(15.8 Direct Contact Hours + 15.6 Home Study Hours/ 31.3 CE hours) This 2-day course will provide the clinician (PT, PTA, AT, OT, or COTA) with the skills needed to recognize, evaluate, and treat common clinical conditions of the upper cervical spine and related upper cervical dysfunction including: · Cervicogenic Headaches and Dizziness · Concussions · Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (or BPPV), and · Temporo-mandibular joint disorders (TMD) The assessment and treatment approach will utilize thorough clinical assessment and clinical decision making, including IFOMPT’s Cervical Arterial Dysfunction screening framework. Current literature will be presented and discussed. Live component of course is 90% Hands-On Laboratory. Course includes required Home Study component of approximately 15.6 hours.
Course requires a prerequisite of MT-2: Essential Spinal Seminar. Open to PTs, PTAs, ATs, OTs, or COTAs. Enrollment limited. Lab clothes required for all sessions.
Upon completion of the course, the course participant will be able to
- Understand the underlying anatomy, physiology, and common clinical presentation of specific cervical dysfunction conditions including cervicogenic headaches and dizziness, concussions, BPPV and TMD. Must describe the clinical presentation of at least one condition during the course.
- Discuss the relevant research pertaining to the management of each condition listed above.
- Perform an accurate clinical assessment for each upper cervical dysfunction condition listed in objective #1. Must demonstrate at least one example PTAs, ATs, OTs, COTAs are limited to performing assessments through R1* but not into R2*.
- Perform localized graded treatment for each upper cervical dysfunction condition listed above. Requires demonstration of at least one example during laboratory. PTAs, ATs, OTs, COTAs may observe but are prohibited from performing Grades III, IV and V.
- Evaluate the effect of treatment upon various upper cervical dysfunction conditions. Requires demonstration of at least one example during course. PTAs, ATs, OTs, COTAs are prohibited from performing Grades III, IV and V.
- Prescribe relevant home exercise programs for select upper cervical conditions. Requires demonstration of at least one example during course.
Please refer to MT-UC COURSE COMPETENCIES for proficiency participants should be aiming to accomplish after diligent practice of skills learned in MT-UC. Proficiency in the Course Competencies are required for the Orthopedic Manual Therapy Fellowship. *R1= Initial onset of resistance to movement; R2= Maximum resistance to movement Note: In CA the student/faculty ratio will be no higher than 16:1
Attention ATs, COTAs, OTs, and PTAs attending MAPS courses. These clinicians attending any MAPS course specifically agree to identify themselves to the Course Instructor and limit their laboratory practice to the assessment of physiological movement up to but not beyond the first onset of resistance (R1). Thus, as stated in the Course Objectives, ATs, COTAs, OTs, and PTAs are required to limit their lab practice to only Grades I and II assessment, which are small and large amplitude movements respectively, which occur in the resistance free range prior to R1. Furthermore, ATs, COTAs, OTs, and PTAs attending any MAPS course specifically agree to limit their laboratory practice to physiological (osteokinematic) movements and refrain from performing accessory (arthrokinematic) movements. The practice of mobilization/manipulation is legally regulated by state Practice acts, and MAPS does not advocate that any practitioners (PT, ATs, COTAs, OTs, and PTAs or others) practice any procedure outside their legal scope of practice. MAPS course content is not intended for use by ANY participant outside the scope of their license or relevant regulations. ATs, COTAs, OTs, and PTAs attending this course agree to limit their clinical practice, during and after any MAPS course, to their specific State practice act(s), and to comply with the directions of their supervising Physical Therapist in accordance with APTA HOD RC 31-01.
The following texts are not required for the course, but may prove beneficial reading either before or after the seminar. The cost of any of the below textbooks are not included in the MAPS course fee.
