeners and can be acted out as it’s read aloud. I love the pictures created by ALICE FEAGAN, a first-time collaborator. More information as we get closer to release date. My thanks as always to my editor at Holiday House, GRACE MACCARONE.

A new book coming in September

Hi everyone,

A few months ago I told you I’d received sketches for my next picture book, Pumpkin on a Vine. I originally wrote the story to be a class exercise as a favor for a longtime professor friend of mine at Brigham Young University, TERRELL YOUNG, who was working with kindergarten teacher AMY SHAKESPEARE WHITE in Salt Lake City. The kids had a good time following the actions in the story and Amy sent me some very cute pictures of them in action.

Years later I partnered with JANE YOLEN to write a collection of poems about seeds and included the pumpkin poem. GRACE MACCARONE at Holiday House liked the pumpkin poem but couldn’t use the collection. I wrote a watermelon poem to replace the pumpkin, sold Grace that one for a book, and Jane and I placed the seed manuscript with a different publisher. It should be out next year.

Meanwhile, the pumpkin poem, now titled Pumpkin on the Vine, has just been listed on Amazon with a September 8 release date. I’m delighted.

A new honor for A Tree is a Community

Hi everyone,

A Tree is a Community has been chosen by the Bank Street College of Education committee for it’s list of Best Books for 2024. It was one of two in an under 5 category called STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics).

The book is beautifully illustrated by KATE COSGROVE, edited by GRACE MACCARONE, and published by Holiday House.

Kate’s artwork for the book was chosen for display in New York City in the Society for The Original Art exhibition. Then it was selected to be featured in Italy at the famous Bologna Book and Art Fair. The book received a starred review by Kirkus, is being translated into Portuguese, and was on a BETSY BIRD list to consider for a Newbery Medal.

Kate Cosgrove’s great honor for A Tree is a Community

Hi everyone,

KATE COSGROVE, artist for A Tree is a Community, received some pretty incredible news yesterday. Her artwork for the book has been on display in New York in The Original Art 2024 exhibition at the Society of Illustrators. That is a singular honor to recognize the best picture book illustrations of the year. Yesterday she heard from the museum’s director, telling her that her work has been chosen to be featured in the 2025 Bologna Book Fair art exhibit, taking place in Bologna, Italy April 1–4, 2025!

This is an incredible opportunity for artists to showcase their work on an international stage, where about 1,500 exhibitors and nearly 32,000 editors, art directors, agents, authors, and artists from 100 countries will be in attendance.

Congratulations to my friend and partner, Kate Cosgrove!!! An earlier collaboration of ours, The Dirt Book, Poems About Animals That Live Beneath Our Feet, has done quite well. Both books were edited by GRACE MACCARONE and published by Holiday House.

Kate’s art for The Dirt Book was also chosen for display in The Original Art 2024 exhibition at the Society of Illustrators, but A Tree is a Community is off to a great start of its own. Kirkus gave it a starred review. It has it first translation (Brazil), and made one of BETSY BIRD’S lists for potential nominees for the 2025 Newbery Award. What do you want to do next, Kate?
