- Psalm 46:10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Be still. What a hard command. We live in a world of busyness, of constant go go go. Stopping and being still goes against our nature. We think we need to keep pushing, to continuously work to maintain control. The world tells us to hang in there, to persevere. But God tells us to be still.
How do you stop and just be still? It takes effort. In some cases it feels like it takes MORE effort to be still than it does to try to resolve our issues on our own. But we need to learn to stop and just rest in His presence. We need to quit fighting, to stop struggling, and just surrender.
The word “still” is translated from the Hebrew word rapa. It means to cease, to slacken, to stop fighting. We need to cease our struggles because He is in control. He knows our needs and He wants to provide for us. But we have to force ourselves to stop and approach His throne of grace knowing He is in control.
We can do this because He is powerful, He is mighty, He will be exalted. He is raised up above all else and we give Him praise as the One who holds everything in His hands. He alone should be honored above everything else. And when we cease our struggling and surrender to His will, He is glorified and raised up.
I encourage you to stop and pray. Cease your struggling. Release the need to be in control and trust that His way is better. Lay your burdens at His feet and trust that He will provide for all of your needs. Trust Him.

- Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
There are many sermons, devotions, and explanations about the fruit of the Spirit, and you have probably read about them or heard a message on them before. But in our month of JOY, we get to review the fruits once more.
When a person becomes a Christian, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in that person. It is the power of the Spirit within us that transform our lives and make us new creations, in His image (Colossians 3:11). As believers, we have to do our part, too - we need to be walking in His footsteps, living a godly and righteous life. We follow the leading of the Spirit, which requires us to have a close relationship with God.
The result? Besides being made in the likeness of Christ, we see the fruits of the Spirit manifest. Joy is one of the nine fruits that a Christian enjoys and experiences. The Greek word for Joy is chara, meaning joy, gladness, or a source of joy. Interesting that the Greek word for joy includes joy. It appears 59 different times in the Bible and is used to describe individuals who are glad, who are rejoicing, or have received inner gladness or delight. What is even more interesting is that the Greek word is derived from the Greek word charis, which means grace. Why do I point that out? Because it shows us that joy is a gift from God, something that He blesses us with, not something we achieve on our own. Yes, we can do things that give us joy, but true joy in the Biblical sense comes from God.
