Welcome to the Third Oscar History Challenge, a challenge I designed in order to bring some love to one of my favorite things to hate in cinema, the Academy Awards. I've enjoyed doing this the last two years, despite all the well deserved criticism surrounding the Academy. It's still a long standing icon in cinema and I love exploring it and diving into the history of it. So time for Round Three!
As for the rules:
1. Please tag the lists and reviews with either "oscars history challenge 2024" or "ohc24".

2. The films must have been nominated for Oscars. Being shortlisted doesn't count. They can be nominated in any category, including if they won any Honorary Awards, unless the criteria specifically names a category.
3. If the criteria says "features an Oscar nominated person", it means they had to have been nominated for that film.
4. The films can be watched in any order.
5. The films do not have to be first time watches but the more first time watches, the better!

This challenge took from January 5, 2024 to September 16, 2024. The average score I gave for this challenge was a 4.0.
The biggest surprise was Babylon. The last time a film entered my top 10 with a first watch was After Life in 2022. This film surpassed even that and joined my top 3. And it was only the second film of the challenge. Could not have predicted that. Would have saved it for last had I realized how phenomenal it would be. The biggest disappointment was House of Gucci. I can't say I was actually expecting it to be good to be honest, but it does continue to disappoint me how far Ridley Scott has fallen in the last decade or so.
Top Three:
1. Babylon
2. Excalibur
3. Brief Encounter
Bottom Three:
1. Ali Baba Goes to Town
2. Legends of the Fall
3. Village by the River
Other Superlatives:
Best Performances: James Cagney in White Heat/Margot Robbie in Babylon
Worst Performances: Adam Driver in House of Gucci/Karina Lombard in Legends of the Fall
Most Beautiful: Excalibur
Most Thought-Provoking: Adaptation
Made Me Cry: Babylon
Most Fun: Harlem Nights
