Our sustainability projects

From providing water
to reforestation

For every laptop we sell we provide a family with clean water for a week.

For people in developing countries, clean water can change everything - health, time, education and female empowerment.

We have made a change

We are supporting charity: water

Why have we decided to do this?

703 million people in the world live without clean water.

That’s nearly 1 in 10 people worldwide.

The majority live in isolated rural areas and spend hours every day walking to collect water for their family.

Not only does walking for water keep children out of school or take up time that parents could be using to earn money, but the water often carries diseases that can make everyone sick.

But access to clean water means education, income and health - especially for women and children.

Clean water changes everything.

Health

Diseases from dirty water kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.

Children under-five are on average more than 20 times more likely to die from illnesses linked to unsafe water and bad sanitation than from conflict.

Time

Every day, women and girls around the world spend an estimated 200 million hours collecting water.

Access to clean water gives communities more time to grow food, earn an income, and go to school -- all of which fight poverty.

1

Education

Clean water helps keep kids in school, especially girls.

Less time collecting water means more time in class. Clean water and proper toilets at school means teenage girls don’t have to stay home for a week out of every month.

3

Women empowerment

Women and girls are responsible for water collection in 8 out of 10 households with water off premises.

When a community gets water, women and girls get their lives back. They start businesses, improve their homes, and take charge of their own futures.

Why is this relevant to the IT industry?

The IT industry has a colossal footprint when it comes to water. Approximately 190,000 litres of water is used in the extraction, refining & production of just one new computer and its components. In addition, most of our generated e-waste is discarded in landfill sites in Africa and Asia. The IT industry must do better. We promote intelligent re-use and make a huge impact in water avoidance, but this just helps to make a real, tangible difference to human life.

How much of our donations go towards providing the actual water?

100% of it does. It’s part of the reason we chose charity: water

There is a small group of generous philanthropists who fund their operating expenses—things like staff salaries, office rent, and trips to the field. To aid growth in the UK market, they now invest Gift Aid payments from HMRC into their operations budget too. This enables 100% of our donations to go towards providing water.

How much do these water projects cost?

The majority of water projects are in the £8,500 - £25,000 cost range

The water project costs are not usually a neatly rounded number, however, they promise that 100% of our money will always go toward a water project. For example, if we donate £8,500 for a drilled well, but it ends up costing £7,700, the extra £800 will go toward another charity: water project. If the project cost ends up at £9,300, funds from other charity: water donors will cover the remainder.

How long do water projects last?

Once a project is built, it belongs to the local community. Thanks to training throughout the implementation process, the community should be able to afford and manage most routine repairs. charity: water stays engaged so that if they do run into problems that are beyond their ability to address, some outside help can be arranged.

Where are the water projects?

The water projects are wherever the need is most, but charity: water projects have been mostly in Africa and Asia, with some in Central and South America. Our first project is in Sierra Leone.

We previously supported tree planting, where for every laptop purchased, five trees were planted. This effort was pivotal in compensating for the carbon emissions associated with the laptops, including three years of use by our customers

329,208 trees planted

By purchasing one of our laptops, you helped us plant 329,208 trees.

In collaboration with our reforestation partners in Africa, India, and the USA, we aimed to help reduce the effects of global warming through our carbon reduction project investments. One hectare provided enough space for 800-1200 trees. It took just 240 Circular Computing laptops to fill an area the size of a football pitch with trees.

Sustainability projects

The forests that you helped restore alleviated poverty through income diversity for the poorest communities and restored soils, water, and biodiversity.

Mara, Tanzania

The aims of the project are to: restore the native forest, increase food security, create access to clean water and promote access to medicinal and other forest products and secure a regular income for the local villages.

Khasi Hills, India

The Khasi Hills project aims to restore native forest composition and protect diversity. It will also help support indigenous women and youth in the community and increase the income of the local communities.

Luanshya, Zambia

This project works with hundreds of small-scale farmers, providing them with training and tools in return for setting aside part of their lands to regenerate the Miombo woodland. As a result, they receive higher incomes, diversify their economic activities and learn new skills.

California, USA

Restore areas affected by wildfires throughout the whole of California, thus producing ecological benefits such as habitat restoration and erosion control. With these funds, hard-working foresters will dedicate time to promote improved vegetation planning and resource management.

A certified carbon neutral company

We take our commitment to the planet seriously, that's why we are a Carbon Neutral Plus certified company and want to encourage other responsible business owners to do so too.

Our carbon footprint has been assessed following ISO 14064-1 and the GHG Protocol. Any residual Green House Gas emissions have been offset using verified projects to achieve carbon neutrality.

Clean energy and carbon reduction projects

Through our support of clean energy projects, we have offset the CO₂ emissions from the remanufacturing process so that every Circular Computing laptop is a certified Carbon Neutral Plus product.

These projects not only reduce the amount of carbon emissions released into the atmosphere but helps some of the most vulnerable communities become more self sufficient, generate local income and help protect the Earth too.

2017 - 2018:
Renewable energy

For our first year of carbon offsetting projects, we invested in renewable energy initiatives such as Wayang Windu Geothermal Power Project in Indonesia, Kocaeli Landfill Gas to Electricity in Turkey, and wind-based power generation by Panama Wind in Panama, alongside an energy-efficient cookstove project in Kenya.

Together, these initiatives generate or save energy through sustainable means, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while delivering environmental benefits without adverse impacts

Renewable energy

2018 - 2019:
Clean drinking water

In 2018 we invested in 2 projects aimed at providing clean drinking water.

The project in Uganda is identifying broken down boreholes, renovating them and supplying a maintenance programme to ensure that clean, safe water is delivered as a result.

In Cambodia, producing locally made ceramic water purifiers means families no longer need to boil their water to make it safe; reducing indoor air pollution from wood burning- resulting in fewer respiratory illnesses.

2019 - 2020:
Reducing degradation
and deforestation

2019 saw our carbon offset investment go into UN-REDD (UN Reducing Degradation and Deforestation).

The programme supports countries that are leading the path to achieve reductions in emissions from deforestation.

It is a project which is close to our hearts and our ethical framework. It also achieves amazing results for the delicate ecosystem, and it is with great pride that we introduce such a project to our customers who are taking this journey with us.

2020 - 2021:
Reducing deforestation in Brazil

2020 - 2021 followed a similar theme to 2019, with our focus again being on reducing deforestation.

The Portel-Pará REDD project in Brazil is working to prevent unplanned deforestation in native forests, which has occurred due to logging, squatting and attempts to implement pastures. The project is expected to avoid over 22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas emissions over a 40-year period.

Hydro Electric Power Plant

The Arca Hydro Electric Power Plant, on Turkey's Solakl River, exemplifies our dedication to sustainable energy.

This project, with a 16.35 MWe capacity, plays a vital role in reducing fossil fuel dependency, achieving an annual CO2e reduction of 31,405 tonnes. Key environmental measures include dust control, effective water and wastewater management, and biodiversity conservation through reforestation and fish passages. Waste management practices ensure compliance with regulations for responsible disposal.

This initiative reflects our commitment to a sustainable energy future, contributing positively to the environment while meeting energy needs.

2022 - 2023:
Renewable Wind Power Project

The project involves the installation and operation of a Wind Farm.

The total installed capacity of the project is 105 MW and is located at Andhra Pradesh state in India. By generating 105 MW of renewable energy, the project displaces electricity that would otherwise come from fossil fuel sources.

This transition results in saving approximately 198,183 tonnes of CO2e each year, significantly contributing to a cleaner Indian electricity grid. Through this initiative, the project supports sustainable energy practices, ensuring a positive environmental impact over its crediting period.
