Defined by the American Film Institute as a genre "centered on organized crime or maverick criminals in a twentieth century setting", gangster films have long stood as a distinct form of crime drama that tended to follow not police but the men and women involved in organized crime. This includes for example early 1930's era Prohibition dramas, the mafia films of the 70's, and hood films of the 90's. These are the gangster films that have managed to garner Oscar nominations.
